  • Cognitive Radio (CR) users need to sense the environment or channel at regular time interval for sharing the spectrum band of the primary users (PUs). Once find the spectrum idle, CR users start their transmission through it. Even while transmitting, they need to continue the sensing process so that they can leave the spectrum immediately whenever find a PU wanting to use the band. Therefore, detecting PUs is one of the main functions of cognitive radio before transmission and higher the detection probability ensures better protection to the primary users. However, it is not possible to attain a high detection probability (or a low miss detection probability) and low false alarm probability simultaneously as there is a tradeoff between false alarm probability ($P_{fa}$) and the probability of detection ($P_d$). In this paper, the author has provided a comprehensive study on different sensing techniques and discussed their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, it is expected that, with this article, readers can have a through understanding of sensing techniques in CR and the current research trends in this area.

  • CR(Cognitive Radio) technology is maximized frequency reuse using unused frequency band. Conventional cooperative spectrum sensing has fixed false alarms. so all cooperative user has equal threshold. This problem is caused degradation of detection probability. so we propose and analysis the system model that false alarm differential setting through CSI(channel state information) for resonable threshold. Simulation results show improvement of detection probability.

  • We have studied an efficient threshold level for desired target detection in radar system in the paper. A desired target searching detection method detects desired target according to changing for false alarm probability. This time, false alarm probability is close relation to threshold level. Low threshold level can improve detection for desired target, but detect noise signal. Therefor, This method is not good one. In this paper, we propose efficient threshold level method in order to estimation for desired target. Through simulation, we are analysis and performance to compare general method with proposal method. We show that proposed method is more good proof than general method.

  • Recently, a lot of research efforts has been directed toward spectrum sensing techniques exploiting the some characteristics of power spectrum. Among them, a sensing technique employing the maximum of power spectrum as a test statistic has appeared in the literature and its false alarm probability was also derived under the assumption that the test statistic follows the Gaussian distribution. This paper provides an exact form of the false alarm probability without using the assumption and compares it with the previous work.

  • This paper proposes and analyzes a new CFAR(Constant False Alarm Rate) detector called the EXGO(Excision Greatest Of)-CFAR. This is the combination of the EXCA(Excision Cell Averaging)-CFAR that shows a good performance under the influence of interferences and the GO(Greatest Of)-CFAR that fights well with clutter edges. For the performance analysis, the formulas for the detection probability and the false alarm probability are derived and computed, and the results are compared with other existing CFAR detectors. Our analysis shows that the proposed EXGO-CFAR considerably improves the false-alarm-rate performance of the EXCA-CFAR at clutter edges while maintaining the high detection probability performance of the EXCA-CFAR in the homogeneous and/or interference noise environment.

  • In this paper, Threshold setting method is proposed to improve detection probability for cooperative sensing. Even if cooperative users have all same false alarm rate, each user has different threshold due to pass ad-hoc channel. threshold level is related to detection probability. So, we select the highest threshold among cooperative users and then share threshold information for getting the high detection probability.

  • Most of Automatic Accident Detection Algorithm has a problem of detecting an accident as traffic congestion. Actually, center's managers deal with accidents depend on watching CCTV or accident report by drivers even though they run the Automatic Accident Detection system. It is because of the system's detecting errors such as detecting non-accidents as accidents, and it makes decreasing in the system's overall reliability. It means that Automatic Accident Detection Algorithm should not only have high detection probability but also have low false alarm probability, and it has to detect accurate accident spot. The study tries to verify and evaluate the effectiveness of using Gaussian Mixture Model and individual vehicle tracking to adapt Accident Detection Algorithm to Center Management System by measuring accident detection probability and false alarm probability's frequency in the real accident.

  • Tracking and detecting targets by the microwave seeker is affected by the clutter reflecting from the earth's surface. In order to detect retreating targets in look-down scenario, which appear in the sidelobe clutter (SLC) region, in the microwave seeker of high pulse repetition frequency (HPRF) mode, it is necessary to understand statistical characteristics of the surface SLC. Statistical analysis of SLC has been conducted for several kinds of the surface using data obtained by the captive flight test of the microwave seeker in the HPRF mode. The probability density function (PDF) fitting is conducted for several kinds and conditions of the surface. PDFs and PDF parameters, which best describe statistical distribution of the SLC power, are estimated. By using the estimated PDFs and PDF parameters, analyses for setting the target-detection thresholds, which give a desired level of target-detection false alarm probability, are made. These analysis materials for statistical characteristics of SLC power and the target-detection threshold can be used in various fields, such as development of a target-detection method, the constant false alarm rate processing.

  • In this paper, throughput of IEEE 802.11 carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA) with collision-avoidance (CA) protocols in non-saturated traffic conditions is presented taking into account the impact of imperfect channel sensing. The imperfect channel sensing includes both missed-detection and false alarm and their impact on the utilization of IEEE 802.11 analyzed and expressed as a closed form. To include the imperfect channel sensing at the physical layer, we modified the state transition probabilities of well-known two state Markov process model. Simulation results closely match the theoretical expressions confirming the effectiveness of the proposed model. Based on both theoretical and simulated results, the choice of the best probability detection while maintaining probability of false alarm is less than 0.5 is a key factor for maximizing utilization of IEEE 802.11.

  • Spectrum sensing plays an important role in spectrum sharing. Energy detection is generally used because it does not require a priori knowledge of primary user (PU) signals; however, it is sensitive to noise uncertainty. An order statistics (OS) detector provides inherent protection against nonhomogeneous background signals. However, no analysis has been conducted yet to apply OS detection to spectrum sensing in a wireless channel to solve noise uncertainty. In this paper, we propose a robust spectrum sensing scheme based on generalized order statistics (GOS) and analyze the exact false alarm and detection probabilities under noise uncertainty. From the equation of the exact false alarm probability, the threshold value is calculated to maintain a constant false alarm rate. The detection probability is obtained from the calculated threshold under noise uncertainty. As a fusion rule for cooperative spectrum sensing, we adopt an OR rule, that is, a 1-out-of-N rule, and we call the proposed scheme GOS-OR. The analytical results show that the GOS-OR scheme can achieve optimum performance and maintain the desired false alarm rates if the coefficients of the GOS-OR detector can be correctly selected.
