  • Recently, while rockfall occurs very frequently, a lot of researches on the rockfall protection fence Is in process. But the rockfall protection fence has been installed unrelated to slope characteristics, rockfall shape and rockfall height. Therefore, in this study we suggested the effective protection fence model considering about rockfall energy and energy absorbing capacity and we verified the model by field test. According to these results, it is more reasonable to evaluate rockfall energy based on the results of simulation program, which can be consider effects of energy decrease, than use the simplified method proposed by Japanese road association. And rockfall energy is affected by the size of supports and wire rope and the space of supports. As the results of comparing rockfall energy with energy absorbing capacity, type$\circled1$(the space of supports is changed to 3.0m)can be available for generally expected rockfall except the rock slope over 30m heights. But rockfall protection fence installed at the field, it should be partially reinforced after consideration of slope particularities and construction conditions.

  • This study analyzed activity of rockfall and its effect factor by the shape and mass. We performed research on the kinetic energy distribution, velocity and bounce height according to the rockfall characteristics using rockfall simulation program in cut-slope. In addition, this study discussed how to utilize kinetic energy and bounce height of rockfall for efficient establishment of rockfall prevention fence which is a countermeasure to cut-slope.

  • The National Park Service is making efforts to create a safe environment by installing rockfall prevention facilities (rockfall prevention nets, fences, and Piam tunnels) in areas at risk of falling rocks. However, the occurrence of falling rocks is increasing every year due to torrential rains caused by climate change, abnormal temperatures in winter, and aging of the ground, and the need to improve the existing rock risk area management plan has emerged. In this study, a pilot area at risk of falling rocks was selected for the Hwanggol district of Chiaksan National Park among Korean national parks, and rockfall analysis was performed using the Rockfall program, and monitoring was conducted by applying a countermeasure method combined with the measurement system to the pilot area. Through this, a rockfall management plan was proposed for continuous management and monitoring of rockfall.

  • The rockfall protection fences are installed to reduce rockfall damage in roads side slopes. The energy absorbing capacity of widely used rockfall protection fences is about 50kJ, But in many cases, rockfall protection fences are easily damaged even by a low level of rockfall energy. The objective of this paper is to verify the energy absorbing capacity of rockfall protection fences and investigate the behavior of them by rockfall. The LS-DYNA3D, a finite elements analysis program for dynamic movement of three dimensional objects, is used to perform the numerical simulations. In the result it is shown that rockfall protection fences absorb half of standard absorbing energy or less than it. It is inadquate for the rockfall protection fences to perform the principal function. To improve the performance of the fences, new rockfall proctection fence is proposed and numerical simulation is performed.

  • The rockfall protection fence installed to secure safety against rockfall occurring in cut slope has been designed under the condition with 50kJ of impact energy arising when the 400kg of rock block is falling from 12.5m height. However, in falling case of bigger rock block or from higher place, it is hard to be secure of safety with existing rockfall protection fence. Using the rockfall program, safety analysis for rockfall is conducted in this paper by changing slope height, separating distance from fence, and slope angle, according to rock block sizes. In the result of analysis, when a 400kg of rock block which is designed load is fallen, the existing rockfall protection fence with 2.5m height can secure most of rock fall except some cases for the slope having 20m or less hight, whereas for more than 20m height, the fallen rock is frequently splattered over the rockfall protection fence, as well as the impact energy of rockfall may exceed designed impact energy. Therefore, in the design of rock fence, it is considered appropriate to design that after conducting safety review for rockfall according to the ground conditions, evaluating the bounce height and impact energy of rock fall, and then installing appropriate rockfall protection fence would be applicable rather than just following standards based design drawing.

  • Recently, with the establishment of active stabilization measures, large-scale collapse of slopes is decreasing. However, the frequency of rockfalls due to the destabilization of floating stones or boulder within or above the slope has not been decreased significantly. As a measure for stabilizing rockfall and disaster prevention, protection methods such as rockfall barriers and rockfall protection nets are typically applied. However, the approach to catching the rockfall in a catchment area by reducing the energy of the rockfall and changing the rolling condition of the rockfall is relatively insignificant. Therefore, in this study, using a general-purpose rockfall simulation program, the change in the rolling characteristics of rockfall according to the specifications of the ditch installed under the slope was investigated. It is expected that the research results can be used as basic data to determine the specifications of the ditch that can be applied to general roads or trails.

  • In this study, We peformed on the effective evaluation of slope berm construction using slope stability analysis programs. The effective evaluation of slope berm construction was performed by stability of slope and economy of construction. This time, used slope stability analysis programs are Talren97 that use Limit equilibrium method (LEM) and FLAC-SLOPE that use finite difference method (FDM), and carried out using Rocfall program to evaluate slope stability by rockfall occurrence.

  • Various development works inevitably increase cutting slopes due to land use, and many of trails managed by different authorities are being deteriorated by long-term weathering. Collapse of slopes causes unavoidable damage of property and loss of lives because of its uncertainty and difficulty in predicting its occurrence. In order to overcome the unavoidability, America, Japan, and several European nations analyze the kinetic energy and moving distance when rocks of upper slope move along the inclined plane, via field tests and computerized interpretation of the test results. Also, they are making efforts to develop measures with which the kinetic energy of the rocks moving along the slope is absorbed and fails to reach to specific structures. However, domestic researches just focus on fragmentary prediction of rockfall using existing programs, and there have been few approaches to identify interpretation methods appropriate for domestic cases or determination of parameters. In this context, we in this study defined rockfall types and affecting factors and analyzed effects of parameters using a general-purpose rockfall simulation program to understand principles of rockfall and to estimate effects of various parameters.
