  • Phase noise performance and current consumption of Radio Frequency (RF) Voltage-Controlled Oscillator (VCO) are largely dependent on the Quality (Q) factor of inductor-capacitor (LC) tank. Because the Q-factor of LC tank is determined by on-chip spiral inductor, we designed, analyzed, and modeled on-chip differential inductor to enhance differential Q-factor, reduce current consumption and save silicon area. The simulated inductance is 3.3 nH and Q-factor is 15 at 2 GHz. Self-resonance frequency is as high as 13 GHz. To verify its use to RF applications, we designed 2 GHz differential LC VCO. The measurement result of phase noise is -112 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 100 kHz from a 2GHz carrier frequency. Tuning range is about 500 MHz (25%), and current consumption varies from 5mA to 8.4 mA using bias control technique. Implemented in $0.35-{\mu}m$ SiGe BiCMOS technology, the VCO occupies $400\;um{\times}800\;um$ of silicon area.

  • Biomass expansion factors, which convert timber volume (or dry weight) to biomass, are used for estimating the forest biomass and accounting for the carbon budget at a regional or national scale. We estimated the biomass conversion and expansion factors (BCEF), biomass expansion factors (BEF), root to shoot ratio (R), and ecosystem biomass expansion factor (EBEF) for Quercus mongolica Fisch. and Quercus variabilis Bl. forests based on publications in Korea. The mean BCEF, BEF, and R for Q. mongolica was 1.0383 Mg/$m^3$ (N = 27; standard deviation [SD], 0.5515), 1.3572 (N = 27; SD, 0.1355), and 0.2017 (N = 32; SD, 0.0447), respectively. The mean BCEF, BEF, and R for Q. variabilis was 0.7164 Mg/$m^3$ (N = 17; SD, 0.3232), 1.2464 (N = 17; SD, 0.0823), and 0.1660 (N = 8; SD, 0.0632), respectively. The mean EBEF, as a simple method for estimating the ground vegetation biomass, was 1.0216 (N = 7; SD, 0.0232) for Q. mongolica forest ecosystems, and 1.0496 (N = 8; SD, 0.0725) for Q. variabilis forest ecosystems. The biomass expansion factor values in this study may be better estimates of forest biomass in Q. mongolica or Q. variabilis forests of Korea compared with the default values given by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

  • The purpose of this study was to identify motivation factors of marathon crew members using Q methodology. Four distinct factors were emerged throughout the analysis: the first factor is 'the major event participation preference' who is seeking mega or big marathon events to enjoy festival atmosphere. The second factor is 'special meaningful event participation preference' who prefers to participate marathon events to help disabled people or childeren. The third factor is 'the tourism type marathon event participation preference' who is seeking to participate marathon event with tourism. The last factor is 'the preference type for record breaking ' who is seeing the place is accessability, a good season and running course to break personal record.

  • This paper presents a novel modified coaxial cavity resonator and its application to bandpass filters with compact size and improved quality factor(Q-factor). The proposed resonator is made up of ${\Gamma}-shape$ or curved four inner conductive posts within a single cavity, which provides quadruplet to realize bandpass filter. No metallic walls inside the cavity are required, and thus the utilization efficiency of the cavity space is improved. As a result, the unloaded Q can be approximately 15 % higher in comparison to the conventional coaxial resonator, or more than 35 % volume saving can be achieved while maintaining the similar Q-factor value with the conventional designs. In addition, due to the multiple cross-coupling occurring within the cavity, including the source-to-load coupling, four flexible transmission zeros can be created to realize different filtering functions. Simulations as well as experimental results of four- and eight-pole filters are presented to validate this attractive design concept. Good agreement between measured and computed results is obtained.

  • In this paper, optimal deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) process conditions for fused quartz were experimentally determined by Taguchi method, and fused quartz-based micro cantilevers were fabricated. In addition, comparative study on Q-factors of fused quartz and silicon micro cantilevers was performed. Using a silicon layer as an etch mask for fused quartz DRIE process, different 9 flow rate conditions of $C_4F_8$, $O_2$ and He gases were tested and the optimum combination of these factors was estimated. Micro cantilevers based on fused quartz were fabricated from this optimal DRIE condition. Through conventional silicon DRIE process, single-crystalline silicon micro cantilevers whose dimensions were similar to those of quartz cantilevers were also fabricated. Mechanical Q-factors were calculated to compare intrinsic damping properties of those two materials. Resonant frequencies and Q-factors were measured for the cantilevers having fixed widths and thicknesses and different lengths. The Q-factors were in a range of 64,000 - 108,000 for fused quartz cantilevers and 31,000 - 35,000 for silicon cantilevers. The experimental results supported that fused quartz had a good intrinsic damping property compared to that of single crystalline silicon.

  • In the present paper we suggested a parallel-branch structure of aluminum spiral inductor for the use of RF integrated circuit at 1∼3 GHz. The inductor was implemented on P-type silicon wafer (5∼15 Ω-cm) under the standard CMOS process and it showed a improved quality(Q) factor by more than 10% with no degradation of inductance. The effect of the structure modification on the Q factor and the inductance was scrutinized comparing with those of the conventional spiral inductors.

  • In this study, in order to develop compositions of ceramics suitable for piezoelectric actuator and ultrasonic vibrator applications using low temperature sintering, multilayer, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ as sintering aids. Their structural, piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the Zr/Ti ratio. As the Zr/Ti ratio increased, the electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and the mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ all increased with Zr/Ti ratio and then decreased after the ratio exceeded 50/50. At the ratio of Zr/Ti =49/51 and sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$; the density, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r$ piezoelectric $d_{33}$ constant and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ all showed the optimum values of 7.900 $g/cm^3$, 0.576, 856, 312 pC/N, 1,326, respectively. These property values are very suitable for multilayer ceramics actuator applications.

  • The management of power factor(PF) in the distribution line is treated according to the measurement a month about the feeder unit at the substation. In Korea, we have not researched into power factor in distribution system due to it's less weight. The reactive power in advanced countries is controlled automatically by the compensative condenser switch on/off under the monitoring. This paper first presents the optimal condenser position and proper capacity by lagrangue factor ${\lambda}_{Q}$ which is the line loss index about reactive power unit. Therefore, the largest ${\lambda}_{Q}$ node is the condenser injection point and we find out the best condenser capacity when the line loss is saturated by the moderation of condenser volume. By this method, we suggest 0.6% uprising PF by injection of 15 kVA condenser. Additionally, PF is analysed into 5 areas; large city, middle city, small city, farm village, fishing village by the use of Power Platform which is classified the same concept of the low load management in KEPCO. Two feeders of each area are selected by the worst results of PF in specified areas.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering piezoelectric transformer, $(Pb_{0.99-x}Ca_xSr_{0.01})Ti_{0.96}(Mn_{1/3}Sb_{2/3})_{0.04}O_3$ ceramic systems were fabricated using $Na_2CO_3-Li_2CO_3$ as sintering aids and investigated with the amount of Ca substitution. The piezoelectric transformer requires high electromechanical coupling factor $k_t$ and high mechanical quality factor $Q_{mt}$ for generating high output power At the ($PbCaSr)Ti(MnSb)O_3$ ceramics with 24mol% Ca substitution sintered at $900^{\circ}C$, electromechanical coupling factor $k_t$ and mechanical quality factor $Q_{mt}$ showed the optimal values of 0.504 and 1655 respectively, for thickness vibration mode multilayer piezoelectric transformer application.
