Study on Recognition of and Preferences for Korean Traditional Seasonal Foods (한국 시절식 인지도 및 선호도 조사 -대구.경북 지역을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of and preferences for traditional seasonal foods in Deagu & Gyeongbuk. According to surveys, females (51.2%) demonstrated a higher preference level than males (48.8%), and that for 'married' subjects was highest. Most subjects were classified as 'nuclear family', and 55.0% lived in apartment housing. The reason they experienced or gained knowledge of Korean seasonal foods was parents, which accounted for 64.4%. Reasons for liking Korean traditional drinks was 'traditional food', which scored the highest at 62.8%, followed by 'seasonal food' at 30.4%. The most common reason for disliking Korean drinks was 'lack of information'. The perception of and preferences for seasonal foods were 'rice cake soup', which scored the highest (4.85 points), followed by 'Ginseng chicken soup' (4.70 points). As a result, popularization of traditional seasonal food was based on three factors: modernization, simplicity, and awareness, which significantly influence the preference for Korean traditional seasonal foods.

A Study on the Time-periodic Characteristics of Multi-Family Housing in Cheongju (청주지역 공동주택의 시기별 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The evolution of multi-family housing in Cheongju can be divided by four stages which are a introduction period from 1972 to 1980, a popularization period from 1981 to 1989, a expansion period from 1990 to 1997, and a stagnation period after 1998. In the introduction period, the multi-family housings were mainly low-rise buildings because a government policy which focused on extension of the apartments for the low-income influenced multi-family housing constructions. During the popularization period, the multi-family housings were still low-rise but houses in various sizes were introduced. That was because the Housing Site Developments were started and private companies' participations followed them increasingly. As a result of vigorous participations of private companies and massive developments of housing sites, the multi-family housings in the expansion period started to show constructions of complex and trends of high density and high rising. Finally, in the stagnation period, a rate of the supply of the small houses, whose size was below $60m^2$ of exclusive, area was increased and extreme high-rise apartments emerged. High rising and density were the mainstream of the construction concepts. During this period, the growth of multi-family housing marked low. The reason was that a downturn in economy led private companies to shrink their constructions.

  • Moxa cautery has long been used(among the public) due to its widespread efficacy with few side effects, and is still in use for a variety of purposes. However, conventional indirect moxa cautery accompanied with some problems such as smoke from its combustion and ashes which are difficult to clean. As parts of effects to deal with such problems, this research conducted a survey while referring to a variety of relevant documents. In the survey, 80% of respondents said that their current moxa tools are inconvenient to use. Many of them pointed out smoke, hot temperature problem, and the difficulty of fixing the tool as major sources of inconveniences in using moxa cautery.

  • Diverse researches such as referring to classical literature for liberal arts courses, transformation of classical literature into cultural content and understanding classical literature through digital media have been engaged in an effort to spread the diachronic value of classical literature to the public in general, which should be based on clear understanding of authorship of classical literature. Thus this study aims to design ontology in order to establish knowledge structure of classical literature. For this purpose, the BIBFRAME model and OWL have been utilized while a variety of classical literature and related studies have been analyzed. This led to 19 classes of Work, Instance, Authority, and Annotation, instance, each of which has been provided with property and indexing examples. The classical literature ontology designed through this study is expected to serve as the foundation for development of a classical literature system in future.

  • The emotional interface is essential technology for the robot to provide the proper service to the user. In this research, we developed emotional components for the service robot such as a neural network based facial expression recognizer, emotion expression technologies based on 3D graphical face expression and joints movements, considering a user's reaction, behavior selection technology for emotion expression. We used our humanoid robots, AMI and AMIET as the test-beds of our emotional interface. We researched on the emotional interaction between a service robot and a user by integrating the developed technologies. Emotional interface technology for the service robot, enhance the performance of friendly interaction to the service robot, to increase the diversity of the service and the value-added of the robot for human. and it elevates the market growth and also contribute to the popularization of the robot. The emotional interface technology can enhance the performance of friendly interaction of the service robot. Bi-dimensional Empirical Mode Decomposition Algorithm Based on Particle Swarm-Fractal Interpolation

