  • IEEE 802.11 Point Coordination Function (PCF) mode is defined to support time bounded traffic, such as voice in wireless LANs. The poll scheduling plays an important role in IEEE 802.11 PCF mode operation. This paper proposed a Multicast Polling Scheme (MPC) to increase the performance of wireless LANs. Moreover, we proposed a polling schedule scheme for our proposed multi-poll to serve real-time traffic. The results show that the proposed mechanism is more efficient than the original IEEE 802.11 PCF.

  • This study aims to examine the relation between opinion perception and opinion expression by issue types by analyzing online poll results and respective bulletin boards. To find out how opinion poll results affect the public opinion perception cues and opinion expression through the internet, the study applied a method of content analysis to the online contents provided by Naver.com, one of the most popular portal sites in Korea. A total of four issue types, along with 2,250 messages were chosen for analysis. The study results revealed that internet users perceived opinion atmosphere through the poll results and expressed their opinions depending on the issue types. In case of an issue where majority views are manifested as online poll results, users tended to follow that majority views by retaining their initial opinion. Majority opinion by the poll results held a dominant position in bulletin board. The results partially support Noelle-Neuman(1994)'s spiral of silence theory in the context of computer-mediated communication contrary to the belief that anonymity in the cyberspace tends to encourage participation of minority opinion group. According to the findings, people when they perceive their opinion as that of minority are discouraged to express their views even when they are online.

  • Statistical literacy is a key ability expected of citizens in information-laden societies, and is often revealed as an expected outcome of schooling and as a necessary component of adults' numeracy and literacy. Knowing how important statistical literacy is, the purpose of this research was to measure statistical literacy of adults and secondary mathematics teachers. This study explored the statistical literacy based on the level of understanding in poll results and analyzed the data obtained through semi-structured interviews with 20 secondary mathematics teachers and 20 adults. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained: First, few secondary mathematics teachers and adults correctly recognized the meaning of statistical terms and expressions included in the poll results. Second, 70% of research participants did not reach levels 3 or 4 of statistical literacy levels. Third, the statistical literacy level of secondary mathematical teachers was higher than that of adults.

  • In Korea, bellwether voting places were selected for exit poll based on the past voting results. Sometimes, voting place stratification were used to improve the exit poll performance. The sampled voting places are intended to mirror the general voters of the entire electoral district. But few studies have been done as to which sampling method works better. This study compared the four sampling methods-bellwether voting place sampling method, random sampling method, stratified bellwether sampling method and systematic sampling from ordered voting places method. When we applied the four methods to the 2004 general election data, the systematic sampling from ordered voting places method outperformed the other three sampling method. Also, we found that the additional sampling of voting places over nine contribute little to the accuracy of the estimation.

  • What could be the relation between newspapers' tendency and readers' attitude on a particular affair\ulcorner That is, does newspapers' tendency on a particular affair influence readers' attitude on that matter or vice versa\ulcorner Or do they both influence each other\ulcorner These questions deserve to be answered. Owing to Internet Poll introduced in Korean newspapers from the mid-1990s and popular with newspaper readers (particularly with so called netizens), it becomes possible to grip the readers' attitude on a particular affair. And it is well known that newspapers' tendency on a particular affair is well reflected in the editorials. By analyzing and comparing the relation between newspapers' tendency and readers' attitude through internet poll on a particular affair, we understand whether there is a correlation between them or not.

  • A method for poll analysis using information theory and data visualization is proposed in this paper. Questions of opinion poll consist of a target variable and many explanation variables. The type of explanation variables is either numerical or categorical. In this study, explanation variables of mixed types have been ranked according to the magnitude of their effect on target variable by using mutual information. Likewise, the order of explanation variables has been evaluated using data visualization. This is the first study to quantify the impact of specific explanation variable on the related target variable.

  • A public opinion poll's importance is at this time increasing now. Especially, a news report with a fair and objective execution and investigative reporting Moral Code is very important. But a research on the basis of investigative reporting Moral Code is not yet carried out. In this paper, with the center of a public opinion poll involved in the 17th Presidential Election of Korea, investigative reporting Moral Code has been analyzed measurably how well observed in the Press. Furthermore, it has been compared with findings carried out in the year 2002. Finally, through comparing response rate with actual results acquired in a survey of public opinion, I proposed a response rate acquisition.

  • This paper describes a design scheme of a system that tests or polls from the students at online class. By online test, the teacher can test the pre-knowledge level of the students and know how much students understand the lecture of the class. As the number of test increases, the burden of the preparation of setting question, evaluation of the test, and management of the test results is increased. In this environments, an online test management system make it easy to test and evaluate, and thus it would be a good tool for maintaining and managing the total procedure of the test or poll of the students. For evaluating the design of the system, we made a test system prototype and performed evaluations of the online test system. The online test and evaluation system provides a good tool for testing and evaluation of student's knowledge at the class with easy and fast way.

  • This paper presents a new dynamically adaptable polling scheme for efficient support of real-time traffic over an IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN network. The poll scheduling plays an important role in IEEE 802.11 PCF. However, the current version of the polling list management scheme proposed in the IEEE 802.11 standard is inefficient when a variable number of mobile stations have variable packets to transmit. If Point Coordinator has an exact information on the station status, it is possible to efficiently perform polling. In this paper, we suggest an adaptable polling scheme to meet requirements of the stations. In our scheme, each station transmits packets including a piggyback information to inform that it wants to receive a poll in the next polling duration. Simulation results indicate that our scheme may reduces the packet discard ratio and real-time packet transfer delay.
