Swallowing disorders or dysphagia, which are difficulties with the act of swallowing, can occur at different phases such as oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal phase in the swallowing process. These disorders can be caused by structural, functional abnormalities or psychological problems. Dentists can actively provide patients suffering from dysphagia with comprehensive professional care, especially from the cognitive stage of food to the pharyngeal stage of the swallow. Many cases of dysphagia can be improved with careful managements based on dental professionals' knowledge, including meticulous evaluation of masticatory and swallowing functions, training on eating and swallowing, and fabrication of palatal or lingual augmentation prosthesis. The important thing is that prevention of these disorders through the oral health care instruction and planned follow-up dental visit at periodic intervals in order to manage the problems caused by anatomical, functional, and psychological reason.

This study was carried out to evaluate cytotoxic effects of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. (A. macrocephala Koidz.) extract on NIH 3T3 fibloblast. SK-MEL-3 (HBT 69) and KB (ATCC No, OCL 17) cell lines. Disruptions in cell organelles were determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-y1)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazoliumbromide (MTT) assay. 10.2 mg/ml Concentration of A. macrocephala Koidz. extracts in SK-MEL-3 showed that their susceptibility (sensitivity) to these compounds decreased in the following order ; adriamycin > H₂O > ethyl acetate > ethyl alcohol > chloroform > n-hexane in SK-MEL-3 cell lines ; 5-FU > H₂O > n-hexane > ethyl acetate > ethyl alcohol > chloroform in KB cell lines. In order to develop an antimicrobial agent, A. macrocephala Koidz. was extracted with solvents. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of each solvent extract of A. macrocephala Koidz. against microogranisms were also examined. Antimicrobial activities of ampicillin and ketoconazole as references were compared to those of each solvent extract of A. macrocephala Koidz. The antimicrobial activity of the ethyl acetate soluble extract of A. macrocephala Koidz. had growth inhibition activity against S. mutans and P. putida (MICs. 500 ㎍/ml). These results suggest that the ethyl acetate soluble extract of A. macrocephala Koidz. possessed antitumorous and antimicrobial agents
The purpose of this study is to cover dental hygienists who work for metropolitan dental hospitals or clinics in Seoul city, Incheon city and Gyeonggi province from January to April 2009 and profile their awareness of Long-term Senior Care Insurance System (hereinafter called 'LSCI (System)', so that it may provide material reference data to contribute to expanding and establishing oral health medical services in the framework of LSCI System. As a result, this study could come to the following conclusions: 1. It was found that the highest priority of dental hygienists' visiting oral hygienic services under LSCI System was focused on 'caring and preventive treatment', and their secondary priority was focused upon 'oral health education.' 2. In response to a question item about whether dental hygienists need dentist's prescription in written before performing their visiting oral hygienic services, it was found that 38.2% dental hygienists answered 'Yes (necessary)' and 61.8% answered 'No (unnecessary).' 3. In response to a question item about whether dental hygienists may open up long-term senior care center, it was found that absolute majority of dental hygienists (93.4%) answered 'No' and only 6.6% dental hygienists answered 'Yes.' The standardized professional education are thought to be needed to be developed aiming at the success in oral-hygiene service within a LSCI, by strengthening professionalism in dental hygienists.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a clinical preventative care program, based on a dental hygiene process (accessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation; ADPIE) in a dental clinic, by analyzing patient recognition, knowledge, practice, and satisfaction with respect to oral health. The collected data (in percentages) were analyzed Fisher's exact test and paired t-test using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 (IBM Co., USA). This study demonstrated a significant difference in oral health knowledge, recognition, and practice before and after the clinical preventive care program (p<0.05). The results were significant in the individual preventive plan within the planning stage, and in the professional teeth cleaning implementation stage (p<0.05). This result can be attributed to the sympathy of the dental hygienist (p<0.05). There was a positive correlation between recommending dental checkups and regular checking of the (r=0.552, p<0.05), undergoing radiography (r=0.434, p<0.01), following an individual preventive plan (r=0.568, p<0.01), undergoing proximal machine teeth cleaning (r=0.437, p<0.05), following tooth brushing instructions (r=0.552, p<0.05), and the evaluation results (r=1.000, p<0.05). Our results demonstrate, that the clinical preventive care program, based on dental hygiene, is an effective program. Given the positive effect of dental revisits and patient recommendations promoting dental hygienists, it is hoped that this preventative program will be widely used.

Purpose : Although Korea's health insurance system and access to medical care are well established compared to other countries, the rate of non-fulfillment of dental treatment is high. Medical use rates can be affected by economic characteristics, individual heatlh condtions, health concerns, and health behaviors. This study was implemented to investigate the effect of the middle-aged elderly people's family living together on the dental examination rate and to use it as basic data for program development, research, and poicies to promote oral health. Methods : Raw data from the 7th national health and nutrition survey conducted by the Korea centers for disease control and prevention (2016~2018) were used and analyzed using SPSS 21.0 Version (IBM, United States). Results : As a result of the study family types accroding to general characteristics, the more women are (p<.001), the higther the age (p<.001), the lower the hosehold income level (p<.001), the lower the educational background (p<.001), the more people who live in Eup-Myeon (p<.001) It was fouend that the rate of living alone was high. The dental examination rate according to general characteristics was related to age (p<.001), income (p<.001), and educational background (p<.001), and the higher the examination rate was in the same (p<.001), and the higher the family living together (p<.001). Factors influencing whether or not dental treatment was not performed were in the following order: household income (p<.001), age (p=.001), and family type (p=.017). Conclusion : The above results confirmed the relationship between family membership and dental examination rates, and measures such as the development and operation of participatory programs to improve public oral health by resolving medical inequality and enhancing health equity, and it is believed that the development of professional manpower and the operation of education and programs for professionals are necessary.