  • Performance of the interpolation algorithm used in the technique of bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition directly affects its popularization and application, so that the researchers pay more attention to the algorithm reasonable, accurate and fast. However, it has been a lack of an adaptive interpolation algorithm that is relatively satisfactory for the bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) and is derived from the image characteristics. In view of this, this paper proposes an image interpolation algorithm based on the particle swarm and fractal. Its procedure includes: to analyze the given image by using the fractal brown function, to pick up the feature quantity from the image, and then to operate the adaptive image interpolation in terms of the obtained feature quantity. All parameters involved in the interpolation process are determined by using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. The presented interpolation algorithm can solve those problems of low efficiency and poor precision in the interpolation operation of bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition and can also result in accurate and reliable bi-dimensional intrinsic modal functions with higher speed in the decomposition of the image. It lays the foundation for the further popularization and application of the bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition algorithm.

Science Popularizing Mechanism of a Science Magazine in terms of the Linguistic Features of Earth Science Articles in 'Science Donga' ('과학동아' 지구과학 기사의 언어적 특성으로 본 과학 잡지의 과학 대중화 기제)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate how a science magazine played a role in filling the gap between scientists and the general public, and how it contributed to science popularization. We analyzed the linguistic features of the texts used in a science magazine. We used 12 articles (six written by journalists, and six written by scientists) from the Science Donga. Register analysis was conducted in order to define the linguistic features of the texts in terms of ideational meaning, interpersonal meaning and, textual meaning. Results of this study are as follows: (1) the articles written by journalists used a higher mental and verbal processes in which the conversations and thoughts of scientists were expressed. (2) Human agents were relatively explicit in the journalists' articles. However, they were implicit or omitted in the articles of scientists. (3) Interrogative sentences and inclusive imperative sentences, and even omissions were frequently found in the journalists' articles whereas scientists' articles mainly used declarative statements. (4) The clause density of journalist' articles and scientists' were similarly lower than that of science textbooks. (5) The information structure revealed by the patterns of Theme and Rheme that the journalists' articles used in science magazines was simpler than that of science textbooks, while the structure of scientists' articles was more complex than that of journalists'. Based on the linguistic features of the texts used in science magazines, we found that a science magazine contributes to science popularization in two faces: One is in that the articles of journalists present science contents in a way that the readers can follow with ease and feel well-acquainted. The other is that the modified articles of scientists help the general public get familiar with the culuture of science in terms of use of science language.

Science Communication as a Practice of Science Culture (과학커뮤니케이션: 과학문화의 실행(Practice))

  • What are the differences between science communication and science culture? This paper discusses the relationship between 'science communication' and 'science culture', with a consideration of recent activities and endeavours aiming public's understanding of science. For this, it starts with the outcomes and significance of the 9th International Conference on Public Communication of Science and Technology(PCST-9), with a theme of "Scientific Culture for Global Citizenship", held in Seoul May, 2006. Then, it discusses 'Public Understanding of Science(PUS)' to which the PCST network movement is linked, in comparison with 'Popularization of Science(PS)' and 'Science and Society(S&S)'. While PS was one directional movement conveying scientific knowledge to the public, PUS appeared from 1980s was an intentional effort for activating science communication through mass media. Whereas, a recent S&S movement emphasizes dialogue between science and society. And it then introduces theoretical as well as functional definitions of 'science culture' particulary in Korean and explains how the concept of science communication has considerably expanded since 2002. From this, it is finally argued that science communication needs be redefined as a practice of science culture.

  • An overview of 30 feet sailing yacht design is presented. with an emphasis on the factors contributing to start-up Popularization . After prescribing the configurations of the purposed yacht. the design of the hull form with a rudder and a keel, are schematically described. Also the determinations of the dimensions of the sail and rig are performed.
