  • Recently, sectionalizing switches have been coming to be operated by remote control through the distribution SCADA system. However, the problem of determining the optimal switching sequence is a combinatorial optimization problem, and is quite difficult to solve, Hence, it is imperative to develop practically applicable solution algorithms create a new arbitral distribution system configuration from an initial configuration, and some of these algorithms do not show a load transfer sequence to reach the objective system.

  • Progresses in numerical prediction of weather and climate have been in parallel with those of computing resources, especially the development of supercomputers. Advanced techniques in numerical modeling, computational schemes, and data assimilation cloud not have been practically achieved without the aid of supercomputers. With such techniques and computing powers, the accuracy of numerical forecasts has been tremendously improved. Supercomputers are also indispensible in constructing and executing the synthetic Earth system models. In this study, a brief overview on numerical weather / climate prediction, Earth system modeling, and the values of supercomputing is provided.

  • In the analysis of seepage behavior through the porous media, unsaturated domain should be included for obtaining more accurate results. The seepage programs considering its domain have been developed and practically used widely. The programs are reviewed and two case studies are presented in this paper. The case studies are performed using PC-SEEP and obtained good results for the cases of saturated-unsaturated transient flow.

  • Toguchi method is a systematic technique for designing high quality product at low cost. There are three steps in the Toguchi method, 1)system design, 2)parameter design, and 3)tolerance design. This paper considers the tolerance design for multiple performance characteristics which is practically important. We present two tolerance design procedures : grade selection and tolerance determining procedures. In grade selection procedure a scheme is presented that minimizes the sum of the price of low-level characteristics and the expected loss due to the variations of high-level characteristics. In tolerance determining procedure we determine the tolerances of the low-level characteristics.

  • This study was carried out to investigate quantitatively the relationship between the degree of rebar corrosion and the strength of reinforced concrete beams. After producing equations for the relationship between both the tensile properties of rebars and bond properties and the corrosion percentage of rebars. Finite element analysis and bending tests were conducted for RC beams damaged by corrosion of tension main rebar. As a result, it was made that the strength of RC beams damged by corrosion could be practically simulated by FEM using experimentally determined material representing the bond properties and the mechanical properties of corroded rebars.

  • Electrically conducting polymers such as polypyrrole(PPy) or poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)(PEDOT) were sequentially polymerized chemically and electrochemically on various kinds of woven fabrics, giving rise to the fabrics with high electrical conductivity. The specific volume resistivity of the fabric prepared in this study was extremely low as 0.2 $\Omega$-cm. We figured out the electrically conducting fabrics were practically useful for many applications such as an EMI shielding material, a flexible surface heating element or a strain sensor for large deformation.

  • This paper represents a study on disassembly sequence generation system for automobile parts. This system is practically very useful because proper disassembly sequence of end-of-life product becomes crucial as take-back obligations are imposed for environmental reasons. Therefore a disassembly sequence generation system is suggested to automatically derive all the feasible disassembly sequences from the assembly modeling files. As a result, in consideration of the all parts and subassemblies the optimum disassembly sequence is generated. And the optimum disassembly sequence for a certain part or subassembly can be also suggested.

  • The theoretical modeling of transition energy and absorption coefficient for intersubband transitions in quantum wells in presented. We include, as well as hartree and exchange-correlation potentials, boht depolarization effect and exciton-like effect which play great roles in heavily doped cases where practically reasonable absorption coefficients are available. Also, the calculated results are compared with the existing experimental values for .delta.-doped Si quantum wells to check the validity of our theoretical calculation.
