Vibration spectrums of the test loop according to flow conditions were analyzed in order to identify the sources of vibration at peak frequencies. While a flow condition of the sweep test was changed by varying pump rotational speed from 450 rpm to 1500 rpm by the step 150 rpm, midspan acceleration of the test section in width-direction and dynamic pressure perturbation in the test section were measured. Other sources of vibration due to the flow structure interactions, such as acoustic resonance, blade pulsing frequency and bellows wrinkles, were investigated. Pressure perturbation in the section and acoustic resonance due to branch pipe give major effects to the vibration of the test section in high frequency range of 1.5 kHz to 2.8 kHz.
Flow fields of a transonic centrifugal compressor are calculated using the commercial CFD code, CFX-TASCflow. Due to the transonic inlet condition, interactions between the shock wave and boundary layers and between the shock wave and tip leakage vortices generate complex flow structures and extra losses. The calculated results show that strong secondary flows due to high curvature and high rotational speed of the impeller. And streamlines near suction surface show that strong radially upward flow develops after the shock between the leading edge locations of main blade and splitter.

Flow visualization techniques were employed to qualitatively visualize the flow patterns through a 400% scaled up centrifugal blood pump. The apparatus comprised of a scaled up centrifugal pump. high speed video camera. Argon Ion Laser Light Sheet and custom coded particle tracking software. Reynolds similarity laws are applied in order to reduce the rotational speed of the pump. The outlet (cutwater) region was identified as a site of high turbulence and thus a likely source of haemolysis. The region underneath the impeller was identified as a region of lower flow.
Flows in the cavity with pump out vane are calculated using the CFX-Tascflow CFD code. flow calculations are performed for different values of vane height, numbers, leakage flow rate, and rotational speed. The flow is very complex and three dimensional with strong vortex and leakage flow over the vane. The variations of pressure coefficient and K-factor with these parameters and resulting effects on the thrust and torque are studied. The present study contributes to showing the capability of flow simulation of back cavity with pump-out vane. The calculated results are good enough to be used back cavity design.
Depending on the range of shear rates, temperatures and concentrations, the potato starch suspension in water behaves as a typical dilatant system. The flow curves of the suspension at various concentrations and temperatures were obtained by using a Couette type rotational viscometer. The flow mechanism of the suspension is explained by a structure model of starch granules in the suspension. Based on the experimental results, a general flow equation for the dilatant system is proposed. By analyzing the temperature dependency of the relaxation time, the activation enthalpy and activation entropy for flow in the starch-water suspension were calculated, the former being about 10 kcal/mol.

A numerical code is developed based on potential flow theory to investigate nonlinear sloshing in rectangular Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanks under forced excitation. Using this code, internal free-surface elevation and sloshing loads on liquid tanks can be obtained both in time domain and frequency domain. In the mathematical model, acceleration potential is solved in the calculation of pressure on tanks and the artificial damping model is adopted to account for energy dissipation during sloshing. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is used to solve boundary value problems of both velocity potential and acceleration potential. Numerical calculation results are compared with published results to determine the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical code. Sloshing properties in partially filled rectangular and membrane tank under translational and rotational excitations are investigated. It is found that sloshing under horizontal and rotational excitations share similar properties. The first resonant mode and excitation frequency are the dominant response frequencies. Resonant sloshing will be excited when vertical excitation lies in the instability region. For liquid tank under rotational excitation, sloshing responses including amplitude and phase are sensitive to the location of the center of rotation. Moreover, experimental tests were conducted to analyze viscous effects on sloshing and to validate the feasibility of artificial damping models. The results show that the artificial damping model with modifying wall boundary conditions has better applicability in simulating sloshing under different fill levels and excitations.
The performance of a scroll expander is the most important factor for the efficiency of small scale Organic Rankine cycle waste heat power generation systems. In this research, a scroll compressor was purchased and operated in reverse to function as a scroll expander. With air as a working fluid, a series of performance test were conducted on this expander by varying the inlet and outlet pressure. Secondly, We have tested through 2000 to 3500 rpm rotational speed to find the maximum power and efficiency of the expander. And last, It was observed in the initial experiments that the design of the expander's orbiting scroll wrap partially blocked the fluid intake which may have caused unnecessary flow resistance. To verify this theory, a small part of the scroll wrap was removed and the performance test was redone. It was observed that the lower back pressure assure the higher efficiency and power of expander and the rotational speed that shows maximum adiabetic efficiency of scroll expander is 69% at 2500 rpm. And by modified wrap of the scroll, we could get volume flow rate for 13% to 19% and power for 5% to 18% increased. But the maximum efficiency of the modified scroll was decreased 8%.

The swirling flow developing in Francis turbine draft tube under part load operation leads to pressure fluctuations usually in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 times the runner rotational frequency resulting from the so-called vortex breakdown. For low cavitation number, the flow features a cavitation vortex rope animated with precession motion. Under given conditions, these pressure fluctuations may lead to undesirable pressure fluctuations in the entire hydraulic system and also produce active power oscillations. For the upper part load range, between 0.7 and 0.85 times the best efficiency discharge, pressure fluctuations may appear in a higher frequency range of 2 to 4 times the runner rotational speed and feature modulations with vortex rope precession. It has been pointed out that for this particular operating point, the vortex rope features elliptical cross section and is animated of a self-rotation. This paper presents an experimental investigation focusing on this peculiar phenomenon, defined as the upper part load vortex rope. The experimental investigation is carried out on a high specific speed Francis turbine scale model installed on a test rig of the EPFL Laboratory for Hydraulic Machines. The selected operating point corresponds to a discharge of 0.83 times the best efficiency discharge. Observations of the cavitation vortex carried out with high speed camera have been recorded and synchronized with pressure fluctuations measurements at the draft tube cone. First, the vortex rope self rotation frequency is evidenced and the related frequency is deduced. Then, the influence of the sigma cavitation number on vortex rope shape and pressure fluctuations is presented. The waterfall diagram of the pressure fluctuations evidences resonance effects with the hydraulic circuit. The influence of outlet bubble cavitation and air injection is also investigated for low cavitation number. The time evolution of the vortex rope volume is compared with pressure fluctuations time evolution using image processing. Finally, the influence of the Froude number on the vortex rope shape and the associated pressure fluctuations is analyzed by varying the rotational speed.
