Most frequency domain-based approaches assume that structural response should be a Gaussian random process. But a lot of non-Gaussian processes caused by multi-excitation and non-linearity in structural responses or load itself are observed in many real engineering problems. In this study, the effect of non-Normality on fatigue damages are discussed through case study. The accuracy of four frequency domain methods for non-Gaussian processes are compared in the case study. Power-law and Hermite models which are derived for non-Gaussian narrow-banded process tend to estimate fatigue damages less accurate than time domain results in small kurtosis and in case of large kurtosis they give conservative results. Weibull model seems to give conservative results in all environmental conditions considered. Among the four methods, Benascuitti-Tovo model for non-Gaussian process gives the best results in case study. This study could serve as background material for understanding the effect of non-normality on fatigue damages.
This study aimed to develop a method for the determination of the damaged story in reinforced concrete (RC) structure with ambient vibrations, based on modified jerk energy methodology. The damage was taken as a localized reduction in the stiffness of the structural member. For loading, random white noise excitation was used, and dynamic responses from the finite element model (FEM) of 4 story RC shear frame were extracted at nodal points. The data thus obtained from the structure was used in the damage detection and localization algorithm. In the structure, two damage configurations have been introduced. In the first configuration, damage to the structure was artificially caused by a local reduction in the modulus of elasticity. In the second configuration, the damage was caused, using the Elcentro1940 and Kashmir2005 earthquakes in real-time history. The damage was successfully detected if the frequency drop was greater than 5% and the mode shape correlation remained less than 0.8. The results of the damage were also compared to the performance criteria developed in the Seismostruct software. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm has effectively detected the existence of the damage and can locate the damaged story for multiple damage scenarios in the RC structure.

This study presents a probabilistic time series forecast of ship structural response using Bayesian inference combined with Volterra linear model. The structural response of a ship exposed to irregular wave excitation was represented by a linear Volterra model and unknown uncertainties were taken care by probability distribution of time series. To achieve the goal, Volterra series of first order was expanded to a linear combination of Laguerre functions and the probability distribution of Laguerre coefficients is estimated using the prepared data by treating Laguerre coefficients as random variables. In order to check the validity of the proposed methodology, it was applied to a linear oscillator model containing damping uncertainties, and also applied to model test data obtained by segmented hull model of 400,000 DWT VLOC as a practical problem.

Impact damper is a passive damping system that controls undesirable vibration with mass block impacting with stops fixed to the excited structure, introducing momentum exchange and energy dissipation. However, harmful momentum exchange may occur in the random excitation increasing structural response. Based on the mechanism of impact damping system, a semi-active impact damper (SAID) with controllable impact timing as well as a semi-active control strategy is proposed to enhance the seismic performance of engineering structures in this paper. Comparative experimental studies were conducted to investigate the damping performances of the passive impact damper and SAID. The extreme working conditions for SAID were also discussed and approaches to enhance the damping effect under high-intensity excitations were proposed. A numerical simulation model of SAID attached to a frame structure was established to further explore the damping mechanism. The experimental and numerical results show that the SAID has better control effect than the traditional passive impact damper and can effectively broaden the damping frequency band. The parametric studies illustrate the mass ratio and impact damping ratio of SAID can significantly influence the vibration control effect by affecting the impact force.

The allowed operation space for the mass damper in an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) system is limited for most civil structures. In this study, a restrained stroke active tuned mass damper (RS-ATMD) system with a end-spring and a holder that reduces the stroke of the mass damper with maintaining the control effect durably is proposed. This new control system functions as a conventional ATMD within the predetermined stroke limitation under small excitation and as an RS-ATMD beyond that limitation under large excitation. A new control algorithm considering such an operation principle of the RS-ATMD are also provided. Parameteric study for the various design factors of the RS-ATMD is conducted and the control effectiveness are investigated in comparison with the ATMD. Exposed to sinusoidal or impact load, the RS-ATMD system shows the considerable reduction of the maximum stroke of the mass damper with the slight diminution in the control effectiveness. Excited by random load, it also shows the considerable reduction of the maximum stroke of the mass damper not allowing the diminution in the control effectiveness.
In comparison with the existing static reliability analysis methods, the dynamic reliability analysis(DyRA) method is more suitable for estimating the failure probability of a structure subjected to earthquake excitations because it can take into account the frequency characteristics and damping capacity of the structure. However, the DyRA is known to have an issue of numerical stability due to the uncertainty in random sampling of the earthquake excitations. In order to solve this numerical stability issue in the DyRA approach, this study proposed two earthquake-scale factors. The first factor is defined as the ratio of the first earthquake excitation over the maximum value of the remaining excitations, and the second factor is defined as the condition number of the matrix consisting of the earthquake excitations. Then, we have performed parametric studies of two factors on numerical stability of the DyRA method. In illustrative example, it was clearly confirmed that the two factors can be used to verify the numerical stability of the proposed DyRA method. However, there exists a difference between the two factors. The first factor showed some overlapping region between the stable results and the unstable results so that it requires some additional reliability analysis to guarantee the stability of the DyRA method. On the contrary, the second factor clearly distinguished the stable and unstable results of the DyRA method without any overlapping region. Therefore, the second factor can be said to be better than the first factor as the criterion to determine whether or not the proposed DyRA method guarantees its numerical stability. In addition, the accuracy of the numerical analysis results of the proposed DyRA has been verified in comparison with those of the existing first-order reliability method(FORM), Monte Carlo simulation(MCS) method and subset simulation method(SSM). The comparative results confirmed that the proposed DyRA method can provide accurate and reliable estimation of the structural failure probability while maintaining the superior numerical efficiency over the existing methods.

