Sulforphane (SF) is a family of biologically active compound that is distributed widely in broccoli. Although studies in rodents have shown that these compounds are effective and versatile inhibitors of tumorigenesis, the role of dietary SF in protection against human cancers remains to be established. The objective of this study was to explore the quantitative relationship between the dietary intake of cruciferous vegetables and urinary excretion of SF. The effects of dietary broccoli on the body's ability to detoxify were studied in six male subjects between the ages of 22~30 years. Study included administering a glucosinolate-free diet for 8 days (control period). The broccoli diet was further subdivided into two periods; 250 g broccoli was fed per day during the first three days and 500 g broccoli was fed per day during the latter three days. After an 8-day washout period, a second experiment was conducted. The same protocol was used with the exception that uncooked broccoli was consumed. Urinary SF mercapturate was measured to determine the bioavailability of broccoli. The linear trend for mercapturate excretion was dose-dependent, resulting in 3.8- and 1.9-fold increase by the third and six days, respectively, compared to the control. Lower amount of SF-NAC conjugate was detected in cooked broccoli compared to fresh broccoli suggesting cooking may have caused a significant loss in glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables. Therefore, SF can be used as a biomarker for intake of cruciferous vegetables.
Thiamine derivatives of thiamine tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide (TTFD) and thiamine propyl disulfide (TPD) were obtained in a good yield and purity by use of thiothiamine $(SB_1)$ and also described in details for the preparing sodium tetrahydrofurfuryl thiosulphate (Bunte's salt) with and without KI. The optimum reaction conditions for the preparation of TTFD was set in which the Box-Wilson plan was applied. The reaction conditions are as follows; 1. pH value of aqueous solution of thiol type of $B_1{\cdot}HCl;12.09$ 2. Quantity of Bunte's salt (to $B_1{\cdot}HCl\;20G$); 35.01g 3. Reaction temperature; $15.59^{\circ}C$ Studies on ultraviolet absorption were made at various pH and showed that the absorption maxima are shifted with change of pH. The absorption maxima are at $244{\sim}246nm,\;234{\sim}235nm$ in TTFD, and $245{\sim}246nm,\;233{\sim}235nm$ in TPD. The structure was proved by the infrared spectral evidence. Quantitative determination was studied.

The studies were carried out to find the cause and the quantitative evaluation of sea dike materials loss which is occured during the period of construction works for the tideland reclamation projects on the west coast of Korea. Major subjects to studies were to establish the typical relationships between the tidal flow and the movement of dike materials, the tidal-flow and the erosion, the dike materials and the ratio of material movement(losses), construction methods and the ratio of materials movement (losses). Based on the above subjects, the studies were made for the purpose of obtain the following informations; (1) Collecting and evaluaing the data of dike material losses due to foundation settlement, from designed existing dikes on the west coast. (2) By the field investigation at A-San Sea Dike, Pyong Taek Project, the Comparison would be made by the relationships between the tide velocity and the movement of dike foundation under the natural conditions and the period of construction so that find out the relationship between the dike materials of foundation situation and settlements. With regard to the dike construction works, it is so difficult to calculate the exact quantity of material losses due to the foundation settlements. The major factors that affect the settlement losses of the dike materials are: (1) Topographical variation (2) Swepting the sectional area of dike by the tide velocity. (3) Dumping riprap to the outerside of dike during the period of construction works. (4) Sectional area losses by the cause of occurence of the new tide channels. (5) material losses by the heavy storms. (6) Consolidation settlement by the foundation weakness. (7) Material losses by the earth materials by tide flow. Most hi호 material losses were occured by the Consolidation settlement due to the foundation weakness, the maximum tide velocities due to decrease the cross sectional area of the gaps and erosion of foundation due to the range of tide, Inner and outerside of dike, or dike material loses due to the tide flow. Final conclusion would be obtained by the continuous measurement of consolidation settlement at the stage of final clusure of the dike. (It is scheduled to close on the end of 1972) However, intermediate conclusion can be introduced as follows: (1) The estimation of material(losses) during the period of construction works for the existing sea-dikes up to date were only empirical. The material losses at the general closure for design was estimated at 10% of the riprap, 20% of the earth materials, and 20% of the riprap, 40% of the earth materials at the final closure of the dike. The final closure estimated double quantity to the general closure, but it is still doubt. (2) The ratio of consolidation settlements was found smaller than the calculated quantity. It can be foreseen that settlement speeds is higher thom the calculated speeds. (3) The movement of dike foundation under the natural conditions were not so depends on the geological conditions of the foundation. (4) When the tide velocities was estimated 100 at the normal tide, it was estimated 125 at the high tide and 55 at the low tide. The tide velocities at the low tide shows apparently lower than the high tide and the higher velocities at the deep water depth.
