  • When houses or buildings are adjacent to roads, with no effective prevention of road traffic noise, neighbors are exposed to it. It is important to understand the properties of sound propagation before taking a countermeasure against road traffic noise. It is easy to estimate the properties of sound propagation without obstacles, but very difficult and complex to estimate them with ones. The purpose of this study is to present a useful tool that can estimate the properties of sound propagation. In the beginning of this study, we investigated the attenuation of road traffic noise with two pillar buildings, and presented practical approximate calculation method, and verified that through scale model. The outcomes from this study are as follows : (1) Over second reflection sound waves can be ignored. (2) Diffraction sound waves that happen when reflection sound and first diffraction wave are projected at the wedge of other building can be ignored.

  • High-resolution S-wave reflection surveying has been successfully conducted on paved areas using a Land Streamer originally designed by the author. The main feature of the Land Streamer tool is the non-stretch woven belt on which geophone units are mounted to form a multichannel geophone array similar to a marine streamer. Because it is easily towed by a vehicle or by hand, the tool leads to high performance in field measurements and resultant cost-effectiveness of high-resolution reflection surveys. Although each geophone unit is coupled to the pavement through a metallic baseplate instead of being firmly planted in the ground, the Land Streamer tool provides comparatively clean data, unaffected by traffic noise even on the pavement. Thus, the tool is capable of expanding the opportunity for S-wave reflection surveys in urban areas where many surfaces are paved and traffic noise is severe. A series of high-resolution S-wave reflection surveys on paved areas delineated detailed structures of surface layers shallower than 60 m, and proved the wide applicability of the tool to engineering, environmental applications, and earthquake disaster prevention projects.

  • With rapid urbanization, the volume of traffic in urban area has been significantly increased. This in turn led to problem which can be described as Road Traffic Noise. Currently, to alleviate the road traffic noise damage, a demand for installation of soundproofing walls is rising. Among different shapes of soundproof walls being installed, the reflection-type acoustical insulation panel is highly drawing attentions of residents due to the fact that it does not obstruct their field of vision in contrast with the opaque acoustical insulation panel. On the other hand, improving the soundproofing wall of the reflection-type acoustical insulation barrier panel needs to be focused on since it has a possibility to cause a secondary damage by reflected sounds. Therefore, in this research, study has been carried out to improve the forms in order to minimize travelling of reflected sounds through changing the frontal surface shape and geometrical shape of the reflection-type soundproofing panel. A result from comparison between the normal reflection-type soundproofing panel and the improved soundproofing panel, with reduction effects in the noise reflection, showed that the curved type of soundproofing panel has an impact on reducing the noise up to 1.5 dB. Furthermore, from the research conducted, it appears that the increase and decrease in the reflected sounds can be changeable depending on various design factors. Thus, it turns out that the study shows a potential possibility to develop a reduction technology of the reflected sounds pertaining to overall condition on the soundproofing walls.

  • This paper studied the efficient noise prediction method for new apartment house near the road traffic noise. Three noise prediction software were compared by each prediction noise level using the simple model which is included the road, soundproofing wall and building. Two foreign national calculation models(RLS-90 and NMPB) were verified by comparison of measured sound level. Frequency of sound level was predicted by NMPB and compared by measured data. The sphere of noise source and facade reflection were proposed to accurate predict the road traffic noise in new apartment house.

  • A method using beamforming algorithm has been developed to measure oblique incidence reflection coefficients of sound absorption materials. MUSIC(Multiple Signal Classification) method detects the angles of incidence and reflection. By separating the incident and reflected waves using beamforming method, the reflection coefficient is calculated. Spatial smoothing technique is also used to reduce the coherence between the incident and reflected waves. The test materials were modeled as a locally reacting surface. Numerical and experiment results are performed to verify the acuracy of proposed method.

  • The objective of this paper is to perform measurements of power transmission and reflection coefficients in a coupled plate. The coupled plate has been divided into 2 subsystems. The out-of-plane vibration has been only considered with assumption of relatively small in-plane vibration. The coupling loss factors have been measured with consideration of the power balance condition. The power transmission and reflection coefficients has been estimated from the measured values of the coupling loss factors. The measured power transmission and reflection coefficients have been compared with the corresponding theoretical coefficients in a semi-infinite coupled plate.

  • We discuss two possible optical noise sources in an electro-optic camera loaded on a low earth orbit satellite. The first noise source was a reflection at the window for signal rays incident upon the window which is placed before the FPA plane. The second noise source came from a reflection at the surface of the FPA cell when the signal flux is not entirely absorbed. We investigate the noise generation processes for two optical noise sources, and a parametric solution is used to estimate the optical noise effects.

  • FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar system is widely used in autonomous driving and navigation applications due to its high detection capabilities independent of weather conditions and environments. However, radar signals can be easily contaminated by various noises such as speckle noise, receiver saturation, and multipath reflection, which can worsen sensing performance. To handle this problem, we propose a learning-free noise removal technique for radar to enhance detection performance. The proposed method leverages adaptive thresholding to remove speckle noise and receiver saturation, and wavelet transform to detect multipath reflection. After noise removal, the radar image is reconstructed with the geometric structure of the surrounding environments. We verify that our method effectively eliminated noise and can be applied to autonomous driving by improving the accuracy of odometry and place recognition.

  • In this study. the acoustic power balancing method to analysis HVAC system noise is presented. The method can consider not only forward but also backward propagations of noise generated by the operation of air supply units and aerodynamical disturbance at duct elements. This can be done by estimating sound transmission and reflection properties of duct elements. and balancing acoustic powers of total HVAC system. To verify the accuracy of the presented method. numerical analysis for a HVAC system is carried out and the results are compared with those obtained by a traditional empirical method. suggested by National Environmental Balancing Bureau.
