In earthwork projects, the designer considers cut and fill balance for minimizing earthwork which may significantly decrease construction costs. Despite carrying out considerable earthwork design, the decrease in volume of earth occurs in construction sites because of embankment settlement under self-weight, consolidation settlement of soft ground, cavity filling and soil loss due to rainfall-runoff. To reflect the decrease in volume of earth, the specifications for road construction just give shrinkage factors in embankment for soils without consideration of embankment settlement under self-weight. In this study, the computational method is used to estimate the amount of embankment settlement under self-weight developed by Iseda (1972) and Ishii (1976). This research shows that the total compression settlements are between 3 to 10 percent of embankment height according to the property of embankment material and embankment height. As a result, the designer should consider the compression settlement on embankment material under selt-weight.
The hydrologic cycle and BOD pollutant loads of all sub-watersheds were analyzed using HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran). At first, sensitivity analyses to water quantity (peak discharge and total volume) and quality (BOD peak concentrations and total loads) were conducted and some critical Parameters were selected. For more precise simulation, the study watershed was divided into four parts according to the landuse characteristics and used climate data and so calibrated and verified respectively. It was found that as the urban area ratio increases in the downstream direction, baseflow decreases (11.1 % $\rightarrow$ 5.0%) and the ratio of direct runoff volume(42.5 % $\rightarrow$ 56.9 %), BOD concentration (3.3 mg/L $\rightarrow$ 15.0 mg/L) and unit loads (55.4 kg/ha/year $\rightarrow$ 354.5 kg/ha/year) increase.
A flood event can be defined by three characteristics; peak discharge, total flood volume, and flood duration, which are correlated each other. However, a conventional flood frequency analysis for the hydrological plan, design, and operation has focused on evaluating only the amount of peak discharge. The interpretation of this univariate flood frequency analysis has a limitation in describing the complex probability behavior of flood events. This study proposed a bivariate flood frequency analysis using a Gumbel mixed model for the flood evaluation. A time series of annual flood events was extracted from observations of inflow to the Soyang River Dam and the Daechung Dam, respectively. The joint probability distribution and return period were derived from the relationship between the amount of peak discharge and the total volume of flood runoff. The applicability of the Gumbel mixed model was tested by comparing the return periods acquired from the proposed bivariate analysis and the conventional univariate analysis.
Currently, the increased run-off and the shortened arrival time are one of the causes of the city environmental disasters in urbanization. Therefore, it is necessary to properly design the hydrologic structures, but it is very difficult to forecast the values necessary to design from the planning stage. Moreover, as the parameter is changed due to the urban development, it is difficult not only to analyze the run-off influences but also to find the related studies and literatures. The purpose of this study is to utilize the results as the important basic data of the hydrologic structures, its proper design and run-off influences through the sensibility analysis of the model parameter variables. In this study, the absolute and relative sensibility analysis method were used to find out the correlation through the sensibility analysis of the topology and hydrology parameters. Especially, in this study, the changes in the run-off amount and volume were calculated according to increase/decrease in CN, the coefficient of discharge, and the empirical formula is prepared and proposed through the regressive analysis among the parameters. In the meantime, the parameter sensibility analysis was performed through the simulation HEC-HMS that is used and available in Korea. From the results of this study, it was found that the run-off amount is increased about by 10% when the CN value is increased by 5% before and after the development through the HEC-HMS simulation and data analysis. As long as there will be additional data collection analysis and result verification, and continuous further studies to find out the parameters proper to the domestic circumstances, it is expected to considerably contribute to the proper design of the hydrologic structures with respect to the ungauged basin.
The burden of flood control on the dam under frequently flood due to climate change and especially heavy flood in 2020 year are come to the forward and increased. The objective of the study is therefore to establish the method to estimate capacity and target water level for flood control in actual dam management. Frequency matching method was applied to establish a pair of cumulative distribution function (CDF) based on daily dam inflow and discharge records. The relationship between dam storage and discharge volume represented as a percentage of inflow volume was derived and its characteristics was analyzed. As the result, the Soyanggang (45%) and Chungju Dam (39%) contributing to flood control with temporarily storing flood runoff. The method and diagram to estimate flood control capacity and target water level for flood control in the dam were established. The result of the study could be used as a supplementary data for flood control of the dam according to the rainfall prediction on the Korea Meteorological Administration.
