  • A series of experiments was conducted to examine characteristics of a grooved flat-strip heat pipe having multiple heat sources. The inner grooves of the heat pipe have the aspect ratio of 1 to $2.5(0.42{\times}1.05$ mm) whose pitch was 0.6 mm. Four block heaters ($10{\times}20$ mm) were placed in the evaporator section at intervals of 20 mm and six different heating modes were tested. The maximum surface heat flux of 80 $W/cm^2$ was achieved while the operating temperature was kept below $100^{\circ}C$, In the nearest heating mode (from the condenser location), the heat pipe exhibited more stable temperature distribution than the far heating mode where the heaters is located furthest from the condenser.

  • In process of reinforced concrete (RC) box structure. the heat of hydration may cause serious thermal cracking. In order to eliminate hydration heat of mass concrete. this paper reports results of hydration heat control in mass concrete structure using the pulsating heat pipe. There were three RC box molds($1.2{\times}l.8{\times}2.4m^3$) which shows a difference as compared with each other. One was not equipped with pulsating heat pipe. The others were equipped with pulsating heat pipe. All of them were cooled with natural air convection. The pulsating heat pipe was composed of serpentine type copper pipe with 10 turns (outer diameter: 4mm. inner diameter: 2.8mm). The working fluid was R-22 and its charging ratio was 40% by volume. The conditions such as the number of turns. the length and the pitch of the pulsating heat pipe and the size of concrete structure were changed. Based on these experiments, it was confirmed that this construction method using pulsating heat pipe was effective to remove hydration heat of mass concrete structure and thus it was possible to prevent harmful thermal crack and construction Period and costs of concrete structure would be cut down.

  • Numerical investigation has been conducted to figure out flow behavior and pressure drop characteristics of spirally corrugated steel pipe which is widely used in civil, industrial and agricultural field owing to many advantages such as good corrosion resistance and durability, strength, easy and quick installation. Also the poly-ethylene coating spirally corrugated steel pipe has the long life under condition of sea water immerged. In the present study, flow behavior in the spirally corrugated pipe and influence of P/d/sub h/(ratio of wave pitch to hydraulic diameter) to pressure drop are investigated by CFD with various Reynolds number. And also friction factor is estimated by pressure drop obtained by flow analysis. According to computation results, the flow runs spirally up and down along the spiral corrugation in the vicinity of wall, but the effect of spiral corrugation disappears in core region of pipe. As P/d/sub h/ becomes small, more pressure drop occurs in spirally corrugated Pipe. Besides, friction factor augmentation becomes much larger as Re increases. In case of p/d/sub h/=0.38, Pressure drop and friction factor of spirally corrugated pipe are about four times larger than smooth pipe at Re: 1.46×10/sup 6/.

  • The heat transfer characteristics of the rotating heat pipe with a disc evaporator and a grooved condenser have been investigated by measuring temperature distributions of wall and vapor for various thermal inputs and revolutions per minute. The results showed that the heat transfer coefficients of all types are increased with thermal input and revolutions per minute. The heat transfer coefficient of evaporator with groove (pitch=2.5mm depth=1.5mm) is 25.8% higher than that of evaporator without groove at 500RPM, 150W.

  • In this study, the stress and deformation behavior characteristics of a flexible joint for a gas pipe have been analyzed by a finite element method. These characteristic results may investigate the strength safety analysis of a flexible joint, which is composed by a spiral corrugation pipe or a rectangular corrugation model and a plane pipe. The FEM computed results show that an optimized spiral corrugation pipe model is a inclined angle of $4.7^{\circ}$ and a corrugation height of 1.5mm. And also, a rectangular corrugation pipe model of $90^{\circ}$ is recommended in strength safety rather than a spiral corrugation pipe with an inclined angle. Thus, a corrugated pipe for an increased strength safety is to recommend a reduced pitch and curvature radius of an inclined corrugation.

  • The need of geothermal energy is constantly increasing for economical and environmental utilization. Horizontal ground heat exchangers (GHEs) can reduce installation cost and increase efficiency. There are many kinds of GHEs, and it is known that slinky and spiral coil type GHEs show high thermal performance. Therefore, this paper presents experimental results of heat exchange rates in horizontal slinky and spiral coil type GHEs installed in a steel box whose size is $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$. Dried Joomunjin standard sand was filled in a steel box, and thermal response tests (TRTs) were conducted for 30 hours to evaluate heat exchange rates by changing different pitch spaces of horizontal slinky and spiral coil type GHEs. As a result, spiral coil type GHE showed 30~40% higher heat exchange rates per pipe length than horizontal slinky type GHEs. Furthermore, long pitch interval (Pitch/Diameter=1) showed 200~250% higher heat exchange rates per pipe length than short pitch interval (Pitch/Diameter=0.2) in both spiral coil and horizontal slinky type GHEs, respectively.

  • A corrugated pipe is widely used in firefighting equipment and sprinkler pipes because of its elasticity, which is less damaged by deformation and convenient facilities. However, the corrugated shape of the wall results in complex internal turbulent flow, and it is difficult to predict the pressure drop, which is an important design factor for pipe flow. The pressure drop in the corrugated tube is a function of the shape factors of the pipe wall, such as groove height, length, and pitch. Existing studies have only shown a study of pressure drop due to length changes in the case of D-shaped tubes with less than 5 pitch (P) and height (K) of the rectangular grooves in the tube. In this work, we conduct a numerical study of pressure drop for P/Ks with length and height changes of 2.8, 3.5 and 4.67 with Re Numbers of 55,000, 70,000 and 85,000. The pressure drop in the corrugated tube was interpreted to decrease with smaller P/K. We show that the pressure drop is affected by the change in the groove aspect ratio, and the increase in the height of the groove increases the recirculation area, and the larger the Reynolds number, the greater the pressure drop.

  • As the needs of consumer on ride comforts increase and the reduction of road traffic noise tightened step by step, the power unit noise emitted by cars has been reduced. It has been found that tire noise dominates noise produced by the power-train when vehicles are driven at high speeds. Therefore, in these days, tire/pavement noise is concerned. Tire/pavement noise is affected by pavement type and vehicle???s transmission loss. Tire noise mechanism is produced by several mechanisms. The sound of tire can propagate either through the air or through the structure of vehicle. Pattern noise is the result of pressure variations through the air to the interior side of vehicle. Especially, on smooth asphalt the periodicity of tread design, pitch sequence is important factor, which have an influence on the reduction of tire noise.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the effects of thermal and geometric conditions on the performance of indoor heat exchangers with R-410A for Gas Engine Driven Heat Pump (GHP) application and to find the optimum design conditions of indoor heat exchangers by parametric analysis for the key parameters. The key parameters are number of tube row, number of tube pipe, fin pitch and transverse tube pitch. In the air side, moisture out of the humid air condenses on the fin surface while the refrigerant (R-410A) boils inside the smooth tube. Therefore this study uses Log Mean Enthalpy Difference (LMHD) method to analyze the heat transfer from the humid air to the refrigerant. This study determines the heat exchanger size, air side/refrigerant side pressure drop and overall heat transfer coefficient. Optimum design conditions for the key parameters are also determined by the parametric analysis. The results show that number of rows and pipes, fin pitch have significant effect on the heat exchanger size. It is also found that the tube length of the louver fin is $17{\sim}30%$ shorter than that of the plate fin.
