  • The addition of different types of polymers such as SBR, VAE, Acrylic, etc. in concrete and mortar leads to an increase in compressive, tensile and bond strength and decrease in permeability of polymer modified mortar (PMM) and concrete (PMC). The improvement in properties such as bond strength and impermeability makes PMM/PMC suitable for use as repair/retrofitting and water proofing material. In the present study effect of addition of fluoropolymer on the strength and permeability properties of mortar has been studied. In the cement mortar different percentages viz. 10, 20 and 30 percent of fluoropolymer by weight of cement was added. It has been observed that on addition of fluoropolymer in mortar the workability of mortar increases. In the present study all specimens were cast keeping the workability constant, i.e., flow value $105{\pm}5mm$, by changing the amount of water content in the mortar suitably. The specimens were cured for two different curing conditions. Firstly, these were cured wet for one day and then cured dry for 27 days. Secondly, specimens were cured wet for 7 days and then cured dry for 21 days. It has been observed that compressive strength and split tensile strength of specimens cured wet for 7 days and then cured dry for 21 days is 7-13 percent and 12-15 percent, respectively, higher than specimens cured one day dry and 27 days wet. The sorptivity of fluoropolymer modified mortar decreases by 88.56% and 91% for curing condtion one and two, respectively. However, It has been observed that on addition of 10 percent fluoropolymer both compressive and tensile strength decreases, but with the increase in percentage addition from 10 to 20 and 30 percent both the strengths starts increasing and becomes equal to that of the control specimen at 30 percent for both the curing conditions. It is further observed that percentage decrease in strength for second curing condition is relatively less as compared to the first curing condition. However, for both the curing conditions chloride ion permeability of polymer modified mortar becomes very low.

  • This study has investigated physical and chemical properties of FRP waste, has manufactured polymer cement mortar using a crushed waste with sand and has evaluated its capability to develop the economical waste recycling technology. The study has investigated tension strength, hardness test and impact test as physical properties and also thermogravimetric characteristics and analyzed infrared spectroscope as chemical properties. Then the study has manufactured polymer cement mortar and has analyzed how the FRP waste fine aggregate replacement ratio has an effect on compression strength. Noticing admixture can complement strength drop occurred by the FRP waste fine aggregate replacement, the study examined an optimum rate of admixture addition and its reaction through electron microscope photos.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the properties by increasing of the adhesion strength of styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex coated powdered rubber in cement mortar. SBR-modified mortar using powdered rubber is also tested as the same method. From the test results, the cement mortar using SBR latex coated powdered rubber have a good mechanical properties compared with that using uncoated powdered rubber. The mechanical properties of SBR-modified mortar using powdered rubber with polymer-cement ratios of 10% are also improved.

  • Nowadays, polymer-cement mortars are widely used in construction field(floorings and pavements, water-proofings, adhesives, repair materials, deck coverings, anti-corrosive linings) Because of excellent performance such as high tensile and flexural strength, waterproofness, excellent adhesion, good durability, improved wear and chemical resistances. This article presents the results of experimental study that investigates the effect of ambient temperature on the strength properties of polymer-modified cement mortar. Results show that when increasing the polymer proportion in mortar on different ambient temperature, the compressive strength and flexural strength are decreased, and also alkali resistance is decreased.

  • Concrete is much more easily damaged by various parameters than by the only one and performance reducing mechanism grows more complicated in that condition. In addition, the factors which really act in concrete structure tend to be activated in turn and the degradation of concrete is very rapidly progressed. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the properties of polymer cement mortars under combined cures. The polymer cement mortars are prepared with various polymer types, polymer-cement ratios and cement-fine aggregate ratio, and tested for compressive and flexural strengths, accelerated carbonation, chloride ion penetration and acid resistance test, and freezing-thawing test. The properties of polymer cement mortars under combined cures is discussed. From the test results, polymer cement mortars have superior strengths compared with plain cement mortar under combined cures. The strengths of polymer cement mortars are markedly increased at curing condition II and V, however strengths are not improved at curing condition I and IV irregardless of polymer types. The carbonation and chloride ion penetration depths of polymer cement mortars tend to decrease in curing conditions, III-C, IV-B, V-A order, and decrease with increasing polymer cement ratios. It is concluded that polymer cement ratio of 10 to 15% are considered optimum for the preparation of such polymer cement mortars.

  • This paper was aimed to evaluate the structural performance of flexural members repaired by polymer cement and epoxy mortar at soffit. Main test variables were repair materials, ratio of reinforcement and additional reinforcing bars. Test results shows that the repaired beams could change flexural capacity by materials and additional reinforcing bars. In polymer cement, the section repaired can carry same load, cracking moment and the flexural stiffness of the monolithic beams with same size. In epoxy mortar, all data were greater than the shotcrete. However, note that epoxy mortar may conduct member into brittle failure mode.

  • In this study, catechol-functionalized chitosan (Cat-Chit), a well-known bioinspired polymer that imitates the basic structures and functions of living organisms and biological materials in nature, was synthesized and combined with cement mortar in various proportions. The compressive strength, tensile strength, drying shrinkage, accelerated carbonation depth, and chloride-ion penetrability of these mixes were then evaluated. In the ultraviolet-visible spectra, a maximum absorption peak appeared at 280 nm, corresponding to catechol conjugation. The sample containing 7.5% Cat-Chit polymer in water (CPW) exhibited the highest compressive strength, and its 28-day compressive strength was ~20.2% higher than that of a control sample with no added polymer. The tensile strength of the samples containing 5% or more CPW was ~2.3-11.5% higher than that of the control sample. Additionally, all the Cat-Chit polymer mixtures exhibited lower carbonation depths than compared to the control sample. The total charge passing through the samples decreased as the amount of CPW increased. Thus, incorporating this polymer effectively improved the mechanical properties, carbonation resistance, and chloride-ion penetration resistance of cement mortar.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of polymer glass transition temperature on mechanical properties of polymer latex-modified mortars in comparison with ordinary cement mortar. The Polymer latex-modified mortars are prepared with 5, 10, 15 and 20% of polymer cement ratio respectively, and properties of modified mortars such as air content, compressive, flexural and tensile strengths are tested. The test results indicate that the types of polymer dispersion and the polymer-cement ratio are very important factors to characterize the properties of polymer-modified mortars, and also the glass transition temperature of polymer dispersions has an important effect on the performance of polymer-modified mortars. The modifying effects of two kinds of polymer dispersion, St/BA-1 and SBR, are evaluated.

  • In this study, the characteristics of polymer-modified mortar which include UM resin, eco-friendly resin, was studied for improving the durability of concrete. UM and cement mortar were mixed with a certain percentage. Eco-friendly UM resin polymer-modified mortar was evaluated by compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, water absorption and chemical resistance experiments. The characteristics of eco-friendly UM resin polymer-modified mortar were evaluated by experiments. Performance of compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were decreasing. On the other hand, performance of flexural strength, water absorption and chemical resistance were increasing. Eco-friendly UM resin polymer-modified mortar reinforced concrete durability performance is excellent.
