Korea is moving toward an aging society faster than the other advance countries such as the U.S. and France. Such aging phenomena are posing greater problems in rural areas than in urban areas, and particularly, decrease in productivity caused by aging population leads to economic difficulties and hinders the improvement of housing life. The purpose of this research is to examine and identify the housing conditions of the vulnerable in rural areas and to present ways to improve the elderly housing and the housing environment in rural areas and to provide basic data for materializing the policies to enhance the quality of life. The results of this research are as follows. First, the elderly in rural areas were found to receive relatively smooth supports for services related to clothing and food through the government and social organizations. But for the housing problems, it was found that there were not any supports. Second, the poor housing environment may cause diseases to the elderly with weak immunity, so ways to remedy these problems are urgently needed. Third, the vulnerable in rural areas can hardly bear the burden of improving the housing environment, so supports from the government and social organizations are needed. Fourth, ways to support the vulnerable such as households receiving basic living subsidies and to support the poor who are not receiving such subsidies should be explored.
The purpose of this study are to evaluate the dwelling quality of rural houses constructed with industrialized wall structures(ALC; Autoclaved Light weight Concrete, SRC; Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete, ST'L; Steel Framed Insulating Panel), and to establish a method of dwelling quality evaluation. The questionnaire survey by mail was done, for investigating the residents' responses to indoor environment, durability, and economic aspect. The respondents are 118 residents living in rural houses constructed with industrialized wall structures. Physical elements of indoor environment(temperature, humidity, air quality, and noise level) were measured in three sample houses, which were selected considering of architectural characteristics. The findings are as follows; 1) As a result of questionnaire survey, residents' responses to dwelling quality are generally positive. 2) As a result of measurement, indoor environments of sample houses are in relatively comfortable condition. 3) As a summary of research, ALC and ST'L are evaluated as recommendable structures for a rural house.
The government is enacted "Housing Performance Grading Indication System" from qualitative housing supply policy and performance of housing under the background of looking for new plan to secure good housing stock and housing performance. This system consists of 5 main performance section, 14 performance categories and 20 detailed performance items. 5 main performance parts are sound insulation related grading(Light-weight impact sound insulation, heavy-weight floor impact sound insulation, noise emission in bathroom, airborne sound insulation for wall between units), Long-life housing related grading(flexibility, remodeling & maintenance, durability), environment related grading(landscape, indoor air quality and ventilation, energy performance), Living environment related grading(common resident facilities such as playground and consideration for the socially underprivileged such as the aged), Fire fire prevention grading(fire fire prevention). The purpose of this research is to analyze characteristics and assessment results of 20 detailed performance items on "Housing Performance Grading Indication System" which was enforced 240 cases from Jan 9th, 2006 to Sep 30th, 2010. The analysis of approval condition of detailed performance items will be important comments for understanding the current domestic level and development of technology.
