  • Gwangdong Dam Watershed is affected by the increased discharge caused by the melting snow in the spring season. Therefore, simulation results obtained using hydrologic models have generally been inaccurate in relation to discharge without snow pack and melt modules. In this research, a grid based distributed rainfall runoff model (K-DRUM) was developed using a snow pack and melt module, and has been applied in the Gwangdong Dam Watershed to simulate the discharge for a four year period. A previous version of K-DRUM, which does not include a snow pack or melt module, was used to calculate the discharge in order to compare the snow melt effect. The simulation period lasted about 7 months from October of the previous year to April of this year using hourly precipitation and weather observed data. To evaluate the model performance, NSE, PBIAS and RSR statistics techniques were applied using the simulation results of the discharge. From the results of reliability evaluation, the K-DRUM model, which uses a snow pack and melt module, had a good applicability for the runoff simulation considering the snow melt effect in the spring.

  • An adaptive algorithm was applied to forecast daily stream flows in real time using rainfall data. A three-component tank model was selected to simulate the flows and its time-variant parameters were self-calibrated with updated data using a parameter optimization scheme, golden section search method. The resulting adaptive model, APTANK, was applied to six watersheds, ranging from 0.47 to 33.62 km$^2$ size and the simulated daily streamflows were compared with the measured. The simulation results were in good agreement with the field data. APTANK is found to be applied to real-time flow simulation purposes such as a tool for irrigation water resources management and operations. The model is particularly good to simulate streamflows on dry days as compared to wet days having runoff-induced precipitation.

  • In this paper distributed models for simulating spatially and temporally varied moving storm in a watershed were developed. The complete simulation in a watershed is achieved through two sequential flow simulations which are overland flow simulation and channel network flow simulation. Two dimensional continuity equation and momentum equation of kinematic approximation were used in the overland flow simulation. On the other hand, in the channel network simulation two types of governing equations which are one dimensional continuity and momentum equations between two adjacent sections in a channel, and continuity and energy equations at a channel junction were applied. The finite difference formulations were used in the channel network model. Macks Creek Experimental Watershed in Idaho, USA was selected as a target watershed and the moving storm on August 23, 1965, which continued from 3:30 P.M. to 5:30 P.M., was utilized. The rainfall intensity fo the moving storm in the watershed was temporally varied and the storm was continuously moved from one place to the other place in a watershed. Furthermore, runoff parameters, which are soil types, vegetation coverages, overland plane slopes, channel bed slopes and so on, are spatially varied. The good agreement between the hydrograph simulated using distributed models and the hydrograph observed by ARS are Shown. Also, the conservations of mass between upstreams and downstreams at channel junctions are well indicated and the wpatial and temporal vaiability in a watershed is well simulated using suggested distributed models.

  • As the impermeable area increases due to urbanization and industrialization, the influence of non-point pollutants caused by rainfall runoff on the water system is increasing. In the past, the best management practices(BMP) were used a lot to manage non-point pollutants, but recently, technology that naturally treats them through LID (Low Impact Development) technology is widely used. In this study, various rainfall events were simulated through the SWMM model based on the data of rainfall monitoring in bioretention among natural facilities. The characteristic of LID modeling research is that it is difficult to build accurate modeling data with short-term data because real data is the result obtained through natural facilities, and it is difficult to implement an accurate model. In this study, the data monitored for 3 years It is significant in that it has built a precise model. The actual data monitored a total of 18 times was simulated, and the inflow and outflow and the removal efficiency of five pollutants were simulated. As a result of performing the performance evaluation, most of the 7 items showed excellent indicators, and the TN and TP showed relatively low simulation performance. In the future, it is expected that Korea will introduce an integrated water management system in which the water supply system and the sewage system are substantially integrated and operated. Therefore, the results of this study are considered to play an important role in the initial stage of rainfall management in the future integrated water management system, and the extent of rainfall runoff reduction and pollutant reduction in the expected installation area can be predicted in advance. This is expected to prevent overdesign of bioretention.

