  • Since string operations were applied to computational biology area, various data structures and algorithms for computing efficient string operations have been studied. The longest common substring problem is an operation to find the longest matching substring in more than two strings, and maximal repeat of string problem is an operation to find substrings repeated more than once in the given string. These operations are importantly used in the string processing area such as pattern matching and likelihood measurement. In this paper, we present algorithms to compute the longest common substring of two strings and to find the maximal repeat of string using three-dimensional $n{\times}n{\times}n$ processors on RMESH(Reconfigurable MESH). Our algorithms have O(1) time complexity.

  • Purpose: To analyze the result of a repeat discectomy for ipsilateral recurrent lumbar disc herniation and to investigate the potential factors that influenced the outcomes for this surgery. Materials and Methods: Fifty-nine patients, who underwent reoperation after lumbar discectomy with a minimum follow-up period of 2 years, were reviewed. The surgical outcome was assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and Macnab classification, and the recovery rate was calculated in accordance with VAS. A statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS to evaluate the possible factors that may have influenced the outcomes of the reoperation. Results: The rate of reoperation after lumbar disc surgery due to the recurrent disc herniation was 6.0% (59/983 cases). The average recovery rate of VAS from the 1st operation was approximately 77%, and from the 2nd operation was 71%. According to the Macnab criteria, the results were "excellent" or "good" in 96% of cases. Statistical analysis revealed that there was no difference of the average recovery rate (p<0.05). There is no additional instability after repeat discectomy. Factors, such as smoking, precipitating traumatic events, and diabetes mellitus did not have much influence on the average recovery rate after repeat discectomy for ipsilateral recurrent lumbar disc herniation. Conclusion: The outcomes of repeat discectomy were satisfactory. Moreover, factors, smoking, trauma history and diabetic mellitus, only had a minor impact on the outcomes of a repeat discectomy.

  • This research investigates how a Virtual Reality (VR)-based simulation could be used to train safe operation skills for forklift operators. Forklift operation is categorized as high-risk work by many occupational health and safety regulators and authorities due to high injury and fatality rates involved with forklifts. Therefore, many safety guidelines have been developed for forklift operators. Typically, forklift operation safety training is delivered based on instructional texts or videos, which have limitations in influencing people's safety behavior. Against this background, we propose a VR-based forklift simulator that can enable safe operation skills training through a feedback system. The training program consists of several modules to teach how to perform the basic tasks of forklift operation, such as driving, loading and unloading, following the safety guidelines. The system provides instantaneous instructions and feedback regarding safe operation. This training system is based on the model of "learning-by-doing". The user can repeat the training modules as many times as necessary before being able to perform the given task without violating any safety guidelines. The last training module tests the user's acquisition of all safety skills required. The user feedback from several demonstration sessions showed the potential usefulness of the proposed training system.

  • Four patients underwent lumbar surgery. In all four patients, the dura was minimally torn during the operation. However, none exhibited signs of postoperative cerebrospinal fluid leakage. In each case, a few days after the operation, the patient suddenly experienced severe recurring pain in the leg. Repeat magnetic resonance imaging showed transdural nerve rootlets entrapped in the intervertebral disc space. On exploration, ventral dural tears and transdural nerve rootlet entrapment were confirmed. Midline durotomy, herniated rootlet repositioning, and ventral dural tear repair were performed, and patients' symptoms improved after rootlet repositioning. Even with minimal dural tearing, nerve rootlets may become entrapped, resulting in severe recurring symptoms. Therefore, the dural tear must be identified and repaired during the first operation.

  • Pusher-Loaded Scrapers are important construction equipment for large earthmoving operations. Production rates of a Pusher-Loaded Scraper vary greatly in accordance with the temperature or elevation, the equipment performance, haul speed, haul-road conditions, the method of loading, and Number of scrapers per one pusher. Determining of most economical scrapers fleet regarding the size of equipment, model name, and number of scrapers demands time-consuming calculation because it needs to reference of varied performance charts or tables and repeat complicated calculation. In this study, decision-making support system for the Optimal Pusher-loaded Scrapers Fleet is suggested for the purpose of calculating easily and handling effectively variables which are changed depend of the work conditions. The prototype of this program is developed using MATLAB. And the Database of Pusher-loaded Scraper embodies Performance chart & Retarder chart, soil properties, and calculation-support table.

  • In this paper, we deal with an allocation model of vertical type container yard for minimizing the total ATC (Automated Transfer Crane) working time and the equivalence of ATC working load in each block on automated container terminal. Firstly, a layout of automated container terminal yard is shown The characteristic of equipment which work in the terminal and its basic assumption are given Next, an allocation model which concerns with minimizing the total working time and the equivalence of working load is proposed for effectiveness of ATC working in automated container terminal. Also, a weight values on critical function are suggested to adjust the critical values by evaluating the obtained allocation plan. For ATC allocation algorithm, we suggest a simple repeat algorithm for on-line terminal operation.

  • Normally, using coating material could result in different performance according to the various changes of environments or operation conditions. For these reasons, there are decreasing tendency for the durability, beauty and scenery of structures as the separation or exfoliation occurred after operation. Especially we must find out not only bond strength characteristics of coating material under temperature conditions but also bond strength reduction under heating-cooling repeat test because Korea has four distinct seasons. In this paper, the deformation and bond strength characteristics of coating material have been investigated. and we suggest some preliminary data of coating material for its best performance under various temperature condition.

  • Splanchnic nerve block (SNB) is performed to relieve intractable upper abdominal pain caused by carcinoma of the upper G-I tract. Not all patients achieve satisfactory pain relief; therefore, a second or third nerve block trial may need to be performed. In this study, an attempt was made to analyze the possible factors which might affect the result of repeated SNB in 42 the patients among 264 patients who received SNB at Severance Hospital during the period from January 1985 to December 1989. The results are as follows: 1) Among the 42 patients, including 30 males and 12 females, the fifties and forties were the major age groups. 2) Among the underlying diseases, stomach cancer was the most common (18 cases) and pancreatic cancer was next (14 cases). 3) The main locations of pain were the upper abdomen, epigastrium and entire abdomen in decreasing order. 4) Among the thirty-nine cases of first SNB combined with ascites, 13 cases received a repeat block, 81.0% of whom had had metastatic lesion. 5) There were 54.2% who had had single or combined treatment, operation, chemotherapy or radiotherapy before SNB. 6) Twently seven cases (64.3%) had received opioid medication for pain control. 7) In the 75% alcohol group, 11.7% of patients required a second block, and in the pure and 50% alcohol group, 9.6% of patients required a second block within two weeks of the first block. Three cases in both of these repeated block groups required a third block; representing 3.9%, of the 75% alcohol group and 1.6% of the pure and 50% alcohol group. 8) The volume of alcohol used was more than 16 ml bilaterally in both cases. 9) The points of the inserted needle were positioned in the upper and anterolateral part of the $L_1$ vertebra on both sides on the anteroposterior roentgenogram. The contrast media was spread upward along the anterior margin of the vertebral body and posteriorly in repeat block. The frequency of repeat block was higher in cases with ascites or metastasis. The instance of repeat block within 2 weeks of the first block was lower in the pure and 50% alcohol group than in the 75% alcohol group. Thus, alcohol concentration and patient status may be considered factors which influence the result of repeated SNB. We suggest early application of SNB in upper abdominal cancer patients.
