  • The difference in leaf bud flushing times of Quercus species and their hybrids was compared among the trees from natural forest, seedlings from natural pollination and artificial crossing. In the natural forest of the Hiruzen experimental forest of Tottori University, Japan, Quercus species flushed in the order of Q. crispula > Q. anguste-lepidota > Q. takatorensis ${\fallingdotseq}$ Q. serrate > Q. dentata. The flushing time of seedlings from natural pollination was in the order of Q. aliena ${\fallingdotseq}$ Q. crispula > Q. angustelepidota > Q. takatorensis ${\fallingdotseq}$ Q. serrate > Q. dentata. The flushing times of $F_1$ hybrids by artificial crossing were between those of parental species. From the result of interspecific hybridization, it is shown that the earliness of flushing in Quercus species is a genetic character considered hereditable to progenies.

  • The present study has been designed to define the effects of photosynthetically active radiation, leaf temperature, and water stress on photosynthesis and respiration of leaves of four oak species (Quercus mongolica, Quercus aliens, Quercus variabilis, and Quercus serrate). The results obtained are as follows : 1. The estimated light compensation points at which Pn approached zero were 38, 24, 20, and $18{\mu}Em^{-2}s^{-1}$ for Q. aliens, Q. variabilis, Q, mongolica, and Q. serrate, respectively. The light saturation points occurred at $500{\mu}Em^{-2}s^{-1}$ in three oak species except Q, aliens. 2. The maximum rates of Pn were 19.7, 15.2, 11.2, and 11.0 mg $CO_2$ $dm^{-2}h^{-1}$ for Q. variabilis, Q. serrate, Q. monglica, and Q. aliens leaves, respectively. 3. The transpiration rates of Q. variabilis and Q. serrate leaves were slightly higher than those of Q. mongolica and Q. aliens leaves at various photosynthetically active radiations(PAR), but cuticular transpiration rates at dark were similar in four oak species. 4. The optimum photosynthesis occurred at $25^{\circ}C$ in Q. aliens, Q. variabilis, and Q. serrate leaves, but $20^{\circ}C$ in Q. mongolica leaves. In four oak species, the net photosynthesis approached zero at about $40^{\circ}C$. 5. The dark respiration rates of leaves exhibited the following ranking of species : Q, variabilis > Q. mongolica > Q. aliens > Q. serrate. 6. The maximum productive efficiency (Pg/Rd) of leaves occurred highest in Q, serrate at $20^{\circ}C$, then in Q. mongolica at $20^{\circ}C$, then in Q, aliens at $25^{\circ}C$, and finally in Q. variabilis at $15^{\circ}C$. 7. The decrease of net photosynthesis in Q. serrate began at about -1.2 MPa, and then approached zero at -2.9 MPa of leaf water potential. The decrease of net photosynthesis began at 3% of water loss, and then approached zero at 17.5% of water loss. 8. As indicated by tissue-water relations parameters, it may be suggested that Q. aliens and Q. variabilis are more tolerant and favored on xeric forest soils than Q. mongolica and Q. serrate.

  • For the establishment of district planning in natural parks, vegetationin the most significant point. Consequently, district plan should be made basically under phytosociological investigations. The purpose of this paper is to conserve vegetation in the district planning at natural park(Nam Han San Sung provincial natural park). The result of vegetation survey are as follows : As an actual vegetation 13 communities are recognized. Those are Quercus mongolica-Carpinus laxiflora community, Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron schlippenbachii community, Quercus serrate community, Betula platyphylla var. Japonica community, Quercus dentata community, Quercus mongolica-Pnuus densiflora community, Quercus acutissima community, Robinia pseudo-acacia community, Alnus hirsuta community, Castanea crenata community, Quercus variabilis community, Pinus densiflora community, Pinus rigida community, weed community on cultivated land(Form land), Larix leptolepis reforested land, cut over area and non-vegetation area. The grade of vegetation naturalness was divided into five degrees by characteristics of actual vegetation. I intended to make zoning plan for protection of vegetation with a special attention to the grade of vegetation naturalness and I discussed the necessity of the improvement of existing district plan. District plan was proposed as Fig. 5.

