  • Pressure tubes are major component of nuclear reactor, but only selected samples are periodically examined due to numerous numbers of tubes. Current in-service inspection result show there is high probability of flaw existence at uninspected pressure tube. Probabilistic analysis is applied in this study for the integrity assessment of uninspected pressure tube. All the current integrity evaluations procedures are based on conventional deterministic approaches. So it is expected that the results obtained are too conservative to perform a rational evaluation of lifetime. More realistic failure criteria, based on FAD are also proposed for the probabilistic analysis. As a result of this study failure probabilities for various conditions are calculated, and examined application of FAD and LBB concept.

  • Heat release characteristics of live fire load are an important parameter for performance oriented fire safety design of a building. While investigations have been carried out on the fire load and its burning behavior in office, residential and commercial buildings and so on, little effort has been paid for the rational treatment of fire load in post office buildings in Japan. In this report, burning behavior of typical combustible objects in post office buildings are studied by measuring heat release rates of plastic palettes with and without postal envelopes or packages and special containers loading numbers of palettes. The test results suggest that dynamic heat release rate is highly dependent on the condition of palettes especially if they load appropriate amount of postal envelopes or not.

  • In tropical geometry, the sum of two numbers is defined as the minimum, and the multiplication as the sum. As a way to build tropical plane curves, we could use Newton polygons or amoebas. We study one method to convert the representation of an algebraic variety from an image of a rational map to the zero set of some multivariate polynomials. Mikhalkin proved that complex curves can be replaced by tropical curves, and induced a combination formula which counts the number of tropical curves in complex projective plane. In this paper, we present close examinations of this particular combination formula.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the engineering characteristics of the R.C circular ring sector plate with various boundary conditions and then to propose a rational and paraical method for application of finite element method to R.C structures. The stiffness matrix of the circular ring sector plate was obtained by using the multi-base coordinate system in which the base-coordinate systems were constructed for each nodal point of the quadrilateral element in order to reflect the complicated boundary conditions conveniently and correctly. The R.C element stiffness matrix was constructed by adding the stiffness coefficients of the steel-bar element into the plate bending element stiffness matrix. Herein, the steel-bar element was treated as the common beam element. Using the above method, the effects of steel-bar can be considered without increasing of the numbers of element and nodal points.

  • An experimental investigation is reported on the heat transfer coefficient from a rotating flat plate in a round turbulent normally impinging water jet. Tests were conducted over a range of jet flow rates, rotational speeds, jet radial posetions with various combinations of three jet nozzle diameter. Dimensionless correlation of average Nusselt number for laminar and turbulent flow is given in terms of jet and rotational Reynolds numbers, dimensionless jet radial position. We suggested various effective promotion methods according to heat transfer characteristics and aspects. The data presented herein will serve as a first step toward providing the information necessary to optimize in rational manner the cooling requirement of impingement cooled rotating machine components.

  • Research in undergraduate mathematics education has been active very recently. The purpose of the paper is to investigate how college students make ion from some known informations about integer and rational numbers in algebra. Three college students were involved in the study. We analyze student's personal answers in order to find where their misunderstandings and difficulties come from based on the theoretical frameworks on mathematical understanding such as APOS-model and P-K-model. Finally we discuss about constructivist teaching ways for algebra and propose new paradigm for teaching undergraduate mathematics.

  • It is well known that the denominator of the Dedekind sum s(c, d) divides 2 gcd(d, 3)d and that no smaller denominator independent of c can be expected. In contrast, here we prove that we usually get a smaller denominator in S(H, d), the sum of the s(c, d)'s over all the c's in a subgroup H of order n > 1 in the multiplicative group $(\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z})^*$. First, we prove that for p > 3 a prime, the sum 2S(H, p) is a rational integer of the same parity as (p-1)/2. We give an application of this result to upper bounds on relative class numbers of imaginary abelian number fields of prime conductor. Finally, we give a general result on the denominator of S(H, d) for non necessarily prime d's. We show that its denominator is a divisor of some explicit divisor of 2d gcd(d, 3).

  • Let ℤ and ℚ be the ring of integers and the field of rational numbers, respectively. Let h(ℤ, ℚ) be the ring of composite Hurwitz polynomials. In this paper, we study the factorization of composite Hurwitz polynomials in h(ℤ, ℚ). We show that every nonzero nonunit element of h(ℤ, ℚ) is a finite *-product of quasi-primary elements and irreducible elements of h(ℤ, ℚ). By using a relation between usual polynomials in ℚ[x] and composite Hurwitz polynomials in h(ℤ, ℚ), we also give a necessary and sufficient condition for composite Hurwitz polynomials of degree ≤ 3 in h(ℤ, ℚ) to be irreducible.

  • Improving the plant protection system against unforeseen changes/transients during operation is essential to maintain plant safety. Under this condition, it requires rapid and accurate signal processing. The use of an Intellectual Property (IP) core for floating point calculations for Safety Critical MMIS can make numerical computations easier and more precise, improving system accuracy. It can represent and manipulate rational numbers as well as a much broader range of values with dynamic range in nuclear power plant. Systems engineering approach (SE) is used through the development process, it helps to reduce complexity and avoid omissions and invalid assumptions as delivers a better understanding of the stakeholders needs. For the implementation on the FPGA target board, the 32-bit floating-point arithmetic with IEEE-754 standards has designed using Simulink model in Matlab for all operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and VHDL code generated.

  • Let Fn be the Farey sequence of order n. For S ⊆ Fn, let 𝓠(S) be the set of rational numbers x/y with x, y ∈ S, x ≤ y and y ≠ 0. Recently, Wang found all subsets S of Fn with |S| = n + 1 for which 𝓠(S) ⊆ Fn. Motivated by this work, we try to determine the structure of S ⊆ Fn such that |S| = n and 𝓠(S) ⊆ Fn. In this paper, we determine all sets S ⊆ Fn satisfying these conditions for n ∈ {p, 2p}, where p is prime.
