The Strategical Research on the Cooperation between Ports and Shipping lines

  • In the light of necessary analysis on the cooperation and development between ports and shipping line, and the characteristic of cooperation between international ports and shipping lines, the article analyses the operating strategies in actual shipping lines benefits to the cooperation between ports and shipping lines. After all-round analysis on the cooperation and development between ports and shipping lines, the author presents the running model of ports and shipping lines in Far East, which is the integration of operation between ports and shipping lines (namely integration of logistics service network).   • China has achieved rapid economic growth in the late 1970s with economic reform and open-door policy. China's economic growth began initially in the eastern coastal areas and from the 2000s expanded to the western and northeastern regions where the economy was relatively underdeveloped. In particular, in 2013 'One-Belt One Road' initiative proposed by Xi Jinping, the current General Secretary of the Communist Party of China is not only a key strategy for China's advancement into the world and also provides important opportunities for the development of these backward regions. Inland Port is the inland logistics hub and plays a crucial role in enhancing access to maritime ports as well as access to adjacent inland countries. Therefore, a number of inland ports have been developed and operated in order to enter into overseas markets and secure resources in the northeastern and western regions of China. This study aims to examine the role and development of inland port in 'One-Belt One Road' scheme. In conclusion, 'One-Belt One Road' will further increase the role of inland port, and in response, the development of inland port will play a pivotal role in one belt one road initiative. In this respect, Korean companies need to consider plans to participate in the development and operation of inland ports in China, which would provide opportunities to spread Northern markets including China, Russia, Central Asia, Eastern Europe.

A Study on the Revitalization of Container Cargoes in Donghae Port Using IPA Technique (IPA기법을 활용한 동해항 컨테이너 활성화 강화 방안에 관한 연구)

  • It is necessary to develop a bridgehead port for trading with northern countries to promote trade through the East Sea because the East Sea Rim economic bloc around the Northeast Asia including South Korea, China, Russia, Japan, and North Korea has a high growth potential in the future. Therefore, this study aims to suggest a strategic direction to enhance the competitiveness of Donghae Port through reinforcement of container cargoes by conducting Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) for stakeholders of Donghae Port. The analysis results suggest that it is necessary to improve the five evaluation factors: attractiveness of container and bulk volumes, appropriate ratio of export/import container quantities, frequency of vessel entry and diversity of sea routes, convenience of complex linked transportation, and competitiveness of cargo handling equipment. The implications of this study are as follows. First, it is necessary to continuously research the current status of container and bulk cargo volumes of the port and ways to increase the absolute cargo volume. Second, we need to consider realistic alternatives to improve the ratio of export/import container quantities. Third, in terms of network, we should establish a service improvement plan to increase the frequency of port calls and the diversity of sea routes. Furthermore, incentives should be provided to increase the trade volume of Donghae Port through strengthened complex linked transportation function. Finally, it is urgently necessary to provide investment support for container handling equipment as an essential requirement for the activation of the container cargoes in Donghae Port.

An Analysis of Major Railway in Eurasia and Characteristics of China's Rail Network (유라시아의 주요 철도노선과 중국 철도 네트워크의 특징 분석 - TAR, TEN-T, TRACECA, GMS를 중심으로 -)

  • While many countries are implementing various policies regarding the logistics network in Eurasia, China has presented "the Belt and Road" Initiative, a development strategy that focuses on connectivity and close cooperation between China and Eurasia. With more than 60 countries participating in the project, China is expected to have a major influence on logistical infrastructure development in Eurasia. This study analyzed the railway stations network using social network analysis (SNA) methodology. We collected data from major railway lines in Eurasia (TAR, TEN-T, TRACECA, GMS) and established a network of 994 railway stations in 65 countries. This study presented the general characteristics of major railway stations from the perspective of SNA and compared the Chinese network with Eurasian networks. To review the railway networks in China and Eurasia, the top 30 stations were selected based on degree centrality and betweenness centrality. Top "degree centrality" stations included Bangkok (Thailand), Tbilisi (Georgia), Baku (Azerbaijan), Kunming (China), and Bucharest (Romania). Top "betweenness centrality" stations were Baku and Alyat (Azerbaijan), Baoji and Turpan (China), Qarshi (Uzbekistan), and Kas (Turkey). In China, Kunming, Nanning, and Gejiu stations have higher degree centrality while betweenness centrality was higher in Baoji, Kunming, and Lanzhou stations. "The Belt and Road" project advocated by China envisions expansion of transportation infrastructure connections throughout Eurasia, but more emphasis is likely to be placed on connectivity that benefits China. In this regard, studies on key bases of international logistics need to consider relative significance within the Chinese network.

