  • The current-voltage characteristics at SrO${\cdot}6Fe_{2}O_{3}$ electronic ceramics interfaces have been studied using cyclic voltammetric methods. The symmetrical and stable cyclic voltammograms, which indicate the same anodic and cathodic process, are obtained on the whole experiments. The approximate saturation current is 50$\mu$A but the value depends on the experimental processes of the electrode specimens. The current-voltage characteristics of SrO${\cdot}6Fe_{2}O_{3}$ electronic ceramics in dilute aqueous electrolytes or double deionized water are determined by the water adsorption process and the interconnected porosity effect. On the other hand, the current-voltage characteristics in relatively concentrate aqueous electrolytes are determined by the ionic adsorption process and the related electrical double layers. The SrO${\cdot}6Fe_{2}O_{3}$ electronic ceramics can be directly used as an electrochemically stabled resistor, electrode or a humidity sensor.

  • The effects of composition ratios and sintering conditions in Co1-xMgxO ceramics on the sintering characteristics, electrical properties and oxygen sensing characteristics were investigated. In the same sintering conditions, porosity decreased with increase of MgO contents. The relationshiop of temperature and resistance in Co1-xMgxO ceramics showed NTC(negative temperature coefficient) characteristics at the temperature range from $700^{\circ}C$ to 1,10$0^{\circ}C$. In the case of pure CoO, however, the PTC(positive temperature coefficient) characteristics were shown over about 90$0^{\circ}C$. The electrical conductivity of Co1-xMgxO ceramics decreased proportionally with decrease of oxygen partial pressure at the range from 1 to 10-4(atm). Particularly, Co0.5Mg0.5O ceramics showed the highest sensitivity to oxygen gas.

  • Two processing routes (i.e., the gel casting and polymer preform routes) using polymer beads were studied to fabricate porous ceramics with a cellular structure. The gel casting route, comprising the gel casting of a ceramic slurry mixed with polymer beads, was found to be inadequate to produce porous ceramic bodies with a interconnected pore structure, due to complete coating of the slurry on the polymer beads, which left just isolated pores in the final sintered bodies. The polymer preform route, involving the infiltration of a polymer beads preform with the ceramic slurry, successfully produced porous ceramics with a highly interconnected network of spherical pores. The pore size of 250-300 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was demonstrated and the porosity ranged from 82 to 86%. This process is advantageous to control the pore size because it is determined by the sizes of polymer beads used. Another feature is the avoidance of hollow skeleton, giving a high strength.

  • The purpose of our study was to develop the fabrication method of porous diatomite ceramics with a porosity gradient by centrifugal molding. The processing variables of centrifugal molding were derived from Stoke's law of sedimentation, which were the radius of the particles, the acceleration due to centrifugal molding and the dynamic viscosity of the slurry. And these could be controlled by ball-milling conditions, centrifugal conditions, and the addition of methyl cellulose, respectively. The effects of processing conditions on the gradient pore structure of diatomite were investigated by particle size analysis, scanning electron microscope, and mercury porosimeter.

  • In order to prepare the porous hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics with different porosity, interconnectivity, mechanical properties, surface chemistry and tissue response, several methods have been developed. Of the different forms of Porous HA ceramics which were prepared by various methods, only the coralline HA has undergone major clinical applications in orthopaedic, maxillofacial and ophthalmic surgery. In this study, totally synthetic macroporous HA ceramics with various pore size distribution were prepared. It is shown that the new reticulate HA ceramics, comprised of interconnected voids surmunded by a web of ceramic, have a morphology which mimics that of human trabecular bone.

  • The effects of Tio$_2$addition on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of alumina ceramics were studied. Bulk density decreased with an increase of the amount of TiO$_2$. Apparent porosity decreased with an increase of the amount of TiO$_2$ up to 7wt%. But beyond 9wt% of TiO$_2$powders, apparent porosity increased. In the compression test, the modulus increased with an increase of the amount of TiO$_2$addition. In the three point bending test, the stress at yield decreased with an increase of the amount of TiO$_2$ addition. The addition. The addition of TiO$_2$ promoted the grain growth of alumina ceramics.

  • The importance of porous ceramics has been increasingly recognized and adequate strength of porous ceramics is now required for structural applications. Porosities of porous ceramics act as flaws in inner volume and outer surface which result in severe strength degradation. The effect of pore structure, however, on strength and reliability of porous ceramics has not been clearly understood. We investigate the relationship between pore structure and mechanical properties using a sphere indentation on bilayer structure, porous ceramic top layer with soft polymer substrate. Porous alumina and silica were prepared to characterize the isolated pore structure and interconnected pore structure, respectively. The porous ceramic with 1mm thickness were bonded to soft polycarbonate substrate and then fracture strengths were estimated from critical loads for radial cracking of porous ceramics during sphere indentation from top surface. This simple and reproducible technique provides Weibull modulus of strength of porous ceramics with different pore structure. It shows that the porous ceramics with isolated pore structure have higher strength and higher Weibull modulus as well, than those with interconnected pore structure even with the same porosity.

  • Microsotructure designed porous ceramics of calcium hydroxyapatite $(Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2)$ were prepared by hydrothermal method. The particle size, shape, and the micro-pore size of the porous hydroxyapatite ceramics could becontrolled. The hydroxyapatite was non-stoichiometric apatite with calcium deficient compositions (Ca/P ratio < 1.67). The composition of non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatite ceramics could be controlled from 1.50 to 1.63 in Ca/P ratio. The hydroxyapatite ceramics preparedc at $105^{\circ}C$ under the saturated vapor pressure for 20h were composed of rod-shaped crystals with about 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ in length with the mean aspect ratio of 40. The porous ceramics of calcium deficient hydroxyapatite had about 45% porosity with the inter-connecting pore structure. Porous hydroxyapatite ceramics prepared hydrothermally had the compressive strength of about 10 to 30 MPa. In addition, porous ceramics of $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate ($\beta-Ca_3(PO_4)_2$) were prepared from the calcium deficient hydroxyapatite.

  • The achievement of high gas permeability is a key factor in the development of porous SiC ceramics for applications of hot gas filter, vacuum chuck, and air spindle. However, few reports on the gas permeability of porous SiC ceramics can be found in the literature. In this paper, porous SiC ceramics were fabricated at temperatures ranging from $1600^{\circ}C$ to $1800^{\circ}C$ using the mixing powders of SiC, silicon, carbon and boron as starting materials. In some samples, expanded hollow microspheres as a pore former were used to make a cellular pore structure. It was possible to produce Si bonded SiC ceramics with porosities ranging from 42% to 55%. The maximum bending strength was 58MPa for the carbon content of 0.2 wt% and sintering temperature of $1700^{\circ}C$. The increase of air permeability was accelerated by addition of hollow microsphere as a pore former.