In the 21st century, universal design has started to expand as new design value system for the diversity and various need of user: a new design that can reflects the welfare of the society. In addition, the percentage of population over 65 years old has been rising rapidly in Korea, and we are expected to reach 'aged society' with 14.3% of elderly population in 2018. In rural districts, population of the elderly has already reached 'super-aged society' with over 20%. With the rapid increase of the number of the elderly, the need for social service system is rising. For the independent living of the elderly, the dwelling space that supports their lifestyle is the most important factor. In advanced countries, they have proposed the housing for the elderly to keep living in their house, improvement of housing quality that fits the changing various needs of them. Until now, however, the most housing condition that the elderly has lived is poor living environment as below housing standards, especially housing in rural districts is very poor. With this, additionally, this study make understood about the necessity and important of universal design housing to reflect the characteristics of rural districts. For this study, data were collected from field survey and interview. The major results showed the following. 1) There were very various type of housing in rural districts. Spatial composition and shape was not related to living behavior and cultural characteristics of rural district. 2) The most new constructed housing was similar to urban housing type. It means that housing with respect to living culture of users in rural district must be developed. 3) In rural housing, they all had outdoor building (included storehouse, bathroom/toilet, kitchenet, etc.) relating to a series of work behavior. However, living environment was not to meet needs and characteristics of users.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present policy implications by analyzing the residential environment in North Korea under the Kim Jong-un regime. Research design, data, and methodology: Residential environment analysis was reviewed by dividing it into physical, socio-cultural, economic, environmental, and policy aspects. Results: Pyongyang are considerably superior due to it being the residence of the country's leadership and middle class. Secondly, there is a concerning problem with the provision of substandard housing. Construction materials are in short supply, and unreasonable timelines often lead to uninhabitable houses, signaling a need for assistance in housing construction. Thirdly, there is a severe lack of essential residential infrastructure, such as reliable electricity and clean water supply, which significantly impacts the quality of life. Lastly, due to the country's economic hardships, basic housing rights are not guaranteed, leading to deplorable living conditions for many North Koreans. The report suggests that these issues should be addressed through international aid to guarantee the basic human rights of North Koreans. Conclusions: In North Korea, the poor living environment deteriorates the health and quality of life of citizens and adversely affects social and economic development. Therefore, international support and cooperation to improve the living environment of North Koreans is important.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outdoor environmental quality level at the improvement areas of residence and examine the changes of these areas where the improvement process has been performed. The indicators of outdoor space were examined for case study and several improvement areas were selected and analyzed in terms of these indicators. The improvement areas may be divided into two branch, one is a housing improvement area and the other is a multi-family housing area. The results of this study were as follows; 1) Land-use intensity in both cases was much higher than before. 2) Open space ratio in the housing improvement areas was not enough but in the multi-family housing areas was enough. 3) The road ratio in both cases was much higher. 4) Parking space was not enough to accomodate all the cars in projects. 5) Public facilities and green space did not exist in housing improvement areas but existed a little in multi-family housing areas. In order to improve the environmental quality level, the proper residential density such as dwelling density, open space ratio, land-use intensity should be planned in advance.
In foreign countries, the use of containers has already been stabilized with their advantages utilized in various forms. Containers are also utilized in Korea as various forms of architecture, but domestic container buildings have poor public consciousness so as to be limitedly utilized as temporary structures based on economic efficiency. Besides, there is the lack of research and development on them. Particularly, despite the advantages of containers as housing facilities, the use of containers as short- or middle-term temporary housing is limited and does not spread. Also, compared to general housing, containers have lower quality of physical environment and even frequently bring about negligent accidents such as fire and electric shock. Thus, this study intends to identify the actual condition of using container houses, the problems in using them, and the direction of improving their residential environment. For this purpose, it analyzes the present condition and characteristics of domestic container housing, and derives conclusions from the focus group interview with 23 residents who have lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do for over a year about such survey items as daylighting, ventilation, privacy condition, water service and sewerage, insulation, soundproofing, view, and room scale.
The movements to improve rural housing environments have been promoted since the beginning of Sae-Mauel project in 1970s. Since then policies to develop village units and to improve housing units and public facilities have been increased. These trends reflect rural inhabitants' strong desire to enjoy a quality of life. The project of Munhwa-Mauel aims to improve rural housing environment conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry since the early 1990s. As of 1998, among 105 districts under the project. 56 districts have been parceled out and sold. The number of Munhwa-Mauels is expected to increase under Government's policy to construct 772 Munhwa-Mauels by the year 2004, which may have a large influences on private sectors. So far several studies have been conducted on the Munhwa-Mauel project. According to them Munhwa-Mauel has merits such that it modernizes the rural villages, and decreases the number of people moving out. while it causes conflict between the residents and the newcomers. Munhwa-Mauel also provides uniform housing layouts and unsuitable environments for the rural area, and lacks locality and facilities to promote income. As, however, the results of previous studies have not been verified through systematic researches, it is necessary to search a verified approach through the evaluation on housing environment in various aspects in order to provide planning guidelines for rural villages.