  • In this study, we developed the GIS-based Geomorpho-hydrological Watershed Modeling System($G^{2}WMS$) which could consider both nonlilear rainfall-runoff relationship based on Geomorpho-Climatic Unit Hydrograph(GCUH) as well as watershed system inducing river routing. The developed new model was calibrated at the gaged rainfall events at natural watersheds and previewed to apply at the ungaged mountain basins, such as Sulma basin for small mountain basin and Andong-Dam basin for large scale basin, compared single with partitioned basin in the observed unit hydrographs and rainfall-discharge events. Finally, at the large scale Andong dam basin, we concluded that partitioned basin cases which including th nonlinear GCUH and river routing methods were superior to single basins which including the traditional methods in rainfall-discharge simulation at the mountain basins.

  • The TANK model has been widely used in rainfall-runoff modeling due to its simplicity of concept and computation while achieving forecast accuracy. A major barrier to the model application is to determine parameter values for ungauged watersheds, leading to the need of a method for the parameter estimation. The objective of this study was to develop regression equations for estimating the 3th TANK model parameters considering their variations for the ungauged watersheds. Thirty watersheds of dam sites and stream stations were selected for this study. A genetic algorithm was used to optimize TANK model parameters. Watershed characteristics used in this study include land use percent, watershed area, watershed length, and watershed average slope. Generalized equations were derived by correlating to the optimized parameters and the watershed characteristics. The results showed that the TANK model, with the parameters determined by the developed regression equations, performed reasonably with 0.60 to 0.85 of Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency for daily runoff. The developed regression equations for the TANK model can be applied for the runoff simulation particularly for the ungauged watersheds, which is common for upstream of agricultural reservoirs in Korea.

  • In this study, the LIDMOD3 was developed to design and evaluate low impact development (LIDMOD). In the same fashion, the LIDMOD3 employs a curve number (NRCS-CN) method to estimate the surface runoff, infiltration and event mean concentration as applicable to pollutant loads which are based on a daily time step. In these terms, the LIDMOD3 can consider a hydrologic soil group for each land use type LID-BMP, and the applied removal efficiency of the surface runoff and pollutant loads by virtue of the stored capacity, which was calculated by analyzing the recorded water balance. As a result of Model development, the LIDMOD3 is based on an Excel spread sheet and consists of 8 sheets of information data, including: General information, Annual precipitation, Land use, Drainage area, LID-BMPs, Cals-cap, Parameters, and the Results. In addition, the LIDMOD3 can estimate the annual hydrology and annual pollutant loads including surface runoff and infiltration, the LID efficiency of the estimated surface runoff for a design rainfall event, and an analysis of the peak flow and time to peak using a unit hydrolograph for pre-development, post-development without LID, and as calculated with LID. As a result of the model application as applied to an apartment, the LIDMOD3 can estimate LID-BMPs considering a well spatical distributed hydroloic soil group as realized on land use and with the LID-BMPs. Essentially, the LIDMOD3 is a screen level and simple model which is easy to use because it is an Excel based model, as are most parameters in the database. This system can be expected to be widely used at the LID site to collect data within various programmable model parameters for the processing of a detail LID model simulation.

  • SWAT model is applied to simulate rainfall-runoff and pollutant loadings in the Nakdong River basin as the condition for extreme droughts and floods. The year 1994 and 2002 are chosen as the drought and flood year, respectively, through the analysis of past rainfall data for 30 years. The simulation results show decreases in both runoff and pollutant loadings for the drought year but increases for the flood year. However, the pollutant loadings on some upper sub-basins increase for drought year due to highly-regulated dam discharge and soil moisture change. Collectively, extreme droughts and floods have negative impacts on water quality, showing elevated SS loadings during wet season and concentrated T-P concentrations during low flow season. The extent of these impacts is highly influenced by antecedent dry days and precipitation patterns.

  • The stream morphological characteristics of a watershed play a significant role in the analysis of rainfall-runoff relations in a river basin and a quantitative description of these characteristics is essential for determining the appropriate values of physical parameters of a watershed which usually are input data for rainfall-runoff simulation models. In this study the stream morphological characteristics of the Gab River basin, which is one of the three major tributaries of Geum River, was determined quantitatively by the Horton-Strahler's method. The result showed that the Gab River System was developed very closely to the patterns generally described by the laws of Horton. The basic relations concerning the morphological characteristics deriveed in this study are the relations of stream length, and average stream slope, the stream length-drainage area relation, relative height-relative drainage area relation, and the relation between the proportional stream order and drainage area. No correlation analysis was possible between the morphological parameters and the streamflow due to non-existence of the stage gauging stations on the Gab River System.
