  • Landslides induced by heavy rainfall from typhoon 'Rusa' in 2002 and typhoon 'Meami' in 2003 were investigated at Samcheok area, and the relationship between landslides and rainfall on that area was analyzed. The average annual rainfall at Samcheok area is generally $1,200mm\~1,300mm$. However, the average annual rainfall at samcheok for 2003 and ton was increased more than 2,000mm because of typhoon 'Rusa' and typhoon 'Meami'. The number of landslides and the landslides area are largely occurred in a area of the relatively high maximum hourly rainfall and 2days cumulative rainfall. Therefore, it confirmed that landslides are directly depended on the hourly rainfall and the cumulative rainfall. The landslides at Samcheok area induced by heavy rainfall due to typhoon are more influenced by the maximum hourly rainfall at the landslide occurrence day. In order to predict a rational landslide size, a new method included the maximum hourly rainfall and the landslide area in a traditional way was proposed. As the result of applying the new proposed method, the landslide size at Samcheok area is involved in the large scale landslide.

  • In this study, we propose rainfall frequency criteria for the development of early-warning system based on the evaluation of the highway debris flow that includes the contents of the rainfall recurrence cycle. The rainfall criterion was recommended based on the results of previous researches and the recommended rainfall criterion was 1 hour, 6 hours, and 3 days. At this time, the study subjects were located in Gangwon area and the probability rainfall of 8 stations in Gangwon area was collected. Also, the probabilistic distribution of the 1 hour, 6 hour, and 3 day rainfall criteria to be used for the early warning for the highway debris flow in Kangwon area was estimated through the probability analysis. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between 3 types of rainfall criteria selected from the rainfall data and the actual destructive damages of debris flow at 12 points in 7 lines of Gangwon highways. At this time, the rainfall criterion on the probability distribution was divided into an average value and a lower limit value. As a result of the review, it was found that the case of using the lower limit value of the rainfall according to the recurrence intervalwell simulates the situation of actual debris flow hazards.

  • Low impact development (LID) is a widely used technology that aims to reduce the peak flow volume and amount of pollutants in stormwater runoff while introducing physicochemical, biological or a combination of both mechanisms in order to improve water quality. This research aimed to determine the effect of hydrologic factors in removing the pollutants on stormwater runoff by an LID facility. Monitored storm events from 2010-2018 were analysed to evaluate the hydraulic and hydrological performance of a small constructed wetland (SCW). Standard methods for the examination water and wastewater were employed to assess the water quality of the collected samples (APHA et al, 1992). Primary hydrologic data were obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration. The recorded average rainfall intensity and antecedent dry days (ADD) of SCW were 5.26 mm/hr and 7 days respectively. During the highest rainfall event (27 mm/hr), the removal efficiency of SCW for all the pollutants was ranging from 67% to 91%. While on the lowest rainfall event (0.7 mm/hr), the removal efficiency was ranging from -36% to 62%. Rainfall intensity has a significant effect to the removal efficiencies of each facility due to its dilution factor. In addition to that, there was no significant correlation of ADD to the mean concentrations of pollutants. Generally, stormwater runoff contains significant amount of pollutants that can cause harmful effects to the environment if not treated. Also, the component of this LID facility such as pre-treatment zone, media filters and vegetation contributed to the effectivity of the LID facilities in reducing the amounts of pollutants present in stormwater runof.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of stormwater runoff by rainfall type in orchard areas and transportation areas for 2 years(2010~2011year). Effluents were monitored to calculate the Event Mean Concentrations(EMCs) and runoff loads of each pollutant. The pollutant EMCs by volume of stormwater runoff showed the ranges of BOD 0.9~13.6 mg/L, COD 13.7~45.2 mg/L, SS 4.1~236.4 mg/L, T-N 2.123~21.111 mg/L, T-P 0.495~2.214 mg/L in the orchard areas, and was calculated as BOD 2.3~22.5mg/L, COD 4.4~91.1 mg/L, SS 4.3~138.3 mg/L, T-N 0.700~13.500 mg/L, T-P 0.082~1.345 mg/L in the transportation areas. The correlation coefficient of determination in the orchard area was investigated in the order of Total Rainfall(0.81) > Total Runoff(0.76) > Rainfall Intensity(0.56) > Rainfall Duration(0.46) > Antecedent Dry Days(0.27). Also, in the case of the transportation area was investigated in the order of Total Rainfall (0.55) > Total Runoff(0.54) > Rainfall Intensity(0.53) > Rainfall Duration(0.24) > Antecedent Dry Days(0.14). As the result, comparing valuables relating to runoff of non-pollutant source between orchard areas and transportation areas, orchard area($R^2{\geq}0.5$ : X3, X4, X5) was investigated to have more influence of diverse independent valuables compared to the transportation area($R^2{\geq}0.5$ : X3, X4) and the difference of discharge influence factor by the land characteristics appeared apparently.

