An acoustic finite element model of a bridge is developed to evaluate the noise generated by the traffic-induced vibration of the bridge. The dynamic response of a multi-girder bridge, modeled by a 3-dimensional frame element model, is analyzed with a 3-axle(8DOF) truck model and a 5-axle(l3DOF) semi-trailer. The flat plate element is used to analyze the acoustic pressure due to the fluid-structure interactions between the vibrating surface and contiguous acoustic fluid medium. The radiation fields of noise with a specified distribution of vibrating velocity and pressure on the structural surface are also computed using the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral. In an attempt to illustrate the influence of the structural vibration noise of a bridge to total noise level around the bridge, the random function is used to generate the vehicle noise source including the engine noise and the rolling noise interacting between the road and tire. Among the diverse parameters affecting the dynamic response of bridge, the vehicle velocity, the vehicle weight, the spatial distribution of the road surface roughness, the stiffness degradation of the bridge and the variation of the air temperature changing the air density are found to be the main factors that increase the level of vibration noise. Consequently, The amplification rate of noise increases with the traveling speed and the vehicle weight.
Background: Dual-energy X-ray images (DEI) can distinguish or improve materials of interest in a two-dimensional radiographic image, by combining two images obtained from separate low and high energies. The concepts of DEI performance describing the performance of double-exposure DEI systems in the Fourier domain been previously introduced, however, the performance of double-exposure DEI itself in terms of various parameters, has not been reported. Materials and Methods: To investigate the DEI performance, signal-difference-to-noise ratio, modulation transfer function, noise power spectrum, and noise equivalent quanta were used. Low- and high-energy were 60 and 130 kVp with 0.01-0.09 mGy, respectively. The energy-separation filter material and its thicknesses were tin (Sn) and 0.0-1.0 mm, respectively. Noise-reduction (NR) filtering used the Gaussian-filter NR, median-filter NR, and anti-correlated NR. Results and Discussion: DEI performance was affected by Sn-filter thickness, weighting factor, and dose allocation. All NR filtering successfully reduced noise, when compared with the dual-energy (DE) images without any NR filtering. Conclusion: The results indicated the significance of investigating, and evaluating suitable DEI performance, for DE images in chest radiography applications. Additionally, all the NR filtering methods were effective at reducing noise in the resultant DE images.

In this paper, radiation efficiency of the plate surround by an infinite rigid baffle is studied. The plate is simply supported and one side is in contact with air, while other side with water. The pressure and normal velocity over the plate surface are assumed as modal summations, from which a set of linear equations is obtained for fluid-structure coupled problem. It is shown that neglect of the cross modes results in overestimation of the radiation efficiency specifically for mid-frequency ranges. Based on the fact that the responses are mainly determined from the first few cross modes in addition to the diagonal terms, a new algorithm is proposed, where banded matrix is iteratively solved in computing radiation efficiency. In numerical examples, it is found that radiation efficiency obtained from banded matrix is in excellent agreement with the one from the full matrix, while computing time is significantly reduced. It is also found that as frequency grows larger, radiation efficiency considering only diagonal terms is a good approximation.
Background: X-ray imaging detectors for the nondestructive cargo container inspection using MeV-energy X-rays should accurately portray the internal structure of the irradiated container. Internal and external factors can cause noise, affecting image quality, and scattered radiation is the greatest source of noise. To obtain a high-performance transmission image, the influence of scattered radiation must be minimized, and this can be accomplished through several methods. The scatter rejection method using an anti-scatter grid is the preferred method to reduce the impact of scattered radiation. In this paper, we present an evaluation the characteristics of the signal and noise according to physical and material changes in the anti-scatter grid of the imaging detector used in cargo container scanners. Materials and Methods: We evaluated the characteristics of the signal and noise according to changes in the grid ratio and the material of the anti-scatter grid in an X-ray image detector using MCNP6. The grid was composed of iron, lead, or tungsten, and the grid ratio was set to 2.5, 12.5, 25, or 37.5. X-ray spectrum sources for simulation were generated by 6- and 9-MeV electron impacts on the tungsten target using MCNP6. The object in the simulation was designed using metallic material of various thicknesses inside the steel container. Using the results of the computational simulation, we calculated the change in the scatter-to-primary ratio and the signal-to-noise ratio improvement factor according to the grid ratio and the grid material, respectively. Results and Discussion: Changing the grid ratios of the anti-scatter grid and the grid material decreased the scatter linearly, affecting the signal-to-noise ratio. Conclusion: The grid ratio and material of the anti-scatter grid affected the response characteristics of a container scanner using high-energy X-rays, but to a minimal extent; thus, it may not be practically effective to incorporate anti-scatter grids into container scanners.

Loading noise generated by steady aerodynamic force exerted on the rotating body surface is theoretically analyzed and its radiation characteristics is examined as a fundamental research of helicopter rotor noise. For simplicity, the force exerted on each blade is not distributed but concentrated at one point and the noise is evaluated by using Lowson' exact formula with a discussion of the physical meaning of each term in the formula. For a single point force rotating with various angular frequencies, we investigated the radiation characteristics and theoretically explained the physical behavior at near and far-field. By investigating the amplitude of acoustic pressure with various distances, we observed the different decreasing ratio at near- and far-field with the discussion of the effect of acceleration of angular frequency. Finally, the phenomenon that the noise level is reduced everywhere as the number of blade increases is explained with the suggestion of a noise reduction idea, the limitations of this study, and the future research topics.

