We examined the effect of strip visual stimulation pattern on postural balance control. It was performed by using motor driven clothe panel as visual stimulation. We also investigated the usefulness of HMD in the postural balance rehabilitation training system from the view of reducing the scale of experimental system. Our result showed that strip visual pattern was effective on postural balance control. It also indicated that HMD might be applied to clinical use as a new postural balance training system.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine how task-oriented training focused on lower extremity strengthening can affect mobility function and postural stability. METHODS: The study's subjects included 10 children with cerebral palsy: 7 girls and 3 boys between the ages of 4 and 9 whose Gross Motor Functional Classification System (GMFCS) level was I or II. Their functional mobility was gauged using the Gross Motor Function Measurement (GMFM), and their postural stability was evaluated using a force platform. Participants received task-oriented training focused on lower extremity strengthening for 5 weeks. The study used a paired t-test to investigate the difference in mobility function and postural stability of children with cerebral palsy before and after the lower extremity strengthening exercise. RESULTS: The GMFM dimensions D (standing) (p<.02) and E (walking) (p<.001) improved significantly between the pre-test and post-test. A significant increase in the posturographic center of pressure (CoP) shift and surface area of the CoP were found overall between the pre-test and post-test (p<.001). CONCLUSION: The present study provides evidence that an 8-week task-oriented training focused on strengthening the lower extremities is an effective and feasible strategy for improving the mobility function and postural stability of children with cerebral palsy.

Purpose:In this study is to verify the effects postural control training based on Bobath approach for body schema and visual perception on Middle Cerebral Artery(MCA) Infarcts. Methods:The subject was a 46 years old man with MCA infaction, lives in B city. An AB design for a single-subject research was used for this study. The procedures consisted of 1 time of baseline phase(A), 20 times of treatment phase(B). We applied the Bobath approach at the subject. Treatments included to facilitate trunk alignment and stability, and to train weight bearing and shifting, to facilitate pelvis movement, and to train walk especially stance phase and assist up-down stairs locomotion in environment similar to actual daily life. Results:With this treatment, the majority of body schema and visual perception and postural control was improved in treatment phase compared with in baseline phase. Therefore, this study supported the effectiveness of postural control training based on Bobath approach for body sechma and visual perception of hemiplegia. Conculusion:This study is integrated postural control training with Bobath approach that are widespread for hemiplegia and measured outcomes based on individualized therapy goals. Consequently the study is suggested the meaning of quality effectiveness of Bobath approach.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of visual feedback on the postural control of stroke patients, by systematically varying conditions of visual feedback [eye-open condition (EO) vs. eye-closed condition (EC)], and base-support (both-side support, affected-side support, and unaffected-side support). In this study, we allocated 41 stroke patients with no damage in the cerebellum and visual cortex who can walk at least 10 meters independently, and 35 normal adults who have no experience of stroke to the control group. Both groups were asked to perform a "sit-to-stand" task three to five times, and their postural control ability was measured and compared in terms of asymmetric dependence (AD) instead of the traditional symmetric index (SI) in the literature. The results showed that although both subject groups maintained better postural control in the EO condition than in the EC condition, the patient group appeared to be more stable in EC than in EO when they were required to perform the task of the support condition given on the affected side. These results implied that visual feedback can impair stroke patients' postural control when it is combined with a specific support condition.

Improvement in functional gait is one of treatment goals in treatment of cerebral palsy children. This study intended to examine the effects of insoles for postural correction on gait in spastic cerebral palsy patients by investigating changes in gait temporal spatial parameters. As the subjects, 15 spastic bilateral cerebral palsy patients participated in this study. Temporal spatial parameters of gait were measured using GAITRite system under three gait conditions. Bare foot gait, gait in shoes, and gait in insoles for postural correction were conducted. In order to look at differences in temporal spatial parameters according to three gait conditions, repeated one way analysis of variance was conducted. As post hoc test, Bonferroni was conducted. A significant level was set at ${\alpha}=.05$. According to the result of this study, gait velocity, cadence, step length, stride length of the left lower extremity significantly changed. When the subjects put on customized insoles for postural correction, the effect was greatest. There were no significant changes in stance time, single support time, double support time, swing % of gait, and stance % of cycle. Therefore, gait with insoles for postural correction positively influenced functional gait improvement and will be able to be usefully employed for spastic cerebral palsy children as one of gait assistance devices.
Purpose: Few studies have addressed the effect of diurnal circadian rhythms on postural stability, and thus the aim of the present study was to examine circadian effects on static and dynamic postural stability in young adults. Methods: Twenty-four subjects (9 men, 11 women: age=$22.20{\pm}1.77$, height=$167.20{\pm}10.47$, weight=$59.85{\pm}10.66$) from a university community volunteered for this study. Static and dynamic balance testing, which recorded using a Good Balance system (Good Balance, Metitur Ltd, Finland) was conducted at 9:00, 13:00, and 17:00 hours on two consecutive days, and the sequencing of static and dynamic balance tests were randomized. Results were analyzed using the non-parametric one-way repeated Friedman test in SPSS version 18.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), and variable found to be significant were subjected to Wilcoxon post hoc testing. Results: Static and dynamic balance showed significant difference at the three times assessments (test at 9:00, 13:00, and 17:00) during circadian. In the post hoc test of static (anteroposterior distance, mediolateral distance and COP (center of pressure) velocity) and dynamic balance (performance time), 13:00 was the longer and faster than 9:00. Conclusion: These results indicated that control of postural balance is influenced by diurnal circadian rhythms, and confirm that control of postural balance is more effective and better performance in the 09:00 hours than 13:00 hours or 17:00 hours.

