Laser shock peening(LSP) is proving to be better surface treatment than conventional one such as shot peening. The LSP process has a compressive residual stress into a metal alloy and a significant improvement in fatigue life. Our research is focused on applying finite element method to the prediction of residual stress through the LSP processing in some LSP conditions such as pressure and spot size induced by laser. Two analysis methods are considered to calculating the compressive residual stress. But the explicit solution and the static one after partially explicit solving are almost same. In LSP, because of very high strain rate($10^6s^{-1}$), HEL(Hugoniot Elastic Limit) is the most important parameter in material behavior modeling. As the circular laser spot is considered, 2-D axisymmetric elements are used and the infinite elements are applied to boundaries for no reflection. The relations of material properties and the LSP are also important parts in this study.
Plastics is commonly used in consumer electronics because of it is high strength per unit mass and good productivity. But plastic parts are usually distorted after injection molding due to the residual stress after filling, packing, cooling process, and etc. And plastic material is to be deteriorated according to various temperature conditions and operating time, which can be characterized by stress relaxation and creep. The viscoelastic behavior of plastic materials in time domain can be expressed by the Prony series of the commercial code, ABAQUS. In the paper, the process to predict the post deformation under cyclic thermal loadings was suggested. The process was applied to the real panel, and the deformation predicted by the analysis was compared with that of real test, which showed the possibility of applying the suggested process to predict the post deformation of plastic product under thermal loadings.
Partial penetration welding joint refers to the groove weld that applies to the one side welding which does not use steel backing and to both side welding without back gouging, that is, the partial penetration welding joint leaves an unwelded portion at the root of the welding area. In this study, we analyzed the residual stress and fracture on the thick metal plates that introduced the partial penetration welding method. According to the above-mentioned welding method, we could draw a conclusion that longitudinal stress and traverse stress occurred around the welding area are so minimal and do not affect any influence. We also performed the fracture behavior evaluation on the partial penetration multi pass welding with 25.4 mm thick plate by using the J-integral, which finally led us the conclusion that the partial penetration multi-pass welding method is more applicable and effective in handling the root face with less than 6.35 mm.

TiNi alloy fiber was used to solve the problem of the tensile residual stress as the reinforced material. TiNi alloy fiber improves the tensile strength of composite by occurring compressive residual stress in the matrix using shape memory effect. In order to generate compressive residual stress in TiNi/Al6061 shape memory alloy(SMA) composite, 1, 3 and 5% pre-strains were applied to the composite in advance. It was also evaluated the effect of compressive residual stress corresponding to the pre-strain variation and the volume fraction of TiNi alloy. AE technique was used to clarify the microscopic damage behavior at high temperature and the effect of pre-strain in TiNi/Al6061 SMA composite. The results of the microscopic damage evaluation of TiNi/Al6061 SMA composite under various pre-strain using AE technique can be divided into three stage corresponding to the AE signals. AE counts and events were useful parameters to evaluate the fracture mechanism according to the variation of pre-strain. In addition, two dimensional AE source location technique was applied for monitoring the crack initiation and propagation in composite.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the structural safety at the topside weldment of hull structure, which was welded after launching. For it, the variations of residual stress and distortion at the topside weldment with loading conditions such as hull girder hogging bending moment after launching and free initial loading state was evaluated by using FEA. And the maximum stress range at the weldment under design loads specified by classification society was evaluated by FEA. In this case, the residual stress and welding distortion at the topside weldment was assumed to be initial imperfection. In accordance with FEA results, regardless of initial loading condition, tensile residual stress was found. However, the residual stress and welding distortion at the topside weldment produced under hogging condition was less than those of topside weldment under free loading state. That is, the amount of residual stress at the topside weldment decreased with an increase in the amount of tension load caused by hogging condition. It was because the compressive thermal strain at the topside weldment produced during welding was reduced by tensile load. However, the maximum stress range at the topside weldment under maximum hull girder bending moment was almost similar regardless of initial loading condition. So, if the problem related to the soundness of weldment is not introduced by initial load, the effect of initial loading condition during welding on fatigue strength of topside weldment could be negligible.
In this paper, the effect of the compressive residual stresses was obtained at the test conditions of the higher temperature than the ambient temperature. The examination was performed with the CT specimen result of the material(JISG SUP9) which is being commonly used for the marine engine parts and the ocean structures. As a result, the test conditions at the higher temperature were acquired considering the peak values of the compressive residual stresses of the specimens and the effect on the fatigue crack propagation speed da/dN in stage II and the threshold stress intensity factor range Δth in stage I. Also the material constant C and the fatigue crack propagation index m in the formula of Paris Law da/dN=C (ΔK)$^{m}$ were suggested to estimate the dependence on the test temperature.

The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of welding residual stresses on the fatigue crack growth behavior of cracks located transverse to the weld bead. For this purpose, G. T. A (Gas Tungsten Arc) welding was performed on hte Al alloy 1100-O plate and the same initial crack is made on HAZ(Heat Affected Zone), weld metal and base meta respectively. Specimens were used CT(Compact Tension) specimens. Initial welding residual stresses were measured by using strai gage sectioning method. All specimens were tested under constant amplitude load with stress ratio R=0.1, It is possible to predict fatigue crack growth behaviors and the fatigue life, using numerical analysis together with distribution of initial residual stress and the values of C and m obtained from $da/dN-{\Delta}K$

This research proposes FEM analysis for Tandem welding process used in wind tower and predicts optimal welding process to improve the stability of welded structures. Three dimensional elasto-plastic analyses are employed to evaluate thermo-mechanical behavior of residual stress and deformation during Tandem welding for different distance between two touches. To confirm the thermal distribution, Goldak's ellipse heat source model and the real size wind tower pipe model are utilized. Four different analyses are being performed, where in each case the distance between two electrode torches is being changed and residual stress and welding deformation are predicted. Depending on base material state, each case is divided into: Liquid (100mm), Austenite+Liquid (200mm), Austenite+Cementite (400mm), Pearlite+Cementite (800mm).
The purpose of this paper is to provide and verify an analytical method, based on the spline finite strip method, which can be used to investigate the buckling mode and stress of thin-walled steel sections. Geometric imperfection and initial stress of plates and plate assemblies, which are resulted from various preloadings and may cause prebuckling deformations before buckling, are included in the analysis. Material nonlinearity and residual stress are also considered. It can be applied to sections with simple or non-simple boundary conditions and arbitrary loading. The method has been applied to investigate the buckling behavior of plates and plate assemblies which are subjected to compression with initial imperfections and residual stresses.
The aim of this study is to investigate the inelastic buckling behavior of the beams under moment gradient using a line-type finite element method. The method is incorporated the non-uniform yielding of the cross-section caused by the presence of residual stress and accepted model of residual stress so called 'simplified' and 'polynomial' pattern is adopted in this study. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling results obtained in this study is compared with the buckling results obtained from the design method based on the allowable stress method given in Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study have found that the design method in KSDM (1995) is conservative without and with intermediate bracing applied at the mid span of the beam, and there is some scope for improving the provisions of KSDM (1995)