  • Four kinds of leaves with different shapes of leaf blade were used as experimental materials to establish an optimum condition for treating leaves to obtain skeleton leaves. Effective concentration and length of soaking time in a hot NaOH solution, which resulted in high valued ornaments, were 60% (v/v) for 50 minutes for Acer buergerianum (palmatifid), 20% (v/v) for 50 minutes for Ilex cornuta (serrate), 20-60% (v/v) for 70 minutes for Quercus mongolia (lobed), and 20-40% (v/v) for 70 minutes for Quercus palustris (parted). Through a series of the process of soaking leaves in a hot NaOH solution, rinsing or brushing to remove mesophyll, drying, and dying, high quality ornaments could be obtained.

  • The potential natural vegetation of Naejangsan national park area, southwestern Korea, was inferred from the actual vegetation. With the phytosociological classification, ordinatins and field surveys, the actual vegetation map of the area was made in scale 1:25, 000, including ten communities of Pinus densiflora, quercus mongolica, Quercus variabilis, Carpinus laxiflora, Daphnipyllum macropodum, Carpinus tschonoskii, Quercus aliena-Carpinus tschonoskii, Cornus controversa-Lindera erythrocarpa, Torreya mucifera-Zelkova serrate and Acer mono-Zelkova serrata community. The analyses of species richness, age structure and various informations on vegetation changes suggest the three pathways of late stage succession from P. densiflora forest to climatic climax. The first of them is through Q. variabilis forest to Q. monogolica forest in the upper parts of the mountain, the second through Q. variabilis and Q. serrata forest to C. laxiflora forest in the middle parts and the third through Q. aliena forest to C. tschonoskii forest in lower parts. Considering the actual vegetation and informations on the vegetation changes including human activities, the potential natural vegetation of the mountain mainly composed of Q. monogolica, C. laxiflora, C. tschonoskii, P. densiflora and Z. serrata forest as climatic climax and/or edaphic climax was inferred. The present situration of nature conservation in the area was estimated by the examination on the actual vegetation and potential natural vegetation map.

  • This study was subjected to compare seasonal changes of survival rate, relative growth rate, and chlorophyll contents of major oak tree species including Quercus acctissima, Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata, Quercus varibilis seedlings grown in Quercus acctissima forest under different light intensities. Three light intensities were 81% of sunlight, 34% of sunlight and 21% of sunlight. In each treatment, 100 tree seedlings were planted and survival rate, growth rate, and chlorophyll contents were measured. The highest survival rate was Quercus acctissima in 73% seedlings compared with those subjected to the other tree seedlings in 45~66%. Lowest survival rate was Quercus vnriabilis seedlings in 41%. Oaks tree species of the height, the root collar diameters of the relative growth were better in the seedlings grown in 81% light intensities of full sun. But growth rates decreased rapidly in the shade treatment of 21% light intensities of full sun. Lowest chlorophyll contents(chlorophyll a, b and total) were shown at 21% light intensities of full sun, lowest light intensity treatment in this study This result is thought growth and chlorophyll contents associated with light intensity Also, Physiological characteristics has to be investigated in near future because photosynthesis and chlorophyll contents were strongly related to tree growth with long periods.

