Medium Voltage Power Supply with Enhanced Ignition Characteristics for Plasma Torches

  • This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torches. A series resonant half-bridge topology is presented as a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. A plasma torch rated at 3MW, 2kA and having a physical size of 1m is selected to be the high enthalpy source for a waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of a plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of a Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. The circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of the arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the presence of a load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides a high enough ignition voltage, around 5KA, during the ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.

Operation Characteristic of Filtered Vacuum Arc Source for Amorphous Diamond Coating (비정질 다이아몬드 코팅을 위한 자장여과 아크소스의 동작 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The filtered vacuum arc source (FVAS), which is adopted by magnetic filtering methode to remove the macro-particle in vacuum arc plasma, was composed of a torus structure with bending angle of 60 degree. The radius of torus was 266 mm, the radius of plasma duct was 80 mm and the total length was 600 mm. The magnet parts were consisted of one permanent magnet, one magnetic yoke and five solenoid magnets. The plasma duct was electrically isolated from the ground so that a bias voltage could be applied. The baffles inside plasma duct were installed in order to prevent the recoil effect of macro-particles. Graphite was used as the cathode material to coat the amorphic diamond film and its diameter was 80 mm. The amorphic diamond film attracts much attention due to its excellent mechanical, optical and tribological properties suitable for wide range of applications. The effects of solenoid magnet in plasma extraction were studied by computer simulation and experiment using Taguchi's method. The source and extraction magnet affected the arc stabilization. The extraction beam current was maximized with low value of the source magnet current and high value of the filtering magnet current. Optimum deposition condition was obtained when the currents of arc discharge, source, extraction, bending, deflection and outlet magnet were 30 A, 1 A, 3 A, 5 A, and 5 A, respectively.

Non-thermal Plasma for Air Pollution Control Technology (저온 플라즈마 이용 대기환경설비기술)

  • Non-thermal plasma technology for air pollution control, which are NOx, SOx, VOCs, soot, etc., is reviewed. In the early parts of the paper, generation of non-thermal plasma and plasma chemical process are introduced to provide an appropriate plasma condition (electron energy density) for treating air pollutions. Recent results on numerical simulation, optical diagnostics, and gas treatment are provided to characterize an optimal design of plasma generation and plasma chemical process. These data are also helpful to understand unique features of non-thermal plasma process that is achieved with relatively low temperature conditions, i.e. low enthalpy conditions of the treated gas molecules. In the later parts of the paper, several examples of recently developed non-thermal plasma techniques are illustrated, in which technical and economical assessments of the present techniques are provided.

Measurement of Electron Density and Electron-neutral Collision Frequency Using Cutoff Probe Based on the Plasma Reactance Measurement

  • We proposed a new measurement method of cutoff probe using the reactance spectrum of the plasma in cutoff probe system instead of transmission spectrum. The high accurate reactance spectrum of the plasma which is expected in previous circuit simulation of cutoff probe [1] was measured by using the automatic port extension method of the network analyzer. The measured reactance spectrum is good agreement with E/M wave simulation result (CST Microwave Studio). From the analysis of the measured reactance spectrum based on the circuit modeling, not only the electron density but also electron-neutral collision frequency can be simply obtained. The obtained results of electron density and e-n collision frequency were presented and discussed in wide range of experimental conditions, together with comparison result with previous methods (a previous cutoff probe using transmission spectrum and a single langmuir probe).

  • Caffeine has a long history of human consumption but the consumption of caffeine due to caffeinated energy drinks(CEDs) is rapidly growing. Marketing targets of CED sales are children, adolescents and young adults, possibly caffeine-sensitive groups and its effect for them can be significantly different from healthy adults. Caffeine-related toxicities among these groups are growing in number and a number of countries are recognizing severity of caffeine toxicities. Previous research showed prediction of maximal plasma caffeine concentration profiles after the single CED ingestion and the primary aim of this study is to visually predict plasma caffeine concentration after the single and multiple ingestion of standard servings of CED. Based on the population pharmacokinetic model using Monte Carlo simulation, prediction of caffeine concentration leading to caffeine intoxication in the sensitive groups is quantitatively presented and visualized. This research also broadens the perspective by creating and utilizing diverse open science tools including R package, Edison Science App and Shiny apps.

  • In this Part 2, the grain growth processes of $Al_2O_3$ ceramics is numerically simulated using Monte Carlo method (MCM) and finite element method (FEM) and the pore sizes are analyzed. As the green ceramics whose thermal conductivities in high temperatures are generally low are sintered by the plasma heat and are rapidly cooled, the grain growth of the sintered body in the center is different from that in the outer. Also, even in the same sintering temperature, the pore size differs according to the pressing pressure. In order to prove the difference, the temperature distribution of the sintered body was analyzed using the finite element method and then the grain growth process associated with pressing pressures and relative densities was simulated using Monte Carlo method.

  • Electric propulsion has become a cost effective and sound engineering solution for many space applications. The success of SMART-1 and MUSES-C developed by European Space Agency (ESA) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) each proved that even small spacecraft could accomplish planetary mission with electric propulsion systems. A small electric propulsion system which is Hall effect thruster like SMART-1 is under development by SaTReC and GDPL (Glow Discharge Plasma Lab.) in KAIST for the next microsatellite, STSAT-3. To achieve optimized propulsion system, it is very necessary to understand plasma motions of Hall effect thruster. In this paper, we try to approach comprehensive plasma model with the particle simulation complementary to Particle In Cell (PIC) simulation. We think these two different approaches will help experimenters to optimize Hall effect thruster performances.

  • The response of the earth's magnetosphere to the variation of the solar wind parameters and Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has been stud}ed by using a high-resolution, three-dimension magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation when the WIND data of velocity Vx, plasma density, dynamic pressure, By and Bz every 1 minute were used as input. Large electrojet and magnetic storm which occurred on October 21 and 22 are reproduced in the simulation (fig. 1). We have studied the energy transfer and tail reconnect ion in association with geomagnetic storms.

  • In this paper, the development of the LF power supply for dry scrubber is discussed. 1500kW, 100kHz LF power supply is designed and tested. The main power stage is used for the FB PWM inverter with an LC filter in the secondary circuit. The operation characteristics of LF power supply are verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the active clamp ZVS flyback converter for semiconductor plasma etching system. The proposed converter has the characteristics of the good power facter low switching noise and efficiency improvement. The characteristics are verified through simulation results. Furthermore the ringing effect due to output capacitance of the main switch can be eliminated by use of active clamp circuit.
