This study was carried out to investigate some mechanical properties for wood rational utilization of heartwood and sapwood in radiata pine according to basic density, ring width and proportion of latewood which were grown in New Zealand. This result were summarized as follow: Heartwood showed 35.78(MPa) of the compression strength parallel to the grain while sapwood showed 42.08(MPa). The modulus of rupture in static bending was higher in sapwood showing 86.12(MPa) than in heartwood 72.99(MPa) Heartwood had 7.38(GPa) for the modulus of elasticity in static bending and sapwood 8.17(GPa). As the basic density and proportion of latewood increased: compression strength parallel to the grain, MOR and MOE in static bending had a tendency to increase. As ring width increased, the mechanical properties decreased.
Alkali-soluble extracts were prepared from medium-sized barks of Radiata pine(Pinus radiata). There are difficulties in the production of extracts with uniform quality and in the preparation of adhesives with suitable viscosity. Ultrafiltration using an Amicon cell was subjected to fractionate extracts according to molecular sizes in order to overcome the above problem. The filtration efficiency was studied by using thin channel filtration systems. Adhesive manufacturing was also examined. Removal of particles greater than 0.45m from the extracts increased both filtration speed (flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. Ultrafiltration with PM 10 membrane was very effective to fractionate and concentrate the extracts. Stiasny precipitates from the filtrates obtained by PM 10 membrane were very lower than that(83%) of the retentates. This ultrafiltration method was efficient for obtaining high yield purified phenolic compounds(mainly polyflavanoids) and thus important for preparing wood adhesives from barks. The extracts were shown excessive high viscosities at the concentrations required for adhesive formulation, but this high viscosity and short gelation time was reduced by lowering pH of the extracts and addition of urea. The highest bonding strength of plywoods(340g/$m^2$ of adhesive spreads) was achieved with adhesive formulated by 100parts of mixed alkali extracts and urea(70/30,w/w), 10parts of p-formaldehyde and 3.5parts of wheat flour at pH 6, and by hot pressing at the conditions of 12kg/$cm^2$ at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes.
This study deals with shear strength test for Pinus densiflora and Pinus radiata treated at above $100^{\circ}C$ by heat steam. Treatment conditions of this experiment were operated at regular intervals of $20^{\circ}C$ at temperatures up to $200^{\circ}C$ for 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes by using the steam-explosion apparatus. It was examined, at high temperatures, degradation of some compounds from wood composition could lead to reduced the shear strength through heat steaming processes and play a large part in the plastic process of solid wood materials. It could be estimated that the shear strength of woods were gradually reduced by heat steaming time. Remarkable reduction of shear strength of woods was observed with increasing steaming temperatures above 10 minutes steaming time. Furthermore, this phenomenon shows a tendency to increase with higher temperatures. Therefore, it was considered that the softening by steaming treatment at high temperatures is necessary for the improvement on the wood processing ability.
To prepare the eco-friendly fire retardant wood, Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla), and Radiata pine (Pinus radiata) were treated with inorganic chemicals, such as sodium silicate, boric acid, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. Different combination and concentration of those chemicals were impregnated by vacuum/pressure treatment methods. The electron-beam treatment was used to increase the chemical penetration into the wood. The fire performance of the fire retardant treated wood was investigated. The penetration of chemicals into the wood was enhanced after electron beam treatment. Ignition time of the treated wood was the most effectively retarded by sodium silicate, ammonium phosphate, and ammonium borate. The most effective chemical combination was found at 50% sodium silicate and 3% ammonium borate, which satisfied flammability criteria for a fire retardant material in the KS F ISO 5660-1 standards.
The mechanical and physical properties of wood are strongly dependent upon the slope of grain. Specially, tensile strength is more severely affected by the slope of grain. Therefore, tension tests were performed on small thin wood samples made from Pinus radiata with varying the slope of grain. Determining the tensile strength for clear thin wood samples the other variabilities associated with material, size, drying, defects, etc were discarded. Slope of grain was measured by the slope of grain indicator and actual slope of grain was also determined by a protractor. Correlation coefficients between machine measured and actual slope of grain for 40 pieces of 2×20 mm, 300 mm long Pinus radiata were 0.84 for wide face measurement. Results also showed that tensile strength and MOE from stress wave tests decreased with increasing the slope of grain. This study did not establish a relationships for tensile strength and MOE from stress wave with slope of grain. However, the trends of MOEs from stress wave test with both slope of grain are agreed well with Hankinson's equation. Predicted tension strength curve by Hankinson's equation was also agreed well with the experimental data over the range from 0 to 13 degrees for slope of grain.