Marine traffic management could be defined as the implementation of managerial technical measures to improve vessel traffic safety. The managerial elements of vessel traffic management for ports and harbours or narrow channels include the total amount of traffic control, the vessel traffic separation scheme, speed restriction, traffic control by signals, the navigation information service and so forth. This research aims to quantify how much the traffic separation schemes(TSS) contribute to the alleviation effect of ship handling difficulty and to propose a design standard when the individual management measure is applied in an actual waterway. Traffic separation schemes have now been established in most of the major routes and congested waters of the world, and the number of collisions and groundings have often been dramatically reduced. In this part, the relationship between the alleviation of ship handling difficulty and the reduction of encounter figures among ships is quantitatively clarified by applying the ES model. As results of simulation analysis, it is recognized that a traffic separation system is most effective in the case of narrow width and heavy traffic volume. The centre buoy installation reduces about 1/4 of the alleviation of ship handling difficulty, TSS establishment 1/3, and design change to one-way traffic from two-way traffic reduces 1/2.

The daily fluctuations of occurrence rate and standing stock of zooplankton, the relationship between dry and wet weights of gelatinous zooplankton, and the size distributions of body length and body weight of zooplankton were investigated in the sea around Cheju Island from September 1996 to August 1997. Mean ratios of wet to dry weights were 66.46 (raging from 47.05 to 84.64) in the gelatinous zooplankton and 10.89 (raging 9.21 to 14.85) in the non-gelatinous zooplankton which consisted of crustaceans such as copepods, decapods, mysids, and ostracods etc. Rarios of gelatinous zooplankton to non-gelatinous zooplankton (G/NG) in wet weight was 0.99 (0.28-2.30), indicating high occurrence rate of gelatinous in the study area. The seasonal and diel fluctuations of the gelatinous zooplankton were very large, and G/NG ratios greatly varied with seasons and dat/night cycles. The size distributions of body length of zooplankton (250-500 urn: 35.5% in maximum), and wet (0.1-0.2 mg: 34.4%) and dry weights (0.025-0.05 mg: 44.8%) showed much difference depending composition of the zooplankton groups. These results show that quantitative estimations of zooplankton produc- tivity only based on wet weight should be corrected to better understand and evaluate marine resources in Korean waters.

Information on daily maximum air temperature is important in predicting the status of plants and insects, but the uneven and sparse distribution of weather stations prohibits timely access to the data in regions with complex topography. Since cumulative solar irradiance plays a critical role in determining daily maximum temperature on any sloping surfaces, derivation of a quantitative relationship between cumulative solar irradiance and the resultant daily maximum temperature is a prerequisite to development of such estimation models. Air temperatures at 8 sideslope locations with similar elevation and slope angle but aspect, circumventing a cone-shaped, grass-covered parasitic volcano (c.a., 570 m diameter for the bottom circle and 90m bottom-to-top height), were measured from June to December in 2007. Daily maximum temperatures from each location were compared with the average of 8 locations (assumed to be the temperature measured at a "horizontal reference" position). The temperature deviation at all locations increased with the day of year (or sun elevation) from summer solstice to winter solstice. Averaged over the entire period, the south facing location was warmer by $1^{\circ}C$ in daily maximum temperature than "horizontal reference" and the north facing location was cooler by $0.8^{\circ}C$ than the reference, resulting in the year round average south-north temperature difference of $1.8^{\circ}C$. In November, both south and north facing slopes showed the greatest deviation of $+2.0^{\circ}C$ and $-1.3^{\circ}C$, respectively in daily maximum temperature at monthly scale. On a daily scale, the greatest deviation was +3.8 and $2.7^{\circ}C$ at the south and north slope, respectively. The cumulative solar irradiance (on the slope for 4 hours from 11:00 to 15:00 TST) explained >60% of the variance in daily maximum temperature deviations among 8 locations, suggesting a feasibility of developing an estimation model for daily maximum temperature over complex topography at landscape scales.
