  • Novel unsaturated polyester composites with PAN-based nanofiber, stabilized PAN nanofiber, and carbonized nanofiber webs have been fabricated, respectively, and the effects of the nanofiber web content on their electrical resistivity, the thermal stability, dynamic storage modulus, and fracture surfaces were studied. The result demonstrated that the introduction of just one single layer (which is corresponding to 2 wt.%) of the carbonized nanofiber web to unsaturated polyester resin (UPE) could contribute to reducing markedly the electrical resistivity of the resin reflecting the percolation threshold, to improving the storage modulus, and to increasing the thermal stability above $350^{\circ}C$. The effect on decreasing the resistivity and increasing the modulus was the greatest at the carbonized PAN nanofiber web content of 8 wt.%, particularly showing that the storage modulus was increased about 257~283% in the measuring temperature range of $-25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$. The result also exhibited that the carbonized PAN nanofibers were distributed uniformly and compactly in the unsaturated polyester, connecting the matrix three-dimensionally through the thickness direction of each specimen. It seemed that such the fiber distribution played a role in reducing the electrical resistivity as well as in improving the dynamic storage modulus.

  • A 3D printed metal part and thermal plastic polymer part were joined by direct laser irradiation. The 3D metal part was fabricated by using DED(Direct Energy Deposition) with STS316 material. The experiment was carried out through no patterned metal surface, 3D metal printed surface and micro laser patterned surface. The most secure joining quality was obtained at the laser micro patterned surface specimen and the counterparts of polymers were PLA and PE based thermo plastics. The applied laser power was 350Watt and the distance of patterns was maintained at $150{\mu}m$. The laser line width was optimized at $450{\mu}m$ and the laser micro pattern depth was $180{\mu}m$ for the best joining quality. Based on the result analysis, the possibility of laser material joining for metal to polymer was proposed and multi-material joining will be possible in 3D laser direct material fabrication.

  • Filler, popularly used in the polymer materials, was dispersed randomly and irregularly. For the study of dispersed behavior, the specimen which have two particles in polystyrene was prepared. And the tensile strength, modulus and SEM picture were measured. When the distance between particles increased, the tensile strength and modulus increased, but particle size did not affect the values. And when the am-bient temperature increased, the tensile strength and modulus decreased, but the distance did not affect the tensile strength and modulus.

  • This paper presents tribological results of the screw materials, which include the conventional screw and newly developed one. The tribotreated screw is manufactured by applying the polymer power to the heat treated surface of the screw. The injection pressure which is developed between the screw and the cylinder has been applied to the rubbing surface of the specimen in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The measured results show that the friction coefficient and wear rate of a tribotreated screw are low compared to the conventional one.

  • Spherical atomizing reduction steel slag was prepared by atomizing technology using reduction steel slag (ladle furnace slag, LFS) generated from steel industry. In order to develop the mass-recycling technology of atomizing reduction steel slag, polymer concrete composite was prepared using spherical atomizing reduction steel slag instead of fine aggregate (river sand) and coarse aggregate (crushed aggregate), depending on the grain size. Different polymer concrete specimens were prepared with the various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag in order to investigate the characteristics of polymer concrete composite. Results showed that compressive strengths of polymer concrete specimens decreased with the increase of replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag, but flexural strengths of the specimens showed a maximum strength at the 50% of replacement ratios of atomizing reduction steel slag. It was concluded that addition ratio of polymer binder, which affect greatly on the prime cost of production of polymer concrete, could be reduced by maximum 18.2 vol% because the workability of the polymer concrete was remarkably improved by using the atomizing reduction steel slag. However, further study is required because the mechanical strength of the specimen using atomizing reduction steel slag was greatly reduced in hot water resistance test.