  • This research was to elucidate the generation method of daily precipitation data from monthly data. We applied a combined method of Markov chain and gamma distribution function using 4 specific parameters of ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, p(W/W) and p(W/D) for generation of daily rainfall data using daily precipitation data for the past 30 years which were collected from the country's 23 meteorological offices. Four parameters, applied to use for the combination method, were calculated by maximum likelihood method in location of 23 sites. There are high correlations of 0.99, 0.98 and 0.98 in rainfall days, rainfall probability and mean amount of daily rainfall between measured and simulated data in case of those parameters. In case of using parameters estimated from monthly precipitation, correlation coefficients in rainfall days, rainfall probability and mean amount of daily rainfall are 0.84, 0.83 and 0.96, respectively. We concluded that a combination method with parameter estimation from monthly precipitation data can be applied, in practical purpose such as assessment of climate change in agriculture and water resources, to get daily precipitation data in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of rainfall after cutting on nutritive value of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) hay. Fresh Italian ryegrass was treated with 3 days natural rainfall (56.5, 14.0 and 1.6 mm) after cutting without tedding. Rainfall effect on Italian ryegrass quality was evaluated based on Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), crude ash (CA) and non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC). The quality of Italian ryegrass was decreased with extending raining days. The content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) was increased from 0.4 to 4.7% by 1 day advancement in raining. CF content was decreased from 8.1 to 32.8%. CP and CA contents did not change, but NFC content was decreased from 0.5 to 8.4%. The quality damage by the number of raining days after cutting Italian ryegrass was the lowest on the first day from exposure to rain.

  • The Two-fluid Model, proposed by Herman and Prigogine in 1979, is a macroscopic model for describing network operability in urban networks. Since the Two-fluid Model parameters change according to the traffic flow characteristics, it is necessary to identify the cause of flow change when analyzing the operability using the parameters. This study compared the crash risk according to rainfall using the Two-fluid Model parameters, and explained that the driving behavior affects the operability of the urban network. The results of the parameters estimation showed poor network operation under rainfall condition. The factors of drivers' crash risk perception model were calculated, and driving behavior was analyzed due to crash risk according to rainfall. In both the morning and evening, drivers tended to slow down their speeds to reduce the crash risk, because the risk on rainy days could be high when the speed was the same as on a sunny days. However, the crash risk was still higher on rainy days than sunny. In the future, it is necessary to analyze the relationship between the network operation and the crash risk in various networks and to improve both.

  • This article summarizes our research on estimation of area-specific and time-adjusted rainfall rates during 2004KEOP (Korea enhanced observation period: June 1, $2004{\sim}$ August 31, 2004). The rainfall rate is defined as the proportion of rainfall days per week and areas are consisting of Haenam, Yeosu, Janghung, Heuksando, Gwangju, Mokpo, Jindo, and Wando. Our objectives are to analyze periodicity in area-specific precipitation and the meteorological measures and investigate the relationships between the geographic pattern of the rainfall rates and the corresponding pattern in potential explanatory covariates such as temperature, wind, wind direction, pressure, and humidity. A generalized linear model is introduced to implement the objectives and the patterns are estimated by considering a set of rainfall rates produced using samples from the posterior distribution of the population rainfall rates.

  • A silica mine monitoring was conducted from March to December in 2008 to measure rainfall, runoff amounts and pollution loads. A total of 13 rainfall-runoff events were measured and analyzed with respect to runoff ratio, pollutant concentration and load, and initial flush. Over rainfall-runoff events, 95% confidence range of SS concentration was 942.5~2,056.2 mg/L. Other measured water quality indices also showed relatively large variation. This wide concentration variation was thought to be caused by the bare working ground of the mine that was used to store, process and transport the mined silica. Total pollution load of the 13 rainfall-runoff events was SS 17,901 kg/ha, $COD_{Cr}$ 160.9 kg/ha, $COD_{Mn}$ 111.24 kg/ha, BOD 79.6 kg/ha, T-N 13.8 kg/ha, T-P 3.5 kg/ha, and TOC 39.3 kg/ha. Initial flush was not well observed except SS. Very high SS concentration and load was occurred when rainfall was large. Therefore, it was recommended to manage the bare ground not to discharge excessive pollutants during wet days by covering the ground or constructing runoff treatment systems such as a sediment basin.

  • This paper is the results of analysis for the causes and characteristics of landslide according to heavy rain occurred in west area of Gangwon province which is affected by typhoon such as Ewiniar and Bilis in 2006. West side of Gangwon province is topographically weak for the landslide and debris flow since it is covered by soil of weathered rock such as Gneiss and Granite. From the results of analysis for the rainfall characteristics, it was found that landslide occurrence is closely related to the accumulated rainfall amount less than 3 days. Furthermore, it was found that regional difference of occurrence frequency is effected by 1-hour maximum rainfall intensity. From the results of analysis for the landslide data of 860 locations occurred in west side, it was shown that failure mode was changed from transition slide to liquidity slide. Occurrence frequency was high at the slope angle of $20{\sim}30^{\circ}$ slope length of 11~20, and slope width of 6~10. Landslide of west side is the typical landslide of Gneiss and Granite and the type of small scale which has narrow slope width.