Problems of under-sized dams (small dams with large basin area) could get worse under the global warming condition. This study evaluates the possible change of these problems with the Namgang Dam, an under-sized dam in Korea. For this purpose, first, this study simulates the dam inflow data using a rainfall-runoff model, which are then used as input for the reservoir operation. As a result, daily dam storage, dam release, and dam water supply are derived and compared for both past observed period (1973~2022) and future simulated period (2006~2099) based on the global warming scenarios. Summarizing the results are as follows. First, the inflow rate in the future is expected to be increased significantly. The maximum inflow could be twice of that observed in the past. As a result, it is also expected that the frequency of the water level reaching the high level is increasing. Also, the amount and frequency of dam release are to be increased in the future period. More seriously, this increase is expected to be concentrated on rather extreme cases with large dam release volume. Simply, the condition for flood protection in the downstream of the Namgang Dam is becoming worse and worse. Ironically, the severity of water shortage problem is also expected to become much worse. As the most extreme case, the frequency of no water supply was zero in the observed period, but in the future period, it becomes once every five years. Both the maximum consecutive shortage days and the total shortage volume are expected to become more than twice in the future period. To prevent or mitigate this coming problem of an under-sized dam, the only countermeasure at this moment seems to be its redevelopment. Simply a bigger dam with larger dam reservoir can handle this adverse effect more easily.

The disposal of stormwater is one of the major problems in urban water management. One method of reducing peak runoff rates and other detrimental impacts of stormwater is detention storage. Detention ponds as a water quality control alternatives have been investigated by a number of researchers. Recognizing multiple roles such as flood peak attenuation, pollution removal and aesthetic enhancement, the design and management of detentions ponds deserve more research. The purpose of this research is to establish design criteria wet detention ponds to improve water quality. Water quality in detention pond discharge might be improve with physical, chemical and biological alterations. Physical alteration was focused in this study. There are several methods for estimating the suspended solid control capability of wet detention ponds. Existing models of suspended solids removal are based on sedimentation and gravity settling theory. The pollutant trap efficiency of pond is a function of several interrelating factors. Detention time is the most important factor, because it determine gravity settling quantities of pollutants. Desirable modification of physical factors for improvement of water quality in wet detention ponds are volume ratio, area ratio, length to width ratio, depth, out let location, bottom soil type. In order to apply design procedure in actual site, Namak new town development area was selected.

It is well known that the water infiltration rate depends on soil properties such as soil water content, water head, capillary suction, density, hydraulic conductivity, and porosity. However, most of proposed infiltration models assume that the air phase is continuous and in equilibrium with the atmosphere or air compression and air entrapment on infiltration was not considered. This study presents experimental results on unsaturated water infiltration to relate air entrapment and hydraulic conductivity function based on soil air properties. The objectives of this study were to measure change of soil air pressure ahead of wetting front under air drain and air confined condition to find the confined air effect on infiltration rate, to reduce the entrapped air volume related with soil air pressure to increase the soil permeability, and to make a basis of infiltration process model for the purpose of improvement of infiltration rate in the homogeneous soil column. The results of the work show that soil air pressure increases according to increasement of the saturated soil depth rather than the wetting front depth during infiltration process.
Universal Soil Loss Equation(USLE) was developed for the estimation of the annual average soil loss from farm land. But, USLE has been applied in estimation of the sediment yield due to the construction activities in Korea without any calibration for last couple of years. Therefore, applicability and the limitation of the MUSLE(modified USLE), which was developed for the estimation of the sediment yield due to single rainfall event, is examined by application of MUSLE into several construction sites and comparing the estimated sediment yields with the actual ones. It is found that MUSLE could be applied in Korea as long as the concentration time, runoff volume and the peak flow rate are estimated with appropriate methods. Comparisons between the applicability of RUSLE and MUSLE are also carried out.
This Study is to develop the suitable hydrologic models for determination of the size and location of detention storage facilities to restrain stormwater runoff in urban areas. Hypothetical areas of two levels are considered to seize the hydrologic response characteristics. A one-square-kilometer ares is selected for the catchment level, and a 10-square-kilometer area consisting of 10 catchments is adapted at the watershed level as representative of urban drainage area. In this analysis, different rainfall freqyencies, land uses, drainage patte군, basin shates and detention storage policies are considered. Folw reduction effect of detention storage facilities is deduced from storage ratio and detention basin factor. A substantial saving in detention storage volumes is achieved 노두 the detention storage is planned at the watershed level rather than the catchment level. For the application of real watersheds, two watersheds in Seoul metropolitan area-Jamshil 2 and Seongnae 1-are selected on the basis of hydrologic response charactaristics. Through the regression analysis between dimensionless deterntion storage volume, dimensionless upstream area ratio and reduction rate of storage ratio, the regression equations to determine the size and location of detention storage faclities are presented.