Human postural responses appeared to have stereotyped modality, such as ankle mode, knee mode and hip mode in response to various perturbations. We examined whether human postural control gain of full-state feedback could be decoupled along with the eigenvector. To verify the model, postural responses subjected to fast backward perturbation were used. Upright posture was modeled as 3-segment inverted pendulum incorporated with feedback control, and joint torques were calculated using inverse dynamics. Postural modalities such as ankle, knee and hip mode were obtained from eigenvectors of biomechanical model. As oppose to the full-state feedback control, independent eigenvector control assumes that modal control input is determined by the linear combination of corresponding modality. We used optimization method to obtain and compare the feedback gains for both independent eigenvector control and full-state feedback control. As a result, we found that simulation result of eigenvector feedback was not competitive in comparison with that of full-state feedback control. This implies that the CNS would make use of full-state body information to generate compensative joint torques.

This paper proposes a somatosensory stimulation system for the improvement of postural stability using vibration as somatosensory stimulation. This system consists of vibratory stimulation and postural response measurement. To evaluate this system, the center of pressure(COP) was closely observed in turn with simultaneous or separate mechanical vibratory stimulations to flexor ankle muscles (tibialis anterior, triceps surae) and two plantar zones on both feet while standing on a stable and an unstable support. The simultaneous vibratory stimulations cleared influenced postural stability and the effects of vibrations were higher with the unstable support. In separate vibratory stimulations, the extent of the COP sway reduced when the direction of the vibratory stimulations and that of the inclination of body coincided for flexor ankle muscle stimulations. In the contrary, the extent of the COP sway increased when the direction of the stimulations and that of body inclination coincided for plantar zone stimulations. These results can be useful for the development of rehabilitation systems that utilizes somatosensory inputs for postural balance.
Purposes: The purposes of this study were to identify the level of knowledge of good posture and postural habits among elementary school children and to identify the relationship between knowledge of good posture and postural habits. Method: A descriptive correlational study was conducted. The participants were 507 elementary school children in Jangheung County. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation were used for data analysis. Results: The percentage of correct answer for the knowledge test was 65.83%. Postural habits were not good. Although the strength of correlation was low, there is a statistically significant positive correlation between knowledge and postural habits. Not only school health nurses but also class teachers and parents played important roles in spinal health education. Educational needs for spinal health are high. Conclusion: Although more research in this area is warranted, there is a pressing need for interventions aimed at developing healthy habits that promote postural hygiene among elementary school children. Development and evaluation of back education programs in elementary school is necessary.

Background: Injury or pain in the neck can affect proprioception. People who have a reduced proprioception are easily exposed to induce injury or pain. The aim of this study was to examine the reduced proprioception among people who had lateral flexion postural habit of neck in a sitting position. Methods: Twenty subjects with lateral flexion postural habit were compared with a matched control group. Relocation errors in 30 degree rotation to the right were measured three times with and without visual information randomly. Results: Relocation errors were higher in the lateral flexion postural group than the control group with (p<.01) and without (p<.005) the visual information. Visual information didn't affect the cervical relocation errors in the abnormal and control groups. Repetition is increased the relocation errors with (p<.01) and without (p<.001) visual information. Conclusions: The results support the hypothesis that subjects with lateral flexion postural habit have incorrect perception of their head position. It is necessary to realize the possibility of injury or pain found among people with lateral flexion postural habit.