  • For a long time, genetic algorithms have been recognized as a new method to solve difficult and complex problems and the performance of genetic algorithms depends on genetic operators, especially crossover operator. Various problems like the traveling salesman problem, the transportation problem or the job shop problem, in logistics engineering can be modeled as a sequencing problem This paper proposes modified genetic crossover operators to be used at various sequencing problems and uses the traveling salesman problem to be applied to a real world problem like the delivery problem and the vehicle routing problem as a benchmark problem Because the proposed operators use parental information as well as network information, they could show better efficiency in performance and computation time than conventional operators.

Distribution Channel Performance Measurement: Valid Measures From Customers' Perspective

  • This paper is structured into three main parts and a conclusion. The main section provide definitions of efficiency, effectiveness and performance in terms of the distribution channel, followed by a review of related performance measurement, before discussing difficulties of measurement. According to the theoretical approach, it appears that key theroretical issues are centered around customer service, logistics excellence, time compression, the use of IT, and a move towards integrated logistics. The empirical approach shows that in the past, various financial performance indicators were regarded as relevant management information. However, today, management needs additional performance indicators. Therefore, external assessments of effectiveness must be performed to measure customers' satisfaction with the physical flow of product through the distribution channel network. So, what is needed is to take previous normative and explorative research and progress through a framework by developing valid measures of distribution channel's effectiveness and efficiency, and identifying research methodologies suited to the data collection requirements.

  • Purpose of this study is to define competitiveness and attribution factors of Busan port on attracting high value added business such as transshipment cargo. Research finds condition to become optimal transshipment port comprises both internal and external circumstances. As for the internal circumstance, scale and location of the distripark as well as port facilities and the rates, for the external circumstance, international network and information technology on logistics managements are providing positive effects. Optimal plans to attract transshipment cargo should include, first, development of total logistics management system from port entry to unloading, transportation, processing, loading to departure. Second, assign port as free trade zone under customs law to attract foreign investment and goods traffic through tax exemption. Third, unless it is illegal, government needs to grant substantial freedom to shift capital for the foreign investors which will lead increase in cargo traffic and foreign investment.

Knowledge Acquisition in the Global Strategic Alliance Network

  • This paper aims to empirically examine how shipping companies can effectively acquire knowledge from their strategic alliance partners. This paper adopts cooperative network embeddedness mechanism, such as network density and tie closeness, as a channel through which to acquire more knowledge for shipping participants within a strategic alliance network. This study also examines the moderating role of competition between alliance partners in reinforcing the effectiveness of the cooperative relationships on the knowledge acquisition. Based on the literature, hypotheses to predict the aforementioned associations between cooperative network embeddedness and knowledge acquisition and the moderating role of competition in facilitating that association are established. A quantitative research method using survey data conducted in the Korean shipping industry was employed in order to empirically test the presented hypotheses. The results show that if players in a shipping alliance network are embedded in a dense network and have close relationships with their alliance partners, this helps to facilitate a greater degree of knowledge acquisition from the partners; and the impact of network density on the knowledge acquisition would be intensified with the higher level of competition between shipping companies.

Forecasting Cargo Traffic of Zarubino Port with O/Ds of Jilin Sheng in China (중국 지린성 대상의 자루비노항 경유물동량 전망)

  • Recently, master plan on the Far East three provinces in China as well as the Russian Far East coupling with 'Eurasia Initiatives' of our government is doubling its importance. It should take advantage of Zarubino port for the hub of Eurasia Logistics Network. This study forecasts the volume demand and whether the expected items of cargo traffic of Zarubino port with O/Ds for the region including the Far East three provinces in China. Input data and the existing basic unit of Korea were utilized in order to overcome the absence of the relevant information to the region. It was derived by them confined to the industrial complex facility in Jilin Sheng on behalf of the Far East three provinces in China as a pilot study. Suitable for the transport sector as a basis for traditional traffic demand, four-step method for estimating the proposed modifications, complementing methodologies. This study is determined that the contribution to the implications on the region's logistics policies of our government has a commitment with raising awareness of the region's Logistics system.

A Review for Development Strategy of Gyeongin Port (경인항의 발전 전략에 대한 소고)

  • As competition in domestic and overseas ports intensify, new and small domestic ports are realizing certain limitations to independently secure competitiveness. This study collected data over 60 months with five modifications for container and general cargo volume around Gyeongin Port. Short-period (12 months) cargo volume was forecasted, which revealed the need for a middle-to-long-term development plan. First, the hinterland logistics complex of Gyeongin Port is expected to contribute to the coastal maritime facility through the quasi-public system for fishery product transportation and passenger services. It proposes to achieve this by opening channels to and from China for precision machinery, home network systems, LEDs, and machine industry items. second, specializing the ultra-light cargo transport route, and connecting the coastal island areas of the 5 West Sea Islands to Ara Waterway (Integrated Fishery Product Center of the 5 West Sea Islands). Third, on the basis of organic cooperation of government? local government ? port, the incentive and pre-circular support system would be required, and lastly, it shall carry out the adjustment of functions in nearby ports and specialization strategy simultaneously through the integrated operation of the ports in the capital areas.