Purpose: This study automatically discriminates homogeneous and structure edge regions on computed tomography (CT) images, and it evaluates the noise level and edge preservation ratio (EPR) according to the different types of iterative reconstruction (IR). Methods: The dataset consisted of CT scans of 10 patients reconstructed with filtered back projection (FBP), statistical IR (iDose4), and iterative model-based reconstruction (IMR). Using the 10th and 85th percentiles of the structure coherence feature, homogeneous and structure edge regions were localized. The noise level was estimated using the averages of the standard deviations for five regions of interests (ROIs), and the EPR was calculated as the ratio of standard deviations between homogeneous and structural edge regions on subtraction CT between the FBP and IR. Results: The noise levels were 20.86±1.77 Hounsfield unit (HU), 13.50±1.14 HU, and 7.70±0.46 HU for FBP, iDose4, and IMR, respectively, which indicates that iDose4 and IMR could achieve noise reductions of approximately 35.17% and 62.97%, respectively. The EPR had values of 1.14±0.48 and 1.22±0.51 for iDose4 and IMR, respectively. Conclusions: The iDose4 and IMR algorithms can effectively reduce noise levels while maintaining the anatomical structure. This study suggested automated evaluation measurements of noise levels and EPRs, which are important aspects in CT image quality with patients' cases of FBP, iDose4, and IMR. We expect that the inclusion of other important image quality indices with a greater number of patients' cases will enable the establishment of integrated platforms for monitoring both CT image quality and radiation dose.

By applying an ergonomically developed Bismuth shield to the endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysm the radiation dose of the scalp and lens from the medical radiation exposure was reduced. The enrtance surface dose was analyzed by measuring the occipital parts, bilateral temporal parts, bilateral quadriceps, and nasal tip of the developed bismuth shield using a photostimulable fluorescence dosimeter before (Group A) before use (Group B). Signal to noise ratio (SNR) and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) analysis were used to evaluate the image quality when Bismuth shielding was used. The mean entrance surface dose of A group and B group was 26.92% lower than that of A group. The analysis of CNR and SNR was the same for both Roadmap and DSA. The use of Bismuth shielding is an alternative that can reduce the radiation impairment due to temporary hair loss and other stochastic effects that may occur after cerebrovascular intervention.
The noise sources of a tip-jet driven rotor can be separated by rotor blade noise and jet noise. The rotor blade noise consists of thickness noise, loading noise, nonlinear quadrupole noise, and jet noise is divided into nozzle momentum noise and jet radiation noise. The flow analysis for the prediction of rotor blade noise is performed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis, and the noise source of the rotor blade noise is identified by simultaneously applying the permeable and impermeable surface based FW-H (Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings) acoustic analogy. The nozzle momentum noise is obtained by permeable surface FW-H, and jet radiation noise is predicted by using empirical method for the fixed-wing jet. Both of jet noises use nozzle exit condition for noise analysis. The accuracy of the technique is verified based on the noise measurements of the tip-jet driven rotor, and the unique noise characteristics of the tip-jet driven rotor is confirmed by spectrum analysis.

A theoretical model has been studied to describe the sound radiation analysis for structure vibration noise of vehicle tires under the action of random moving line forces. When a tire is analyzed, it had been modeled as curved beams with distributed springs and dash pots that represent the radial , tangential stiffness and damping of tire, respectively. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the curved beam is taken into account. The curved beam is assumed to occupy the plane y=0 and to be axially infinite. The curved beam material and elastic foundation are assumed to be lossless Bernoulli-Euler beam theory including a tension force, damping coefficient and stiffness of foundation will be employed. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and the results examined as a function of Mach number, wave-number ratio and stiffness factor. The experimental investigation for structure vibration noise of vehicle tire under the action of random moving line forces has been made. Based on the Spatial Transformation of Sound Field techniques, the sound power and sound radiation are measured. Results strongly suggest that operation condition in the tire material properties and design factors of the tire govern the sound power and sound radiation characteristics.
Under the time-varying temperature, the high-temperature radiation of forgings and the change of reflection characteristics of oxide skin on the surface of forgings lead to the difficulty of obtaining images to truly reflect the geometric characteristics of forgings. It is urgent to study the clear and reliable acquisition method of hot forging feature image under time-varying temperature to meet the requirements of visual measurement of hot geometric parameters of forgings. Based on this, this chapter first puts forward the quality evaluation method of forging feature image, which provides guarantee for the accurate evaluation of feature image quality. Furthermore, the factors that affect the image quality, such as the radiation characteristics of forgings and the photographic characteristics of cameras, are analyzed, and the imaging spectrum which can effectively suppress the radiation intensity of forgings is determined. Finally, aiming at the problem that the quality of image acquisition is difficult to guarantee due to the drastic change of radiation intensity of forgings under time-varying temperature, an image acquisition method based on minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based laser light intensity adaptation is proposed, which significantly improves the definition of feature light strips in forging images at high temperature, and finally realizes the clear acquisition of feature images of large-scale hot forging under time-varying temperature.
