  • The advance of science and technology becomes the nerves of the development of economy and industry of our future in the regional level as well as in the national and international level. In Korea, it has been more than 10 years since local governments launched, and they are strategically fostering their specialized regional industries. Both the central government and the regional governments prepare and execute policies to foster specialized regional industries. Though there are many kinds of methods to analyze the outcomes of science and technology of region, in this paper, we measure the outcomes of science and technology of region by applying an informetric analysis on the SCIE papers and USPA patents. To seek for the regional speciality, we analyze the total national outcomes and the regional outcomes of S&T activities in Korea.

  • This paper is to consider trends and issues of regional research in major sub-fields of human geography in Korea, following the previous one which dealt with contexts and general trends of new regional geography in Korea since the 2000s. They include historical and cultural geography on place and landscape, economic geography on industrial districts or agglomerated regions (i.e. clusters) and urban (and social) geography on urban networks and differentiation. Even though researchers in sub-fields have used different terms and concepts to identify region, they are in common to relate specificities of region to general processes such as (de)modernization, (de)industrialization, and globalization, to understand region as social and discursive constitution as well as substantive reality, and to give more attention to socio-spatial networks and relationality than territoriality of regions. These common points seem to reflect the emerging trend of new regional geography, and to get rid of existing traditional concept of region. It is suggested that major tasks for conceptualization of region in future research are to overcome dichotomy of speciality and generality, of substantive reality and discursive constitution, and of territoriality and relationality, and that important issues for empirical research on region include regional synthesis from new perspectives, uneven regional development as relational process in and between regions, and producing practice for alternative regions.

  • This paper aims at renewing the regional innovation system being embossed increasingly as a new paradigm to develop the regional area, using the innovational cluster based on the industrial properties and innovative base in Chungbuk province. As shown in the results of many researches, Chungbuk province is evaluated highly in regional innovation capability and is satisfied with the level of speciality in technical industry so that it has a potential capability to build the regional innovation system. However the clustering competition is growing in intensity between regional groups and there is a possible situation centralized by the high-tech industry into the metropolitan, so building the specialized innovation cluster requires advanced policy decisions and efforts in our won way. Ultimately, for the purpose of structuring the regional innovation system, the specialized innovation cluster reflected in regional industry and capability would be essential. It is time for Chungbuk province to prepare policies in order to make the Chungbuk-type innovation cluster which is neither uniform nor omnipresent.

In addition, this thesis has an aim to offer profitable materials on the basis of demonstrative analysis emphasizing the study on how many factors of satisfaction should be motivated by participation effect. This thesis restricted cookers within those who had participated in a cooking contest so that it could possibly measure the motive of participation and satisfaction. This thesis investigated 115 cookers by questionnaires, of which 102 available materials were used for statistical processing to perform this study. As for the periodical interval, this thesis was performed from Feb 14, 2005 to Feb 21, 2005. First, from the motive of participation, 13 variables are analyzed into 3 factors such as the factor of social recognition, the factor of speciality, and the factor of self-development & self- realization. The factor of speciality, and the factor of self-development & self-realization. The factor as a motive of participating in skill competition affects effectiveness meaningfully. Second, total three factors were extracted from the degree of satisfaction which consisted of 13 variables. They included the psychological satisfaction and satisfaction with the judges in competitions. One limitation of this study is that the population of the survey was limited to those who had participated in a contest. Thus, the findings of this study may not be generalizable for other cases. It is clear that further research is needed to collect more in-dept data from other similar competitions as a effort to extend its application to other studies.