Due to the random nature of earthquake, the definition of the input excitation is one of the major uncertainties in the seismic response analysis. Furthermore, ground motions that correspond to a limited number of design parameters are not unique. Consequently, a brood range of response values can be obtained even with a set of motions, which match the same target parameters. The paper presents a practical probabilistic approach that can be used to systematically model the stochastic nature of seismic loading. The new approach is based on energy-based RMS hazard and takes account for the uncertainties of key ground motion parameters. The simulations indicate that the new RMS procedure is particularly useful for the rigorous probabilistic seismic response analysis, since the procedure is suitable for generation of large number of hazard-compatible motions, unlike the conventional procedure that aim to generate a small number of motions.
In this paper, we define "presence" as a physiological and emotional feeling which feels that he or she is immerged in a specific artworks when he/she is very interested in the artwork. To measure the presence, we use a combined approach of subjective survey and brain signals (EEG). Subjective survey includes PQS (presence questionnaire survey) and IDQS (individual differences questionnaire survey). We experimented with 30 random populations, and we performed Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ test to verify the validity of the survey results. We also cross-checked the survey with EEG test for the populations. From our experimentation, we conclude that opponent color (e.g. yellow and blue) makes strong excitation on presence. In this paper, we believe that there are strong presence even in the abstract images, and it can be stronger than photo-realistic images if we well-design color, forms on the artwork.

This paper deals with analysis and real-time Implementation of a wide band adaptive multirate speech codec (AMR-WB) using a fixed-point DSP of TI's TMS320C6201. In the AMR-WB codec, input speech is divided into two frequency bands, lower and upper bands, and processed independently. The lower band signal is encoded based on the ACELP algorithm and the upper band signal is processed using the random excitation with a linear prediction synthesis filter. The implemented AMR-WB system used 218 kbytes of program memory and 92 kbytes of data memory. And its proper operation was confirmed by comparing a decoded speech signal sample-by-sample with that of PC-based simulation. Maximum required time of 5 75 ms for processing a frame of 20 ms of speech validates real-time operation of the Implemented system.
While there exists a relatively large body of technical information for the engineered design of wood-frame buildings to resist seismic ground motions, the quantitative assessment of seismic resistance of conventional houses built by prescriptive requirements is less well understood. Forintek Canada Corp., in collaboration with other research and industry partners, has embarked on a research project to address this topic. This paper will report on the seismic shake table tests of a full-scale wood-frame building. The two-story specimen, $6m{\times}6m$ in plan, was built on the seismic shake table at Tongji University in Shanghai, China, according to Part 9 of the 1995 National Building Code of Canada and shaken uni-directionally in each of the two principal directions. Three different seismic table motions were applied at increasing peak ground motion amplitudes up to 0.40 and 0.50 g. The specimen was repaired after the above sets of seismic table motions, and successive runs were conducted for increased door openings. Measurements included specimen accelerations, displacements and anchorage forces. Static stiffness of the specimen was measured at low force levels, and natural frequencies were measured after each seismic loading stage by applying low-level random excitation. The results presented consist of the capacity spectra of the shake table tests, changes in specimen stiffness and natural frequencies with increasing seismic loading. These results and those from other recent shake table tests elsewhere will be compared with simplified engineering calculations based on codified values of strength, and on that basis preliminary conclusions will be drawn on the adequacy of the current code provisions and design guides in Canada and the USA for conventional wood-frame construction.