The job of dental hygienists is specialized, and they have to be capable of performing their primary duties including prevention of oral diseases, oral prophylaxis, and oral health education. To ensure their successful job performance, dentists should have an accurate understanding of their duties and need a change of mind-set about them. And there should be written legal and concrete regulations on the coverage of their work in order to let them boost their job performance with pride and a sense of responsibility. The purpose of this study was to examine the actual roles and job performance of dental hygienists in clinical field in an attempt to discuss the substantial job performance of dental hygienists and their job enlargement. It's basically meant to help enhance the efficiency and quality of medical services. The subjects in this study were 471 dental hygienists in dental clinics, dental hospitals, university hospitals and general hospitals across the nation, on whom a survey was conducted in person from March 2 to 25, 2005. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS Win 12.0 program, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. The major jobs they currently performed included oral health education, hospital management, simple duties, extensive dental hygiene duties and joint treatment assistance. They hoped to continue to be responsible for oral health education, preventive treatment and extensive dental hygiene duties. 2. As for their current job by age, extensive dental hygiene duties, preventive treatment, joint treatment assistance, preserving treatment, prosthetic treatment and pediatric treatment were most conducted by the dental hygienists who were at the age of 26 to less than 31, and those who were at the age of 31 and up were most responsible for hospital management and simple duties. 3. As to job awareness by workplace, their workload was statistically significantly different according to their workplace. The hospital employees took care of more work than those in clinics. 4. Concerning job awareness by age, the younger dental hygienists suffered more role conflicts and were given a less free hand in work handling, the middle-aged group's job was uncertain. Legal regulations about the coverage of their work should be prepared in detail as a measure to stir up their responsible job performance and pride. In order to take advantage of experienced dental hygienists, their duties should be more differentiated and specialized, and their working conditions should be improved to boost their job satisfaction. That is, they should be given ample chances for promotion and serving as a middle manager and be given fair treatment according to their career. If their work is accurately darified and specialized based on career, it will boost the efficiency of dental treatment. Dental hygienists also should direct sustained efforts into self-development in order to become a skilled and professional oral health personnel.
The study was intended to investigate elementary schoolers' oral health status according to whether the school have and manage an school oral health clinic or not in order to provide useful information for continuously developing the school oral health clinic 1,163 children in Hwasan elementary school in Hwasung city and 485 children in S elementary school in the same locality were selected as the experimental group and the control group, respectively, and orally examined from May 1st to 30th, 2004. In recent years, the numbers of the orthodontic dental patients have been rapidly increased in adolescent or young adult aged generation. It has been well known that it would be very hard to control the oral hygiene cares for orthodontic applied dental patient because of the complexity of the appliance. So the caries prevalence of the orthodontic dental patients would be higher than non-appliance persons, and it might be easy to cause the dental caries especially on the labial or buccal surface of the tooth through equipping the fixed type appliance with a long period, even though the alignment of the teeth would be arranged well. So, the massive preventive program for preventive dentistry should be needed for the dental patients for orthodontic treatment, in order to protect the dental caries and the periodontal disease for them. But, lots of the dentists or dental hygienists sometimes neglect of this point for preventive dental cares orthodontic dental patients, or do not know the importance and how to manage the skill for the preventive dental works in clinical. The $Papillon-Lef\`{e}vre$ Syndrome(PLS), a disease with autosomal recessive inheritance, is characterized by diffuse hyperkeratosis of the palms and soles, mostly prepubertal periodontitis and premature loss of primary and permanent dentition. The etiology of the destruction of periodontal tissues has not been completely clarified. In recent years, two main factors are suggested to be responsible for tooth loss ; firstly, the presence of gram negative microorganisms in the periodontal pockets of the patients. The other factor suggested is cellular deficiency in chemotaxic and phagocytic function of neutrophylic granulocytes. Resent data suggestes that mechanical debridement in conjunction with antibiotic therapy may be successful in periodontal management of $Papillon-Lef\`{e}vre$ Syndrome, particularly if administered early. In this study, a $Papillon-Lef\`{e}vre$ Syndrome patient was studied clinically, radiologically, histopathologically and microbiologically. 5 years female patient with gingival swelling and destruction of periodontal structure on the whole dentition were examined and palmar and plantar hyperkeratosis were can be seen. On microbiological analysis, Actinobacillus actino-mycetemcomitans was performed. Concurrently, the children recieved extraction of maxillary anterior teeth and construction of removable prosthetis. The combination of professional oral hygiene care and antibiotic therapy improved the dermatologic and periodontal condition.
