The morphological characteristics of leaves, trichomes, and acorns in 8- to 11-year-old reciprocal hybrids of Quercus dentata and Q. serrata were investigated. The reciprocal hybrids had obovate to obovateelliptic leaves that were smaller than those of Q. dentata but similar to Q. serrata in their leaf size, obtuse leaf apex, narrow-tipped leaf base, and shape of small to intermediate-sized serrations. The ray length of stellate hairs was intermediate between those of the parents, and the hairs showed dense growth. Long single hairs are present among the stellate hairs on the abaxial side of the leaves. Therefore, the hybrids of Q. dentata and Q. serrata could be identified by the size and shape of leaves, shape of serrations, and type of leaf trichomes.
Objectives : The effects of methanol extracts from the cortex of Quercus dentata Thunb. and Quercus acutissima Carruth, on the activation of macrophage were examined. Methods : Methanol extracts of Quercus dentata (QD) and Quercus acutissima (QA) were applied to cell line RAW264,7 (macrophage), and their effects were examined. Results : 1. Extracts from QD and QA had no specific influence on the cell growth. 2. Extracts from QD and QA did not activate macrophage independently, but the addition of $IFN-{\gamma}$ facilitated the generation of macrophage's nitric oxide(NO). 3. QD and QA extracts increased the manifestation of iNOS gene, when macrophage was activated by $IFN-{\gamma}$. 4. QD and QA extracts increased the manifestation of $TNF-{\alpha}$ in macrophage, which took 2 hours. 5. QD and QA extracts increased the generation of $PGE_2$ in macrophage. Conclusion : QD and QA activate macrophage in the presence of $IFN-{\gamma}$. After activation is primarily facilated by $IFN-{\gamma}$, it works on macrophage secondarily for the manifestation of iNOS gene and for the generation of $TNF-{\alpha}$.
The purpose of this study was a biota research and analysis for Close-to-nature stream restoration planning of Shinchun. The summary of this study is as follows; 1) The vascular plants in research area recorded of 45 species and insect fauna recorded of 34 species of 8 orders. As a result of table of community classification, the communities were two group; Quercus variabilis community(I), Pinus densiflora-Quercus variabilis-Quercus dentata community(II). 2) As a result of analysis on correlation of tree species, the level of significance in positive correlation between Quercus dentata and Corylus heterophyll aindicated 1% and between Pinus densiflora and Lespedeza bicolor also indicated 1%. 3) As a result of DBH analysis, it is expected that Quercus variabilis and Quercus dentata will dominateover other species in competition and its succession continuously maintains from now on in community I. In community II, it is assumed that there is a high possibility of changing into community of Quercus such as Quercus mongolica, Quercus dentata, and Quercus variabilis. 4) As a result of analysis on insect fauna, insect fauna consists of 94% of whole species as 32 species, 23 families, 8 orders. And 7 species, 7 families 4 orders was found in highly urbanized area, the vicinity of Sang-Dong bridge. 5) As mentioned above, Based on A biota fundamental research, Close-to-nature stream restoration planning were full of suggestions: i) Designating ecosystem preservation area, ii) Making Close-to-nature stream revetments, iii) Making pool-and-riffle, vi) Making decks for observation and walks for nature experience, v) Creating wetland biotope. Through these methods, it is necessary to promote bio-diversity and lead people to the space for eco-learning.
Leaves of various, 3 to 5-year-old Quercus hybrids were intermediate in size between their parental species. The petiole length was the smallest in the hybrids of Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. crispula $F_1$ and was intermediate in the hybrids of Q. aliena ${\times}$ Q. serrata $F_1$ and Q. dentata ${\times}$ Q. aliena $F_1$ between their parents. The number of serration in hybrids was close to their mother tree's in most of crossing combinations. The serration depth and the ratio between longitudinal and transverse length of leaves were intermediate between the values of their parental species.
To investigate the vegetation structure of mountain region from Wolgagsan to Dogabjae, 14 plots($2000m^2$) set up with random sampling method were surveyed. Two groups of Quercus variabilis-Pinus densiflora community, Quercus mongolica-Quercus acutissima community were classified by cluster analysis. Quercus variabilis, Pinus densiflora, Quercus mongolica, Quercus acutissima, Quercus dentata and Quercus serrata were found as a major woody plant species in Weolchulsan National Park region. In this area, Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora were dominated partially. In the future, the importance percentage of Pinus densiflora might be decreased, but those of Quercus variabilis, Quercus mongolica, Quercus acutissima and Quercus dentata might be increased. High positive correlations was proved between Quercus variabilis and Pinus rigida; Styrax japonica and Quercus dentata, Quercus acutissima; Pinus rigida and Lindera erythrocarpa, Pinus densiflora; Lindera obtusiloba and Rhododendron mucronulatum; Albizzia julibrissin and Styrax obassia, and relatively high negative correlations was proved between Diospyros kaki and Quercus dentata; Platycarya strobilacea and Lindera erythrocarpa; Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa and Quercus acutissima; Styrax japonica and Styrax obassia; Pinus rigida and Lindera obtusiloba, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Rhododendron mucronulatum; Quercus mongolica and Albizzia julibrissin. Species diversity(H') of investigated groups was ranged $1.2430{\sim}1.2892$.

