  • The feeding habits of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus were studied using 126 specimens collected from coastal waters off Taean, Korea from April 2008 to March 2009. The total lengths of P. olivaceus ranged from 16.7 to 40.6 cm. P. olivaceus was a piscivore that consumed mainly fishes. The diet also included small quantities of shrimps, cephalopods, polychaetes and mysids. Although, P. olivaceus mainly consumed fishes of all size classes, some degree of change in diet composition was found; i.e. after fishes, smaller individuals fed more on shrimps, whereas larger individuals consumed more cephalopods.

  • The feeding habits of daggertooth pike conger Muraenesox cinereus were studied using 380 specimens collected in the coastal waters off Goseong, Korea, from June to September, 2011. The M. cinereus ranged from 10.0-23.7 cm in anal length (AL). M. cinereus is a piscivore that consumes mainly fish. Engraulis japonicus was the preferred prey, but its diet also included small numbers of crabs, shrimps, cephalopods, and bivalves. The feeding strategy graphical method revealed that M. cinereus is a specialized feeder with a narrow niche width. All size classes of M. cinereus consumed fish and M. cinereus did not show significant ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. The diet overlap index between size classes was >0.96, indicating high diet similarities. The prey size increased significantly with M. cinereus size.

  • The feeding habits of the blackthroat seaperch Doederleinia berycoides were studied using 650 specimens collected in the Southern Sea of Korea, from January to December, 2005. The size (standard length, SL) of the specimens ranged from 6.3 to 35.2 cm. D. berycoides is a piscivore that consumes mainly teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus, Acropoma japonicum, and Myctophum nitidulum. Of the fish species Engraulis japonicus was the preferred prey. D. berycoides also eats small quantities of shrimps, amphipods, euphausiids, mysids, and crabs. D. berycoides showed ontogenetic changes in its feeding habits. Smaller individuals (5-10 cm SL) fed mainly on shrimp. The proportion of shrimp decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleled the increased consumption of fish. Fish accounted for almost all of the stomach contents of individuals larger than 15 cm SL. Cluster analysis based on the percentage dry weight (%DW) identified two size groups: group A (<15 cm SL) consumed primarily shrimp and fish; and group B (15< cm SL) preyed exclusively on fish. There was little seasonal change in the diet of D. berycoides, but shrimp constituted 41.8% of the summer diet in %W.

The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 12 to 42 cm. Z. faber is a piscivore and consumes mainly teleost fish such as Psenopsis anomala, Trichiurus lepturus and Conger myriaster. Its diet also includes shrimp and cephalopods. Smaller individuals (<25 cm SL) consume shrimp and small fish such as Glossanodon semifasciatus. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease is paralleled by increased consumption of lager fish such as Psenopsis anomala and Trichiurus lepturus. The prey size increases with Z. faber size.

The specimens ranged in fork length (FL) from 23.4-37.5 cm. Chub mackerel is a piscivore and consumes mainly Teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus. Its diet also includes amphipods, crabs, Euphausia, chaetognaths and shrimp. Smaller individuals (<26 cm FL) consume mainly crabs. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleles the increased consumption of fish. The prey size increases with S. japonicus size.

  • The feeding habits of oriental bonito (Sarda orientalis) were studied using 288 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea from January to December 2015. Oriental bonito is pelagic piscivore that consumes mainly fishes especially Engraulis japonicus and Scomber japonicus. Its diet also includes small quantities euphausiids, amphipods and cephalopods. Oriental bonito showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Although fishes were the primary food consumed by all size groups, the ratio of fishes was slightly increased as body size increase. There also was a significant relationships between mean prey number and weight according to size class and season.

  • The feeding habits of Sebastes schlegeli collected from the Tongyeong marine ranching area throughout 2002 were studied. S. schlegeli is a carnivore (piscivore), and consumed mainly fish. Its diet also included a small amount of caridean shrimps, crabs, amphipods, polychaetes, and isopods. The diet of S. schlegeli underwent size-related changes. Small individuals (standard length (SL)<6 cm) fed mainly on fishes, caridean shrimps, and amphipods, and the proportion of fish increased with SL. Large individuals (SL>20 cm) ate fish predominately. The diet of S. schlegeli changes seasonally, and caridean shrimps were consumed mainly from May to July. The dietary breadth index of S. schlegeli varied with SL and season.
