This study focuses on a determination of amount of Pt in the Pt/C for catalysts of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEMFC offer low weight and high power density and being considered for automotive and stationary power applications. The PEMFC performance is influenced by several factors, including catalysts and structure of electrode and membrane type. Catalyst of electrode is important factor for PEMFC. One of the obstacles prevent ing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells from commercialization is the high cost of noble metals to be used as catalyst, such as platinum To effectively use these metals, they have to be will dispersed to small particles on conductive carbon supports. The optimal amount of Pt in Pt/C for cathode catalyst was investigated by using polarization curves in single cell with $H_2/O_2$ operation.
Pt-V catalytic converter was installed on a heavy duty diesel engine and the characteristics of the emission reduction were tested using a engine dynamometer at various operating conditions. The emission reduction performance of Pt-V catalyst was also compared with that of a commercialized Pt catalyst currently being used in some of the heavy duty diesel engines in advanced countries. The effects of Pt-V and Pt catalysts on regulated and unregulated emissions were investigated using a 0.05 weight percent sulfur content fuel with an engine dynamometer Experiments for gaseous emissions (CO, HC and aldehyde) as well as particulate emissions (TPM, SOF and sulfate) have been conducted at several operating conditions such as T-7 mode, D-13 mode and S-13 mode before and after installing the Pt-V and Pt catalysts in the exhaust system. The emission reduction performance of Pt catalyst with respect to CO, HC, SOF, PAHs and aldehyde was found to be a little higher than that of Pt-V catalyst, but the Pt catalyst showed innate disadvantage of causing an increase of PM due to the sulfate formation via high SO2 conversion at high exhaust temperature, especially above 45$0^{\circ}C$.
A 20 wt % Pt/C is fabricated and characterized for use as the cathode catalyst in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). By using the polyol method, the fabrication process is optimized by modifying the carbon addition sequence and precursor mixing conditions. The crystallographic structure, particle size, dispersion, and activity toward oxygen reduction of the as-prepared catalysts are compared with those of commercial Pt/C catalysts. The most effective catalyst is obtained by ultrasonic treatment of ethylene glycol-carbon mixture and immediate mixing of this mixture with a Pt precursor at the beginning of the synthesis. The catalyst exhibits very uniform particle size distribution without agglomeration. The mass activities of the as-prepared catalyst are 13.4 mA/$mg_{Pt}$ and 51.0 mA/$mg_{Pt}$ at 0.9 V and 0.85 V, respectively, which are about 1.7 times higher than those of commercial catalysts.
This paper reports the investigation of the physical and chemical characteristics of the prepared 3Pt-2MgO-$3ZrO_2$-$2CeO_2/Al_2O_3$ DOC, based on its hydrothermal aging. As a result of impregnating and reducing the $H_2PtCl_6$$6H_2O$ precursor on a ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ basis, it was well dispersed into small particles with the range 2-3nm. This was because the $Al_2O_3$ acted as a barrier to prevent movement of the catalyst particles. For a hydrothermally aged catalyst for 9h at $700^{\circ}C$, its performance when purifying harmful gases decreased compared to a fresh catalyst, but its specific surface area was at the same level. This was because the performance of the catalyst was reduced by the sintering of the precious metal Pt, rather than by washcoat sintering and pore clogging. For an excessively hydrothermally aged catalyst for 9h at $850^{\circ}C$, Pt grew into an approximately 50nm class, formed a cluster compared to a fresh catalyst. The $CeO_2$ promoters also formed clusters among components of the same type, reducing their specific surface area to $114m^2/g$, which was 14% less than a fresh catalyst.
In this paper, we characterized bimetallic Pt-Ru/C alloy catalysts having four different compositions and compared the catalytic activities of the prepared alloys for CO oxidation. ICP-AES, EDS, XRD, TEM, and XAS were used to investigate the composition, degree of alloying, particle size, and electronic structure of the prepared Pt-Ru/C catalysts. Those results indicated the synthesis of the alloy catalysts with intended composition and uniform size. The electrochemical study of the characterized alloys showed higher catalytic activity for CO oxidation than that of the commercial Pt/C (E-TEK, Inc., 20 wt %) catalyst. Especially, it was shown that the alloy catalyst with Ru composition of 50 atomic % gave the highest catalytic activity for CO oxidation.
In order to commercialize Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC), the cathode catalyst such as Platinum supported Carbon (Pt/C) need to have a high activity of Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR). In this study, the 20% Pt/C was synthesized using the chemical reduction method while the crystallinity of Platinum (Pt) particles were controlled under heat treatment conditions. The activity of synthesized Pt catalysts was evaluated using electrochemical measurement. Compared with the $i_{ORR}$ at 0.8 V of 20% Pt/C heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ and the 20% Pt/C that were not heated and commercial 20% Pt/C, the $i_{ORR}$ at 0.8 V of 20% Pt/C heattreated at $500^{\circ}C$ was 9.5 and 1.7 times higher than those of the 20% Pt/C and commercial 20% Pt/C that were not heated. It was considered that the crystallinity and particle size affect the ORR activity of the Pt/C catalysts.
