  • When Web-based special retrieval systems for scientific field extremely restrict the expression of user's information request, the process of the information content analysis and that of the information acquisition become inconsistent. In this paper, we apply the fuzzy retrieval model to solve the high time complexity of the retrieval system by constructing a reduced term set for the term's relatively importance degree. Furthermore, we perform a cluster retrieval to reflect the user's Query exactly through the similarity relation matrix satisfying the characteristics of the fuzzy compatibility relation. We have proven the performance of a proposed re-ranking model based on the similarity union of the fuzzy retrieval model and the document cluster retrieval model.

  • The concept based retrieval model has shown a higher performance than those of the simple matching function method or the P-norm retrieval method introduced to compensate the demerits of the Boolean retrieval model. However. it takes too long to create a semantic-net knowledge base, which is essential in concept exploration. In order to solve such demerits. a method was sought out by creating a distributed knowledge base by subjects to reduce construction time without hindering the performance of retrieval.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a useful relevance feedback retrieval technique that can be applied to the current Boolean retrieval system. A feedback retrieval technique based on user model is recommended here to achieve this objective. To prove the usefulness of this feedback retrieval technique, two enhanced Boolean retrieval models including DNF model and P-norm model were evaluated first through retrieval effectiveness experiments. After selecting DNF model as the retrieval model, two feedback retrieval experiments were performed using initial and extended user models. It is proved that the feedback retrieval based on user model can greatly enhance the effectiveness of a Boolean retrieval system with a small modification.

  • This paper proposes a new referential model for data retrieval as an alternative to exact matching. While exact matching is an effective data retrieval model, it is based on fairly strict assumptions and limits our capabilities in data retrieval. This study redefines data retrieval to include non-binary data retrieval in addition to binary data retrieval, proposes Double Anchor Preference Model (DAPM), and analyzes its logical charateristics. DAPM supports non-binary data retrieval. Further, it produces the same result as exact matching for the conventional binary data retrieval. These findings show that, at the logical level, the proposed DAPM retains all the desirable features for data retrieval.

  • One of the major challenge for retrieval performance is the word mismatch between user's queries and documents in information retrieval. To solve the word mismatch problem, we propose a retrieval model based on the degree of association of query concept and word translation probabilities in translation-based model. The word translation probabilities are calculated based on the set of a sentence and its succeeding sentence pair. To validate the proposed method, we experimented on TREC AP test collection. The experimental results show that the proposed model achieved significant improvement over the language model and outperformed translation-based language model.

  • XML documents format on the Web provides a mechanism to impose their content and logical structure information. Therefore, an XML processor provides access to their content and structure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the usefulness of structural hints in the leaf node language model-based XML document retrieval. In order to this purpose, this experiment tested the performances of the leaf node language model-based XML retrieval system to compare the queries for a topic containing only content-only constraints and both content constrains and structure constraints. A newly designed and implemented leaf node language model-based XML retrieval system was used. And we participated in the ad-hoc track of INEX 2005 and conducted an experiment using a large-scale XML test collection provided by INEX 2005.

  • This experimental study suggests an element-based XML document retrieval method that reveals highly relevant elements. The models investigated here for comparison are divergence and smoothing method, and hierarchical language model. In conclusion, the hierarchical language model proved to be most effective in element-based XML document retrieval with regard to the improved exhaustivity and harmed specificity.

  • Case-based reasoning (CBR) method can make estimators understand the estimation process more clearly. Thus, CBR is widely used as a methodology for cost estimation. In CBR, the quality of case retrieval affects the relevance of retrieved cases and hence the overall quality of the reminding capability of CBR system. Thus, it is essential to retrieve relevant past cases for establishing a robust CBR system. Case retrieval needs the following tasks to obtain appropriate case(s); indexing, search, and matching (Aamodt and Plaza 1994). However, the previous CBR researches mostly deal with matching process that has limits such as accuracy and efficiency of case retrieval. In order to address this issue, this research presents a CBR cost model for building projects that has two-step retrieval process: decision tree and nearest neighbor methods. Specifically, the proposed cost model has indexing, search and matching modules. Features in the model are divided into shape-based and scale-based attributes. Based on these, decision tree is established for facilitating the search task and nearest neighbor method was utilized for matching task. In regard to applying nearest neighbor method, attribute weights are assigned using GA optimization and similarity is calculated using the principle of distance measuring. Thereafter, the proposed CBR cost model is developed using 174 cases and validated using 12 test cases.

  • In this paper, we present the HVIS (Hybrid Video Information System) which bolsters up meaning retrieval of all the various users by integrating feature-based retrieval and annotation-based retrieval of unformatted formed and massive video data. HVIS divides a set of video into video document, sequence, scene and object to model the metadata and suggests the Two layered Hybrid Object-oriented Metadata Model(THOMM) which is composed of raw-data layer for physical video stream, metadata layer to support annotation-based retrieval, content-based retrieval, and similarity retrieval. Grounded on this model, we presents the video query language which make the annotation-based query, content-based query and similar query possible and Video Query Processor to process the query and query processing algorithm. Specially, We present the similarity expression to appear degree of similarity which considers interesting of user. The proposed system is implemented with Visual C++, ActiveX and ORACLE.

  • An Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems(AS/RS) has been gradually emphasized because of the change of production and distribution environment. This paper develops algorithm and Shortest Distance Model that can reduce the traveling time of a stacker crane for efficient operation of AS/RS. In order to reduce the traveling time of a stacker crane, we determine the order processing and then the sequencing of storage/retrieval for each item. Order processing is determined based on the SPT(Shortest Processing Time) concept considering a criterion of retrieval coordinate. The sequencing of storage/retrieval is determined based on the Shortest Distance Model by using a modified SPP(Shortest Path Problem) of network problem. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the developed algorithm and Shortest Distance Model.