Browse from Quercus aliena Blume, Quercus mongolica Fisch.. Quercus serrata Thunb., Quercus acutissima Carruth., Quercus variabilies Blume, and Quercus dentata Thunb. were analyzed for crude protein (CP). crude fiber(CF). neutral detergent fiber(NDF). acid detergent fiber(ADF). cellulose. lignin, in vitro dry matter digestibility(DMD), and tannin acid equivalents(TAE). According to the chemical composition and DMD. the total digestible nutrients(TDN). digestible energy(DE), and metabolizable energy(ME) were estimated. Oak browse samples were collected from May through October from 1990 to 1992 in Mt. Kyeryong. Browse from Quercus aliena, Quercus acutissima, and Quercus serrata contained higher levels of CP, DMD. TDN, DE. and ME. but lower levels of CF, NDF. ADF, and TAE as compared with other oak browse. Differences among seasons and years in the concentration of CP. NDF, and organic matter digestibility(0MD) were significantly appeared in all oak browse(P<0.05). The order of preference ratings of oak browse were Quercus aliena ) Quercus acutissima ) Quercus serrata ) Quercus mongollca ) Quercus variabilies ) Quercus dentata. As the results of this study, it could be considered that Quercus aliena and Quercus acutisslma were more valuable browse source than others.
In this study, species resistant to forest fire were extracted from high trees through an investigation of combustion mechanism. Here, the average flameless ignition temperatures of living leaves, branches and barks of oak were respectively, $365^{\circ}C$, $440^{\circ}C$ and $435^{\circ}C$, and the average flameless ignition temperatures of living leaves, branches, barks and cones of pine tree were respectively, $320^{\circ}C$, $405^{\circ}C$, $435^{\circ}C$ and $363^{\circ}C$. It shows that generally, pine tree has a lower flameless ignition temperature than oak and thus, has a relatively high risk of flameless ignition. When comparing risk of fire depending on ignition characteristics, Quercus serrata had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus acutissima and Quercus serrata had a low risk of crown fire, as well. When analysing risk of fire depending on a duration of flame, also, Quercus dentata had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus variabilis Blume had a low risk of crown fire too. Lastly, when comparing risk of fire, according to heat release rates, Quercus acutissima had a low risk of stem fire, and Quercus acutissima and Quercus dentata had a low risk of crown fire, as well. In conclusion, it was observed that as fire-resistant species, Quercus serrata and Quercus dentata have a low risk of ignition, Quercus variabilis Blume has a short duration of flame after discharging ignition when a forest fire occurs, and Quercus acutissima, Pinus Rigida and Antipathes japonica Brook have low heat release rates.
Disclosed is a study related to the thermal characteristics of Pinus densiflora and Quercus dentate identifying the presence of any significant difference in the above trees, which are native to Young Dong Province of Korea, according to different regions of the trees such as branches, barks, living leaves and dead leaves. For this purpose, we have carried out a cone calorimeter test focusing on the variables such as mass loss, heat release, ignition time, flame holding time and concentrations of CO and $CO_2$. The results showed that the total mass loss was greatest in tree branches, whereas the ignition time of dead leaves was fastest both in Pinus densiflora and Quercus dantata. The flame holding times of dead leaves and barks were about $640{\sim}1,016s$ and the total heat release of dead leaves was around 60.1 $MJ/m^2$, twice the total heat release of living leaves. In addition, the maximum exhaust concentrations of CO and $CO_2$ in tree branches of Quercus dentata was 2.82 times higher than those of Pinus densiflora, respectively. From the foregoing, it was confirmed that there exist region-specific differential thermal characteristics in Pinus densiflora and Quercus dentata.

The difference in leaf bud flushing times of Quercus species and their hybrids was compared among the trees from natural forest, seedlings from natural pollination and artificial crossing. In the natural forest of the Hiruzen experimental forest of Tottori University, Japan, Quercus species flushed in the order of Q. crispula > Q. anguste-lepidota > Q. takatorensis ${\fallingdotseq}$ Q. serrate > Q. dentata. The flushing time of seedlings from natural pollination was in the order of Q. aliena ${\fallingdotseq}$ Q. crispula > Q. angustelepidota > Q. takatorensis ${\fallingdotseq}$ Q. serrate > Q. dentata. The flushing times of $F_1$ hybrids by artificial crossing were between those of parental species. From the result of interspecific hybridization, it is shown that the earliness of flushing in Quercus species is a genetic character considered hereditable to progenies.
Fungi of the genus Tuber are ectomycorrhizal fungi that form a symbiotic relationship mainly with oak and hazel trees. Tuber spp. exhibit a highly selective host plant preference; thus, for cultivation purposes it is important to select an appropriate host plant for successful mycorrhization. In addition, as mycorrhizal characteristics differ according to Tuber spp., it is necessary to understand the differences in mycorrhizae according to the fungal species. Tuber huidongense and Tuber himalayense were recently discovered in Korea; therefore, we used spore suspensions from these two species to inoculate two species of oak trees, Quercus acutissima and Quercus dentata, to compare colonization rates and morphologies of the mycorrhizae. The colonization rates demonstrated that the different Tuber spp. favored different host plant species. In addition, unique morphological and anatomical characteristics were observed for T. huidongense and T. himalayense depending on the host species. These findings can lead to new economically important agricultural activities related to truffle cultivation in Korea.