This study focused on the material characteristics and archaeometric relationship between the molten glass and bronze materials within the crucibles and gilt-bronze Bodhisattva statue excavated from the Ssangbukri site in Buyeo, Korea. Yellowish green to red brown vitreous material in the crucibles was identified as lead glass which contained scarce amount of BaO, and low $Al_2O_3$ and CaO. Metallic molten material was identified as bronze of copper-tin-lead alloy with low amount of impurities that indicated well-refined materials. Also, cassiterite was used for raw metal ore of tin. The Bodhisattva statue consisted of major copper with trace impurities in the core metal, and gold amalgam in the gilded layer. Though lead isotopic analysis showed contradictory results in each lead glass, bronze and Bodhisattva statue that required further examination, it could be stated that the statue was made in the Ssangbukri site based on the high-level technical skills of bronze production.
The current standard for testing tetrodotoxin (TTX) in foodstuffs is the mouse bioassay (MBA) in Korea as in many other countries. However, this test suffers from potential ethical concerns over the use of live animals. In addition, the mouse bioassay does not test for a specific toxin thus a sample resulting in mouse incapacitation would need further confirmatory testing to determine the exact source toxin (e.g., TTX, STX, brevotoxin, etc.). Furthermore, though the time of death is proportional to toxicity in this assay, the dynamic range for this proportional relationship is small thus many samples must be diluted and new mice be injected to yield a result that falls within the quantitative dynamic range. Therefore, in recent years, there have been many efforts in this field to develop alternative assays. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) has been emerged as one of the most promising options. A LC-MS-MS method involves solid-phase extraction (SPE) and followed by analysis using an electrospray in the positive ionization mode and multiple reactions monitoring (MRM). To adopt LC-MS-MS method as alternative standard for testing TTX, we performed a validation study for the quantification of TTX in puffer fish. This LC-MS-MS method showed good sensitivity as limits of detection (LOD) of $0.03{\sim}0.08{\mu}g/g$ and limits of quantification (LOQ) of $0.10{\sim}0.25{\mu}g/g$. The linearity ($r^2$) of tetrodotoxin were 0.9986~0.9997, the recovery were 80.9~103.0% and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were 4.3~13.0%. The correlation coefficient between the mouse bioassay and LC/MS/MS method was higher than 0.95.
Eight characters namely stalk length of trifoliate, stalk length of terminal leaflets, length of terminal leaflets, width of terminal leaflets, area of terminal leaflets, length of laternalleaflets, width of laternal leaflets, area of laternal leaflets in leaf parts of soybeans were measured to estimate the heritability values in percentage and relationships between those characters. Five parents and six different $_{x}\textrm{F}_2 generations and two backcross generations were used as the materials. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Eight quantitative characters were differ from varieties. and hybrids from different cross combinations. 2. Heritability values of stalk length were showed the lowest, values of leaf length were lower than those of leaf width in both of main leaflets and laternal leaflets, and other values of leaf area in main and laternal leaflets were showed the highest values. 3. It was also recognized that there were close relationships between leaf length and leaf area, leaf width and leaf area in main leaflets and laternal leaflets, and area of main leaflets and laternal leaflets. There was, however, no any relationship between stalk length and other characters, and between length and width of main leaflets and laternal leaflets.
The primary purpose of this study was to gather knowledge about $5^{th},\;6^{th},\;and\;7^{th}$ graders' proportional reasoning ability by investigating their reactions and use of strategies when encounting proportional or nonproportional problems, and then to raise issues concerning instructional methods related to proportion. A descriptive study through pencil-and-paper tests was conducted. The tests consisted of 12 questions, which included 8 proportional questions and 4 nonproportional questions. The following conclusions were drawn from the results obtained in this study. First, for a deeper understanding of the ratio, textbooks should treat numerical comparison problems and qualitative prediction and comparison problems together with missing-value problems. Second, when solving missing-value problems, students correctly answered direct-proportion questions but failed to correctly answer inverse-proportion questions. This result highlights the need for a more intensive curriculum to handle inverse-proportion. In particular, students need to experience inverse-relationships more often. Third, qualitative reasoning tends to be a more general norm than quantitative reasoning. Moreover, the former could be the cornerstone of proportional reasoning, and for this reason, qualitative reasoning should be emphasized before proportional reasoning. Forth, when dealing with nonproportional problems about 34% of students made proportional errors because they focused on numerical structure instead of comprehending the overall relationship. In order to overcome such errors, qualitative reasoning should be emphasized. Before solving proportional problems, students must be enriched by experiences that include dealing with direct and inverse proportion problems as well as nonproportional situational problems. This will result in the ability to accurately recognize a proportional situation.
