This paper presents a 3D face modeling method using a CCD camera and a projector (LCD projector or Slide projector). The camera faces the human face and the projector casts white stripe patterns on the human face. The 3D shape of the face is extracted from spatial and temporal locations of the white stripe patterns on a series of image frames. The proposed method employs region segmentation and multi-beam techniques for efficient 3D modeling of hair region and faster 3D scanning respectively. In the proposed method, each image is segmented into face, hair, and shadow regions, which are independently processed to obtain the optimum results for each region. The multi-beam method, which uses a number of equally spaced stripe patterns, reduces the total number of image frames and consequently the overall data acquisition time. Light beam calibration is adopted for efficient light plane measurement, which is not influenced by the direction (vertical or horizontal) of the stripe patterns. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides a favorable 3D face modeling results, including the hair region.
On live performance such as play and musical, various stage effects are utilized to attract a diverse audience. These stage effects include traditional direction techniques, striking display effects and all kinds of ways of being immersed in the scene. In this paper, we propose a novel digital visual effects(digilog) for controlling the surface texture of objects based on spatial augmented reality. For this purpose, we present a method of neutralizing the appearance of an arbitrary object using a projector-camera system. To make the object appear as if it is a transparent object by projecting a carefully determined compensation image onto the surface of objects, we use the homography method for a simple and effective off-line projector-camera calibration. The successful uses of the basic algorithm of Smart Projector for measuring radiometric parameters led us believe that this method may be used for temporal variation of plays and musicals.

A distortion correction technique is presented to enhance the 3D scanning performance of a micro-size camera-projector system. Recently, several types of micro-size digital projectors and cameras are available. However, there have been few effort to develop a micro-size 3D scanning system. We develop a micro-sized 3D scanning system which is based on the structured light technique. Three images of phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns are projected, captured, and analyzed by the system to reconstruct 3D shapes of very small objects. To overcome inherent optical imperfection of the micro 3D sensor, we correct the vignetting and blooming effects which cause distortions in the phase image. Error analysis and 3D scanning results on small real objects are presented to show the performance of the developed 3D scanning system.

This paper deals with noise reduction on a light source driving board in a projector. We analyze causes of noise/vibration in the circuit with the present increasing use of LD and LED driving boards. The main source of noise is the MLCC in the driving board. Our aim is to investigate how the mechanical arrangement of the circuit elements affects noise reduction. The result of our experiment shows that noise can be reduced by symmetrical arrangement and slots in PCB. This result is expected to facilitate a variety of applications for manufactures without a need to change circuit elements.

By using beam-projectors, we can easily configure a big image system. In the process of installing beam-projectors, however manual steps are essentially needed to perform a calibration such that distortions can be minimized. In order to automatically perform the correction of distortion, in this paper we propose a new auto-calibration method for beam-projector, which is based on Zigbee and can be easily implemented by simple hardware and software. In the proposed scheme, we recognize the required image project area by using Zigbee-based sensor module, and then we can obtain the best beam projection even in the case that the screen is badly twisted.
The quality of images displayed by using an LC projector is strongly influenced by the cell-gap variations over LC panels, the essential components of the projector. We show that such influence can be relieved by introducing slit patterns in the pixel electrodes in the LC panels. The improvement comes from the compensation of the influence of cell-gap variations by optical anisotropy variations arising from the lateral components of the electric field generated by the slit patterned electrodes. Simulations show that cell-gap tolerance can be increased by more than 50% by introducing the slit patterns. This method can be used in TN mode LC panels, which use LC's with positive dielectric anisotropy. tropy.
This paper proposes a vision-based underwater laser scanner with separate structures for an underwater camera and a line laser projector. Because the two devices can be adaptively placed regardless of the features of the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV), the scanner has significant advantages in relation to its availability and flexibility. Position calibration between the underwater camera and laser projector guarantees a 3D measuring performance with high accuracy. To verify the proposed underwater laser scanner, a test-bed system was manufactured, which consisted of the laser projector, camera, Pan&Tilt, and Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS). A camera-laser calibration test and simple 3D reconstruction test were performed in a water tank and the experimental results are reported.
In this paper, we propose a method that can compensate the geometric distortions of image caused from an arbitrary nonflat display surface(or wall) under the environment of portable overhead projector without a flat screen. In the proposed method, we first project a grid pattern to an arbitrary nonflat display surface and then derive an equation of straight line that represents the geometry relationship between the distorted grid pattern and the original grid pattern. Next, after determining the proper size of the original grid pattern according to the form of the display surface, we generate a compensation pattern from the derived equation of straight line, which can symmetrically compensate for the distorted image. Finally, we compensate for the geometric distortions of the projected image by segmenting the real image to be projected from portable overhead projector and prewarping it according to the compensation pattern. To evaluate the proposed method, we performed experiments of image compensation on inclined surface, bent surface and curved surface that are frequently occurred in the environment of portable overhead projector without a flat screen. From the experimental results, we found that the proposed method could be very effective in compensating for the general types of the geometric distortions of the projected images.

One of the desired features for the realizations of high quality Information and Telecommunication services in future is "the Sensation of Reality". This will be achieved only with the visual communication based on the 3- dimensional (3-D) moving images. The main difficulties in realizing 3-D moving image communication are that there is no developed data transmission technology for the hugh amount of data involved in 3-D images and no established technologies for 3-D image recording and displaying in real time. The currently known stereoscopic imaging technologies can only present depth, no moving parallax, so they are not effective in creating the sensation of the reality without taking eye glasses. The more effective 3-D imaging technologies for achieving the sensation of reality are those based on the multiview 3-D images which provides the object image changes as the eyes move to different directions. In this paper, a multiview 3-D imaging system composed of 8 CCD cameras in a case, a RGB(Red, Green, Blue) beam projector, and a holographic screen is introduced. In this system, the 8 view images are recorded by the 8 CCD cameras and the images are transmitted to the beam projector in sequence by a signal converter. This signal converter converts each camera signal into 3 different color signals, i.e., RGB signals, combines each color signal from the 8 cameras into a serial signal train by multiplexing and drives the corresponding color channel of the beam projector to 480Hz frame rate. The beam projector projects images to the holographic screen through a LCD shutter. The LCD shutter consists of 8 LCD strips. The image of each LCD strip, created by the holographic screen, forms as sub-viewing zone. Since the ON period and sequence of the LCD strips are synchronized with those of the camera image sampling adn the beam projector image projection, the multiview 3-D moving images are viewed at the viewing zone.

This paper models the hue shift phenomenon and proposes a hue correction method to give perceptual matching between projector with and without additional white channel. To quantify the hue shift phenomenon for whole hue angle, 24 color patches with the same lightness are frist created along equally-spaced hue angle, and these are displayed one by one both displays with different luminance levels. Next, each hue value of the patches appeared on the projector with additional white channel is adjusted by observers until the hue values of patches on both displays appear the same visually. After obtaining the hue shift values from the color matching experiment, these values are piecewise fit into six polynomial functions, which approximately determine shifted hue amounts for an arbitrary hue values of each pixel in projector with additional white channel and are utilized to correct them. Actually, an input RGB image is converted to CIELAB LCH color space to get hue values of each pixel and this hue value is shifted as much as the amount calculated by the functions of hue shift model for correction. Finally, corrected image is inversely converted to an output RGB image. For an evaluation, the matching experiment with several test images and the z-score comparisons were performed.
