스마트센서를 활용한 근골격계 질환 위험 평가 플랫폼 (A Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorder Risk Assessment Platform using Smart Sensor)

  • Economic burden of work-related musculoskeletal disorder(WMDs) is increasing. Known causes of WMDs include improper posture, repetition, load, and temperature of workplace. Among them, improper postures play an important role. A smart sensor called SensorTag is employed to estimate the trunk postures including flexion-extension, lateral bend, and the trunk rotational speeds. Measuring gravitational acceleration vector in the smart sensor along the tri-orthogonal axes offers an orientation of the object with the smart sensor attached to. The smart sensor is light in weight and has small form factor, making it an ideal wearable sensor for body posture measurement. Measured data from the smart senor is wirelessly transferred for analysis to a smartphone which has enough computing power, data storage and internet-connectivity, removing need for additional hardware for data post-processing. Based on the estimated body postures, WMDs risks can be conviently gauged by using existing WMDs risk assesment methods such as OWAS, RULA, REBA, etc.

  • Governments and industry have a growing interest in the harmonization of environmental test methods and risk assessment procedures. OECD are currently producing a set of harmonised test guidelines for studying the environmental fate and ecological effects of pesticides. FAO has published an environmental risk assessment procedure. This procedure, which is similar to those used in US and Europe, is based on calculating the ratio of the toxicity of a pesticide to indicator organisms to their level of exposure to the pesticide. The exposure depends on both the concentration of the pesticide and its bioavailability. Ratios which indicate a pesticide will not produce a harmful effect have been established using ecological field studies. Examples are presented for assessing the risk to aquatic ecosystems, earthworms and honeybees. Long-term field studies(up to 20 years) have also shown that pesticides can be used indefinitely without harming soil fertility. Herbicides can be used to avoid the ecologically damaging effects of using soil cultivations excessively for weed control.

물안전계획(Water Safety Plan)의 국내 도입방안 (Introduction of Water Safety Plan in Korea)

  • Recently, drinking water quality has significantly improved with the progress of water treatment technologies, however, customer's trust on tap water is still relatively low. Low trust on water quality is mainly due to vague anxiety. Therefore, to improve customer's trust on drinking water quality new strategy such as water safety plan(WSP) which recommended by WHO and IWA should be introduced. WSP can be defined as an approach which uses comprehensive risk assessment and risk management approach that encompasses all steps in water supply from catchment to consumer to ensure the safety of a drinking water supply. In this study, cases on WSP introduction in other countries as well as strategy for the introduction of WSP in Korea were investigated. In addition, recommendations on the improvement of the current water contamination response manual was suggested based on the analysis of the existing manual at a full scale water treatment plant.

  • Recently, in the national railway industry there has been interested in the methodology of hazard analysis and risk assessment. The need of safety management system based on the technology of hazard analysis and risk assessment is being extended to identify in advance the weakness and threat factors causing the accident and cope with the accident actively. It is important to manage the risk of railway casualty accidents having a majority of railway accident. Especially, a hazard event of people struck takes the highest proportion of the railway casualty accidents. This paper describes the result of analysis for environment properties such as an age of casualty, time happened, day, month and weather conditions being concerned in the hazard event of people struck.

식품 중 유해물질 과학적 관리: 잔류농약을 중심으로 (Scientific management of hazardous substances in foods: Focusing on pesticide residues)

  • The government should establish internationally harmonious regulations for effective import and export of necessary resources to other countries. However, the use and the number of pesticides used for the same purpose on same crops are depending on the soil and the climate where the crops are grown. Therefore, if internationally harmonized standards are difficult to establish, it is mandatory to conduct a risk assessment based on scientific data to reflect the domestic situation in order to avoid trade friction or conflict between countries. The government is preparing the implementation of a more regulated PLS (positive list systme) than the existing pesticide management system for safer pesticide management reflecting the recent increasing imported food, changing dietary habits, and changing climate. In order for effectively safe and scientific management of pesticides, the government should strive to communicate with consumers properly and the perception of pesticides by consumers should also be changed.

  • Based on the results of Probabilistic Safety Assessment(PSA) for a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Common Cause Failure(CCF) events have been recognized as one of the main contributors to the risk. Also, the CCF data and estimation method used in domestic PSA models have been pointed out as an issue with respect to the quality. The existing method of MGL and non-staggered testing even widely used were considered conservative in estimating the safety and had a limited capability in uncertainty analyses. Therefore, this paper presents the CCF estimation using a new generic data source and Alpha factor method. The analyses showed that Alpha factor and staggered method are effective in estimating the CCF contribution and risk insights of reference plant. This method will be a common bases for the optimization of new design for the construction plants as well as for the updating of safety assessment on the operating nuclear power plants.

  • Recently because of high-speed operation of trains, railway crossings become more and more hazardous components among the whole ones of railway system. It is desirable to remove all the railway crossings for reducing fatalities at railway crossings. it is impossible to eliminate all the crossings for unrealistic investment, so it should be considered to construct multi-level crossings by the order of priority. In this paper operation conditions, various hazard factors on the train accident at domestic railway crossings and foreign cases of risk-based safety assessment models are reviewed and then necessary record data that be added and modified, some essential considerations for developing railway crossing safety assessment software program are proposed.

인증비행시험 안전관리 및 위험도 평가기법 연구 (A Study on the Safety Management and Risk Assessment of the Certification Flight Test)

  • Certification flight test is very risky and there are many hazards. Because the flight test is performed with the aircraft, that is safety and flight characteristics are not proven. And the test items and conditions are critical. If there is loss of aircraft during certification flight test, the certification program, development period can be delayed. Therefore, maintaining safety of the aircraft during flight test is very important. There are not much flight test experiences in Korea. However, developed nations has long history of flight test and experiences of flight test accidents. Based on these experiences, they has developed systematic management methods for the flight test safety. In this study, I would like to introduce safety management and risk assessment of the certification flight test.

Probabilistic seismic risk assessment of simply supported steel railway bridges

  • Fragility analysis is an effective tool that is frequently used for seismic risk assessment of bridges. There are three different approaches to derive a fragility curve: experimental, empirical and analytical. Both experimental and empirical methods to derive fragility curve are based on past earthquake reports and expert opinions which are not suitable for all bridges. Therefore, analytical fragility analysis becomes important. Nonlinear time history analysis is commonly used which is the most reliable method for determining probabilistic demand models. In this study, to determine the probabilistic demand models of bridges, time history analyses were performed considering both material and geometrical nonlinearities. Serviceability limit states for three different service velocities were considered as a performance goal. Also, support displacements, component yielding and collapse limits were taken into account. Both serviceability and component fragility were derived by using maximum likely hood methods. Finally, the seismic performance and critical members of the bridge were probabilistically determined and clearly presented.