  • The forest vegetation surrounding Taegu area was investigated by the methodology of the ZM school of phytosociology, from September, 1994 to August, 1997. The forest vegetation was classified into 7 communities, 8 subcommunities and 5 afforestations as follows : Quercus mongolica community (Typical subcommunity, Carex siderosticta subcommunity), Quercus variabilis community, Quercus acutissima community, Quercus dentate community, Carpinus cordata-Acer mono community (Typical subcommunity, Quercus serrata subcommunity, Cornus controversa subcommunity), Pinus densiflora community (Typical subcommunity, Sanguisorba officinalis subcommunity, Rhododendron schlippenbachii subcommunity), Lespedeza maximowiczii-Rhododendron mucronulatum community , Robinia pseudo-acacia afforestation, Pinus rigida afforestation, Larix leptolepis afforestation, Pinus thunbergii afforestation, Pinus koraiensis afforestation. The differential species of the Quercus mongolica community were Quercus mongolica, Athyrium yokoscense, Rhododendron schlippenbachii, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa, Astilbe chinensis var. davidii, Weigela subsessilis, and Melampyrum roseum, those of the Carpinus cordata-Acer mono community were Acer mono, Carpinus cordata, Carpinus laxiflora, and Staphylea bumalda, those of the Pinus densiflora community were Pinus densiflora, Quercus serrata, Cocculus trilobus, and Juniperus rigida. Constance degree of the Quercus serrate was especially high in shrub and herb layers of the Pinus densiflora community. The results of factor analysis by DCA showed that distribution pattern of the communities were similar to that by Z-M method and that communities were arranged according to soil moisture gradient. Rhododendron schlippenbachii subcommunity of the P. densiflora community and the Typical subcommunity of the Q. mongolica community were distributed in similar environments.

  • A phytosociological survey carried out using the Z.-M. School’s methodology and system of numerical-classification analyses, this study sought to classify the syntaxa of forest vegetation on Mt. Byeokbang and to collect basic data on the transitional zones of the southern Korean peninsula’s coastal region. The syntaxa were classified into three physiognomic types and nine communities, including (1) evergreen coniferous forests (Eurya japonica-Pinus thunbergii community and Ardisia japonica-Pinus densiflora community), (2) summer-green, broad-leaved forests (Chloranthus japonicus-Quercus serrate community, Syneilesis palmata-Quercus mongolica community, Quercus acutissima community, Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana community, Fraxinus siebolidiana-Quercus dentate community, and Deutzia glabrata-Lindera erythrocarpa community), and (3) artificial afforestation (Alnus firma afforestation). The Chloranthus japonicus-Quercus serrata community, Syneilesis palmata-Quercus mongolica community, Fraxinus siebolidiana-Quercus dentata community, Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana, community and Deutzia glabrata-Lindera erythrocarpa community were closely evaluated for national vegetation naturalness. It was confirmed that the Carpinus turczaninovii var. coreana community was endemic to Korea. Most syntaxa were defined as a secondary forestation due to various human activities (e.g., forest fires, logging, digging, climbing, etc.). The results of a canonical-correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that human activities, altitude, humus depth, rock cover ratio, slope, etc. were the main ecological factors determining the classified plant communities’ distribution patterns.

  • The Shindae resting place-Jibong valley forest in Tokyusan area was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of slope. Forty eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 750m to 1,247m and part of the slope. Density of trees in tree strata decreased as increasing elevation, and mean DBH of trees in tree strata increased as increasing elevation. With increasing elevation the importance values of Quercus mongolica, Acer mono, Fraxinus mandshurica increased, while those of Quercus serrate, Betula schmidtii decreased. As going from lower part to upper part of the slope, the importance values of Quercus mongolica and Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa increased while those of Cornus controversa and Fruxinus mandshurica decreased. The number of species, species diversity and evenness tended to decreased as increasing elevation. The range of similarity indices between elevation belts, and parts of the slope were 55.3~67.1% and 36.8~71.7%, respectively. According to importance value and cluster analysis, the studied valley forest was classified into four forest communities of Quercu serrata community of lower part of slope of low elevation belt, Quercus mongolica-Quercus serrata community of middle and upper part of slope of low elevation belt, Quercus mongolica-deciduous tree species community of middle and high elevation belt and Quercus mongolica-Rhododendron schzippinbachii community of the top area.
