  • The intension of this study is to produce ordinary portland cement using ash, both bottom ash and fly ash, obtained from municipal solid waste incineration ash (MSWI). We used limestone, waste molding sand, shale, slag from converting furnaces and fly ash as main raw materials and mixed them, setting the lime saturation factor (LSF) within 91.0, the silica modulus (SM) within 2.40, and iron modulus (IM) within 1.80. We conducted tests adding bottom ash alone 1, 2 and 3% by weight, respectively, and a mixture of bottom ash 0.9% and fly ash 0.1 % by weight. The result of analysis on clinker shows that the more ash is added, the lower the burnability index (B.I.) falls, lowering the mineral evolution of calcium silicate accordingly. From the measurement of compressive strength we have learned that the more ash is used, the lower the strength becomes.

  • The adsorption features of nickel ion in wastewater on manganese dioxide from spent batteries were investigated for its usage as an adsorbent. The aquatic behavior of nickel ion was characterized by MINTEQ program and the considered influential variables on the adsorption of nickel ion were its initial concentration, reaction temperature, the amount of adsorbent, and pH. The adsorption ratio of nickel ion decreased with increasing its initial concentration and thermodynamic estimation has been carried out based on the adsorption characteristics of nickel ion depending on temperature. In addition, the adsorption of nickel ion was shown to be promoted according to the amount of manganese dioxide and a lot of nickel ions were adsorbed as the solution pH was raised.

  • $MoO_3$ powders were reduced to $MoO_2$ under Ar+$H_2$ gas mixture in a tubular furnace at temperature range 723~873 K. Reaction rate was quantitatively deduced by measuring relative humidity of off gas. Observed reaction rate increased significantly with hydrogen partial pressure and reaction temperature and the rate of $H_2O$ evolution increased drastically during the initial period of reduction. As reduction proceeded, however, $H_2O$ partial pressure decreased noticeably. During the initial period of the reduction, a linear relationship for time dependence of the reduction fraction was observed. The activation energy for the reduction of $MoO_3$ to $MoO_2$was 73.56 kJ/mol during the initial period of reduction.

  • The recovery of molybdenum and vanadium from acid leaching solutions of spent catalysts using solvent extraction has been investigated. Among various acid leaching solutions, sulfuric acid solution is found to be adequate for the recovery of these two metals. The extraction and stripping behavior of the two metals in the absence and presence of other impurity metals by various types of extractants such as cationic, solvating, amine and a mixture of cationic and solvating extractants was discussed. Each type of extractants has advantage and disadvantage in terms of the possibility of separation and of forming a third phase. Among the various types of extractants, a mixture of cationic and solvating extractants seems to be the most promising extractant system for the separation of Mo and V from the acid leaching solutions of spent catalysts.

  • Spray dried $Cr_2O_3$ powder having an agglomerated structure of particles was twice treated into a plasma flame to increase its apparent density. The powder subjected to the first densification treatment did not show the entirely melted state keeping inner particle hollows, and it was fully melted after the second processing only. The powder size as a result of the second treatment decreased, and the apparent density as well as flowability were increased due to melting and surface smoothing effects. But a part of particles after the second densified treatment showed the hollow structure, especially those which were above $30{\mu}m$ in size. This densification behavior of the powder has been qualitatively discussed in terms of the thermal conductivity and inner gas pressure within aggregates exposed to the plasma flame.

  • A cyclone type electrolytic method was used to recover silver from thiourea-hydrochloric acid mixed solutions. The electrowinning behavior of silver was investigated in different systems, such as the flow rate, current density, silver concentration, thiourea concentration and hydrochloric acid concentration. As the increase of the flow rate, current density and hydrochloric acid concentration, the recovery rate of silver was increased. Whereas, as the increase of silver concentration, the recovery rate of silver was decreased. The thiourea concentration did not affect the Ag recovery and current efficiency. Above 99% of Ag was recovered at the flow rate of 12 L/min., current density of $0.75A/dm^2$, silver concentration of 1.0 g/L, 0.5 M thiourea and 0.1 M hydrochloric acid. In most experimental conditions, silver was recovered as a powder form.

  • Separation of Co and Ni over Mg from the sulfuric acid solutions using Cyanex272, PC88A and Versatic acid 10 as an extractant was carried out. From the comparative studies about the extraction behavior of Co, Ni and Mg, Versatic acid 10 was superior to Cyanex272 and PC88A for the selective extraction of cobalt and nickel from the mixed solutions. About 98% of Ni and Co were extracted at equilibrium pH 7.0 and less than 5% of Mg was co-extracted by Versatic acid 10. McCabe-Thiele diagram indicated two stages requirement for Co and Ni extraction by 10% Versatic acid 10 at pH 7.0 and phase ratio (A/O) of 2.0. The loaded Co and Ni in organic phase was stripped effectively the sulfuric acid concentration above 70 g/L. 99.78% of cobalt and 98.42% of nickel were stripped.

  • In order to develop a process for the recovery of valuable metals from spent LiBs, solvent extraction experiments were performed to separate Cu(II) and/or Co(II) from synthetic hydrochloric acid solutions containing Li(I), Mn(II), and Ni(II). Commercial amines (Alamine 336 and Aliquat 336) were employed and the extraction behavior of the metals was investigated as a function of the concentration of HCl and extractants. The results indicate that HCl concentration affected remarkably the extraction efficiency of the metals. Only Cu(II) was selectively at 1 M HCl concentration, while both Co(II) and Cu(II) was extracted by the amines when HCl concentration was higher than 5 M, leaving the other metal ions in the raffinate. Therefore, it was possible to selectively extract either Cu(II) or Co(II)/Cu(II) by adjusting the HCl concentration.

  • In this study, the depression behavior of zinc sulfate on the sphalerite with the addition of potassium butyl xanthate was investigated to clear the relationship between zinc sulfate and xanthate in depression of sphalerite. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the depress effect of zinc sulfate on the sphalerite declined with the increase of its addition amount. From the results of SEM-EDS and FT-IR analysis, it was found out that the amorphous precipitate of metal xanthate (Zn-BX) was formed in sphalerite concentrate, when the solubility product of [Zn+]·[BX] in the pulp solution exceeded 3.71×10-11, which is the solubility of Zn-butyl xanthate. It is considered that the Zn-butyl xanthate had a negative effect on the depression of sphalerite.

  • Reduction smelting of spent lithium-ion batteries at high temperature produces metallic alloys. Following solvent extraction of the leaching solutions of these metallic alloys with either sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, the raffinate is found to contain Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), and Si(IV). In this study, two cationic exchange resins (Diphonix and P204) were employed to investigate the loading behavior of these ions from synthetic sulfate and chloride solutions. Experimental results showed that Ni(II), Co(II), and Mn(II) could be selectively loaded onto the Diphonix resin from a sulfate solution of pH 3.0. With a chloride solution of pH 6.0, Mn(II) was selectively loaded onto the P204 resin, leaving Ni(II) and Si(IV) in the effluent. Elution experiments with H2SO4 and/or HCl resulted in the complete recovery of metal ions from the loaded resin.