  • Melt blends of copolyesterethylene(CPEE) and ethylene vinylacetate copolymer(EVA) with 15% vinylacetate content were prepared in the ratio of 0 to 100% CPEE with 10% interval for the purpose of obtaining useful biodegradable polymer system. Miscibility behavior of melt blend samples has been studied by observing the melting temperature change and cold crystallization temperature with differential scanning calorimetry. From the results of thermal analysis, it was shown that each 10% blend composition of CPEE and EVA had the partially miscibility. Useful compatibility has been observed in all blend composition except the samples of 50~80 % CPEE composition from the mechanical property study. Compatibility of these blend has been also observed with scanning electron microscopy. Biodegradability of CPEE/EVA blends has been evaluated by observing the change of specimen with Image analyzer before and after the inoculation with specific microorganism.

  • Mechanical characteristics and chemical resistance have been investigated for PC/PBT blends. The changes in mechanical performance of PC/PBT blends was monitored during the treatment with both the PC thinner and general-purpose thinner to figure out the chemical resistance. The PC thinner greatly affected the mechanical properties of PC/PBT blends compared with general-purpose thinner. In the case of PC thinner treatment, the mechanical performance was improved with increased PC content at lower PC content ranges, say below 50%. However the mechanical performance was dropped rapidly at higher PC content ranges due to poor chemical resistance of PC. Transparent pure PC specimen became opaque after chemical treatment with PC thinner, and this can be interpreted by solvent-induced crystallization.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate experimentally the flexural behavior, capacity and validity of existing regulation of net tensile strain in lightweight concrete beams and polymer modified lightweight concrete beams. One normal weight concrete beam and four lightweight concrete beams, three polymer modified lightweight concrete beams were constructed as same figure and attempted to evaluate the difference of strength and ductility in specimens of different net tensile strain in extreme tension steel. Test results are indicated in terms of load-deflection behavior and ductility index. As the value of net tensile strain increased, the flexural strength and stiffness of specimen decreased but ductility index increased in both of lightweight concrete beams and polymer modified lightweight concrete beams. It is considered that to achieve similar ductility index of normal weight concrete, net tensile strain in extreme tension steel should exceed 0.005 for lightweight concrete beam and polymer modified lightweight concrete beam.

  • ZnAl-LDH(layered double hydroxide) (Zn:Al=2:1 mole ratio) modified with stearic acid (SA) or oleic acid (OA) was synthesized by a coprecipitation method and compounded to SAN polymer at various contents. All the SAN composites were manufactured by a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and subsequently injection molded into several specimen. Morphology, transparency, and thermal resistance of these composites were evaluated by TEM, XRD(X-ray diffractometry), UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. SAN nanocomposites containing OA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH showed better optical transmittance than SAN nanocomposites containing SA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH. All the SAN nanocomposites containing OA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH or SA-$Zn_2Al$ LDH exhibited improvement of thermal resistance at second stage of thermal oxidation. These results were explained by the fact that the interaction between organic modifier and polymer performed an important role in the property improvement of polymer nanocomposites.

  • Polymer-modified cement is the composite material made by partially replacing and strengthening the cement hydrate binders of conventional mortar with polymeric modifiers such as polymer latexes and redispersible polymeric modifiers. It is known that the addition of polymer to cement mortar leads to improved quality, which would be expected to have a high chemical resistance. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify the improved chemical resistance, such as low permeability and low ion diffusivity, of the polymer-modified cement as a solidification agent for the radwaste. First, polymer-modified cement specimens by latex modification were prepared according to the polymer content from 0% to 30% to select the optimized polymer content. At those specimens, the water-to-cement (W/C) ratio was maintained to 33% and 50% respectively. After the much curing time, the structural integrity of specimens was evaluated through the compressive strength test and the porosity evaluation by the water immersion method. From the results, 10% of the polymer content at 33% of the W/C ratio was shown to have the most improved quality. Finally, the leaching test referredfrom ANS 16.1 for the specimens having the most improved quality was conducted. Dedicated specimens for the leaching test were then mixed with radioisotopes of $^{60}Co$ and $^{137}Cs$ at the specimen preparation.
