  • Dye-sensitized solar cell has many internal resistant components such as Pt counter electrode, $TiO_2$/dye/electrolyte, charge diffusion, sheet resistance of TCO. Among these, the resistance about the counter electrode can be reduced by increasing the roughness factor of Pt counter electrode. This causes the increase of fill factor and improvement of efficiency. And the amount of light reflection on the counter electrode also increases as the roughness factor goes up. In our experiment, we suggest a new deposition structure of Pt thin film that is a stepped-type structure. The more step lines are in the counter electrode, the more roughness factor is. As a result, we get the improvement of fill factor and efficiency by controlling the roughness factor of counter electrode.

  • In the present investigation reflection and transmission of plane waves at an elastic half space and piezothermoelastic solid half space with fractional order derivative is discussed. The piezothermoelastic solid half space is assumed to have 6 mm type symmetry and assumed to be loaded with an elastic half space. It is found that the amplitude ratios of various reflected and refracted waves are functions of angle of incidence, frequency of incident wave and are influenced by the piezothermoelastic properties of media. The expressions of amplitude ratios and energy ratios are obtained in closed form. The energy ratios are computed numerically using amplitude ratios for a particular model of graphite and Cadmium Selenide (CdSe). The variations of energy ratios with angle of incidence are shown graphically. The conservation of energy across the interface is verified. Some cases of interest are also deduced from the present investigation.

  • In teleoperation field robotic system such as hydraulically actuated robotic excavator, the maneuverability and convenience is the most important part in the operation of robotic excavator. Particularly the force information is important in dealing with digging and leveling operation in the teleoperated excavator. Excavators are also subject to a wide variation of soil-tool interaction forces. This paper presents a new force reflecting joystick in a velocity-force type bilateral teleoperation system. The master system is electrical joystick and the slave system is hydraulically actuated cylinder with linear position sensor. Particularly Pneumatic motor is used newly in the master joystick for force reflection and the information of the pressure of salve cylinder is measured and utilized as the force feedback signal. Also force-reflection gain greatly affects the ...

  • A theoretical model for the evaluation of small surface fatigue crack initiated from a pit-type surface flaw is presented. The low frequency scattering model is developed based on the reciprocity principle for the elastic wave scattering. The effect of the flaw on the surface wave reflection from the crack is taken into account approximately by means of the stress intensity factor of cracks on a through thickness hole. The reflection coefficient of surface wave is derived for the prediction of small surface crack depth. Calculated results for pits with different sizes are illustrated.

  • The existing raised pavement marker, however, have some limitations. Most of them are square-shaped which makes only forward and backward retro-reflection, their orientation can be easily changed by impact of vehicle, and the surface reflector can be readily contaminated leading poor functioning. In addition, maintenance for broken raised pavement marker is not easy. The purpose of the study is to design and manufacture a new and improved type of raised pavement marker. The new raised pavement marker has round-shaped upper structure. Its body was separated from the holder and the reflector was surrounded by acrylic cover. We tested performances of the constituent parts, optimum load after installation, and reflection efficiency. The new raised pavement marker will be an initiation of studies on the improvement of the shape and performance of raised pavement markers.

  • We improved an efficiency of fiber-optic current transformer by using a metal-coated sensor coil. To reduce the linear birefringence, we used a length of spun fiber as sensor coil, and then used a flint glass fiber coil for comparison. To make the sensor coil in the reflection type, we used different reflection mirrors at the end of the sensor coil, such as a Faraday rotator mirror, a simple mirror, a metal-coated fiber end and a simple fiber end. From the experimental results, the linear error of current measurements were less than ${\sim}$ 0.2 % regardless of the mirror types. The metal-coated sensor was the most cost-effective considering the fabrication cost and the simple structure.

  • We carried out an image analysis of living cells forming their contacts at the bottom of the cell culturing substrate. In order to visualize the contact area selectively, we adopted total-internal-reflection-fluorescence (TIRF) method, which can illuminate the specimen volume within only several hundred nano-meters above the substrate. From the fluorescent intensity of the TRF image, we could calculate the distance of the cell surface from the substrate. As a result, we visualized the origin of cell contacts, their movements, and the change of cell-contact type from the close-contact into focal-contact with information of its vertical displacement representing the temporal evolution process of the three-dimensional cell-surface-profile near the contact area during this metamorphosis.

  • We establish the existence of weak solutions in an infinite subsonic channel in the self-similar plane to the two-dimensional Burgers system. We consider a boundary value problem in a fixed domain such that a part of the domain is degenerate, and the system becomes a second order elliptic equation in the channel. The problem is motivated by the study of the weak shock reflection problem and 2-D Riemann problems. The two-dimensional Burgers system is obtained through an asymptotic reduction of the 2-D full Euler equations to study weak shock reflection by a ramp.

  • An approach of decomposing the reflecting components is proposed by using the mild-slope equation of hyperbolic type which has the similar form to the shallow water equations. The approach is verified on Booij's problem and sinusoidally varying ripples. Inclusion of higher-order bottom effect given by chamberlain and Porter(1995) yields even more satisfactory results than the Berkhoff's mild-slope equation when compared with finite element solution or experiments.
