  • In this paper, We have studied the structure of a Telemetry Transmitter capable of transmitting variable data rates. This paper proposed a structure combining variable pre-modulation filter with cutoff characteristic with variable input sample rate converter. Variable pre-modulation filter has the same characteristics as pre-modulation filter and is converted to a constant sampling rate without structural changes according to the variable input data rate. We propose a software program that actively controls variable pre-modulation filter and variable input sample rate converter to respond to real-time changing data.

Modulation and Pre-equalization Method to minimize time delay in Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (등화형 디지털 동일채널 중계기의 시간지연을 최소화하기 위한 변조 및 전치등화 방법)

  • In this paper we propose and analyze a novel modulation and pre-equalization method to minimize signal processing time delay for the Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (EDOCR) in ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) terrestrial digital TV system. The proposed modulation method uses Equi-Ripple (ER) filter coefficients instead of conventional Square Root Raised Cosine (SRRC) after coefficients for VSB (Vestigial Side Bands) pulse shaping. And the proposed pre-equalization method calculates pre-equalizer filter coefficients by using baseband signal as reference signal and demodulated repeater output signal, then generates a new VSB pulse shaping filter coefficients by convolutioning ER filter coefficients and pre-equalizer filter coefficients. The newly generated pulse shaping filter does not have minimized time delay by adjusting the number of pre-taps of the filter, but also compensates linear distortions caused by ER filter and mask filter.

  • A uniformly sampled digital pulse-width modulation adopting a pre-compensation filter scheme for applications in high-resolution digital-to-analog data conversion is described. It is shown that linearization of the intrinsic distortion resulting in uniformly sampled pulse-width modulation can be achieved by using a non-integer delay digital filter embedded within a noise shaping re-quantizer.

  • In shallow water environment, the detection performance of an active sonar using matched filter with LFM(linear frequency modulation) pulse can be seriously degraded by reverberation which is considered as non-white noise. To reduce the effect of reverberation, a whitening filter preceding the matched fitter, is usually adopted. In the conventional pre-whitening filter, it is assumed that local stationarity is preserved between detection block and its right ahead block. And then by using the characteristics of the reverberation of preceding block, the reverberation of detection block is estimated and whitened. According to the environment of shallow water, the stationarity of reverberation may be preserved for more blocks. In this case, the reverberation of the detection block can be estimated more accurately if more blocks are used. In this paper, the real reverberation signal which is obtained from shallow sea is analyzed and its proper region of estimation block is examined. And the performance of pre-whitening matched filter is compared and analyzed according to the region of estimation block.

A Study on Pulse Shaping of Linear Phase filter block with Variable Cutoff Frequency in PCM/FM transmission (PCM/FM 전송에서 가변 컷오프 특성을 갖는 선형위상 필터 블록의 펄스 성형에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to design and analyze the pre-modulation filter with the variable -3dB cutoff frequency and linear phase response for bandlimiting the allocation of radio frequency bandwidth in PCM/FM transmission system. For the implementation of this required filter, the digital FIR filter, DAC and variable 2nd order LPF have been constructed with the filter block which designed and analyzed by each stage in order to satisfy the attenuation characteristic requirement of the analog 7th order bessel filter. The paper also concerned the linear phase properties for the filter block. Especially we have carried out the linear phase simulation with real parts for variable 2nd order LPF and compared this simulation results with the one of the fixed bandwidth 2nd order bessel filter for validating the linear phase requirement.

  • The purpose of this study is to design, implement and verify the pre-modulation filter with the variable -3dB cutoff frequency and linear phase response for bandlimiting the allocation of radio frequency bandwidth for PCM/FM transmission. For the design of this required filter, the digital FIR filter, DAC system and tuneable 2nd order LPF have been constructed and simulated according to the attenuation characteristic requirement of the amplitude frequency response by each stage. From these results, we have implemented the filter and verified the analog conversion hardware part which is composed of DAC system and tuneable 2nd order LPF for the interpolation of the discrete sequences. Especially this paper proposes and carries out the verification processes using the tone generator and the calibration procedures for more precise frequency response of the filter.

  • This paper presents the design and implementation of a video processor for the device of need TV-OUT function. The designed video processor satisfies the standard conditions of ITU-R(International Telecommunication Union-Radiocommunication) BT.470. Also, in order to apply various digital device, we concentrate upon hardware complexity. ITU-R BT.470 can be classified as NTSC, PAL or SECAM. NTSC and PAL use QAM(Quardarature Amplitude Modulation) to transmit color difference signals and SECAM uses FM(Frequency Modulation). FM must have antic-cloche filter but filter recommended by ITU-R BT.470 is not easy to design due to sharpness of the frequency response. So this paper proposes that the special quality of anti-cloche filter is transformed easy to design and the modulation method is modified to be identical with the result required at standard. The processor can control power consumption by output mode to apply portable digital devices. The proposed processor is experimentally demonstrated with ALTERA FPGA APEX20KE EP20K1000EBC652-3 device and SAMSUNG LCD-TV.

Polar Transmitter with Differential DSM Phase and Digital PWM Envelope

  • A low-power low-cost polar transmitter for EDGE is designed in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS. A differential delta-sigma modulator (DSM) tunes a three-terminal voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to perform RF phase modulation, where the VCO tuning curve is digitally pre-compensated for high linearity and the carrier frequency is calibrated by a dual-mode low-power frequency-locked loop (FLL). A digital intermediate-frequency (IF) pulse-width5 modulator (PWM) drives a complementary power-switch followed by an LC filter to achieve envelope modulation with high efficiency. The proposed transmitter with 9mW power dissipation relaxes the time alignment between the phase and envelope modulations, and achieves an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 4% and phase noise of -123dBc/Hz at 400kHz offset frequency.

Performance Improvement for Visible Light Communications Using Pre-Equalizer and Optical Design (전치 등화기와 광학설계를 이용한 가시광통신 전송 용량 및 거리 향상 연구)

  • In this paper, we design the pre-equalizer of transmitter circuit in order to enhancement modulation bandwidth of white LED which is light source of VLC (Visible Light Communication). Also, we eliminate yellow light component by optical filtering which mitigate frequency response of white LED. Power loss by optical filtering is overcome by using convex lens. By applying proposed system, 3 dB bandwidth deciding modulation bandwidth of white LED increases from 3 MHz to more than 25 MHz and the transmission distance increases by optical design which secure additional signal power. We optically modulate NRZ-OOK signal to LED and receive light signal using APD. We analyze received data using CSA and RFSA. As a result, we experimently demonstrate the possibility that transmits NRZ-OOK signal up to 30 Mbps in 4.5 m, 50 Mbps in 1.5 m through the pre-equalizer and optical design.

Analysis for the Bit Error Probability in the PCM-NRZ/FM Telemetry System (PCM-NRZ/FM Telemetry 시스템에서 Bit 오차확률에 관한 분석)

  • PCM-NRZ/FM Telemetry system is constructed on the basis of RF link with FM modulatedand NRZ-L binary coded PCM data are assumed to transmit through 5th-order Bessel filter. Upon demodulated by the limiter-discriminator at the receiver, the probability of bit error, which is important for performance estimation of digital system, is analyzed against SNR. The analysis based on the following parameters, that is bit rate 140kHz, frequency of pre-modulation filter f-100kHz, maximum frequency deviation of transmitter 2f=300kHz, was performed. As a result, when the telemetry system with the parameters above is designed, the probability of bit error is obtained as 10 along with fT=0.7 and h=2, T=2.