It was investigated the hardness and dimensional stability of heat-compressed wood by compression temperature and time. The surface hardness of heat-compressed wood increased with increasing compression temperature. The lowest hardness value (5.0 N/$mm^2$) was observed in the temperature $70^{\circ}C$ while the highest value (15.6 N/$mm^2$) was obtained in compression temperature $220^{\circ}C$. Dimensional recovery test results showed that fixation of compression set improved with increasing compression temperature. However, the fixation effects were negligible by press time. Contact angle increased with increasing press temperature and time.
This study was estimated the change of color of compressed wood by compression temperature and time. Wood color was measured using a colorimeter and evaluated by the NBS (National Bureau of Standards) unit. As a result, the whiteness decreased with increasing compression temperature. In contrast, redness and yellowness was increased with increasing compression temperature. All of the color difference showed the 'Very Much' by NBS unit. The whiteness decreased with increasing compression time. The redness and yellowness were insignificant effect on compression temperature. In other words, the effect of compression temperature was much greater than compression time in the change of wood color.
Alkali-soluble extracts were prepared from barks of Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis). Siberian larch(Larix gmelineii) and Radiata pine(Pinus radiata) The effect of various factors, such as particle size, liquor ratio, extraction temperature, and reaction time, on the extracts yield was investigated. Particle sizes affected the alkali-soluble extracts; the finer the particle size, the higher extracts and extract efficiency. High temperature and high liquor ratio were more effective. In the range of 0.25% to 1% NaOH concentration, alkali extracts were increased with the increasing alkali concentration. However, extract yields were leveled off above 0.5% alkali concentration. Extractions with NaHCO3 were almost equivalent to those of NaOH extraction. 1% NaOH and 1% NaHCO3 resulted in the highest yields of alkaline extracts. Extracts from Japanese larch were lower than those from Siberian larch and Radiata pine barks. Siberian larch bark was the best raw material for tannin adhesives, because its extractive yield was higher than those of the other barks. Concerning pH of alkaline media during extraction, small increases of the extract yields were resulted at range of pH 7 to pH 9, while a large increases from pH 9.0 to pH 12. This phenomenon is attributed to higher alkalinity.

The Korean sawmills have recently recognized the importance of prevention of fungal discoloration due to increased losses in revenue. Before establishing integrated control strategies of fungal discoloration, more complete knowledge about causal organisms is needed. As a first step, we initiated a through survey of fungi colonizing commercially important softwood(Pinus dens flora, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus radiata) logs and lumber in Korea. In this paper we report results obtained from Japanese red pine(Pinus densiflora) log study. In summer 2000, fungi were isolated from Japanese red pine logs in storage, and identified based on their cultural and morphological characteristics. A total of 595 fungi were isolated, representing 21 genera and 30 species. Mold fungi, mostly Trichoderma species, were the most frequently isolating fungi, representing more than half of all isolates. Dematiaceous fungi represented approximately one fifth of the isolates, and Rhinocladiella atorvirens was the most abundant in all samples. Opiostoma species represented 7% of all isolates from cores planted on malt extract agar(MEA) and the incidence of these species doubled with the addition of streptomycin and cycloheximide to MEA. The results indicate that Japanese red pine sapwood is susceptible to colonization by a variety of fungal species. As a result, control strategies that concentrate on one fungus may have limited success because of interference from competing flora.
Two kinds of chemicals (RNF-3 and RNF-4) with high anti-mold effectiveness against stored fungi causing fungal discoloration was selected from among the six kinds of fluoride-based chemicals in the preceding study. In this study, the anti-mold test using 16 species fungi isolated from the softwood lumbers which were fungal discolored and field test in the sawmill was carried out to prove the feasibility for practical using of selected chemicals. For the isolated fungi, the RNF-3 consist of F and Cu showed high mycelial growth control in the PDA medium and fungicidal effectiveness in the japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and radiata pine (Pinus radiata) when the concentration was 2% or more. However the RNF-4 consist of F only was not effective compared with RNF-3 because of mycelial growth in the PDA medium and wood treated with 2% or more chemical solution. The RNF-3 also showed a strong anti-mold effectiveness because there was no fungal discoloration for the radiata pine boards treated by 2% and 10 min. soaking in the field test. These results mean that RNF-3 can be used as domestic anti-stain chemicals for prevention of fungal discoloration of the softwood lumber
