  • The release of polluting gases such as NO/sub x/ of SO/sub x/ to the atmosphere from ships is causing increasing concern. To reduce destruction to the marine environment, the value of the utilization of photovoltaic energy is highly appreciated since photovoltaic energy is and alternate clean energy source to fossil fuels. The use of a photovoltaic generating system to supplement diesel engine driven electric power system on ships has been studied. The design of the photovoltaic generating system based on a photovoltaic array is presented in this paper. The amount of NO/sub x/ and SO/sub x/ emission is found to be significantly reduced for a small vessel operated within a harbour after a photovoltaic generating system is installed to supplement the diesel engine generator system.

  • The exhaust gas emission from marine diesel engines is one of the major environmental issues. The authors focus the use of photovoltaic energy for the electric power system on marine ships. This paper proposes an operation method of a photovoltaic/diesel hybrid generating system for a small ship in consideration of the fluctuating photovoltaic power due to solar radiation. The aim of the proposed operation method is to minimize the fuel consumption and storage capacity of the battery. The validity of the proposed control method is shown by the numerical simulation based on the experimental data of the photovoltaic system.

  • This paper describes a power quality analysis of a photovoltaic generating systems. Prior to the power measurement, domestic and foreign codes related to the photovoltaic generating systems were briefly summarized. After constructing about 5 kW photovoltaic systems, input/output voltages and currents were measured to compare and analyze the power quality by the module type. Based on the measured values, a couple of factors such as active power, power factor, total harmonic distortion(THD) was calculated and analyzed.

  • The crystalline silicon solar cell was one of the first to be developed and it is still the most widely used type. The photovoltaic cells will exhibit long-term degradation if the temperature exceed a certain limit. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible of improving the performance of a photovoltaic cooling system. According to the results of the experiment, the thermal degradation of 44.63degrees was observed by cooling on the surface of photovoltaic cells. It is a decrease of 22.215percent of generating power. It is shown that photovoltaic cooling system is effected on improving the effectiveness of a photovoltaic out of power.

  • As a new technical approach, an attempt was made to realize a photovoltaic system for an eco-environmental leisure ship by simultaneously actuating nine photovoltaic solar panels in association with the application of a sail-controlling system using wind energy. In this approach, the photovoltaic system consisted of a solar module, an inverter, a battery, and the relevant components, while the sail-controlling device was equipped with sail up/down and mast turning systems. The previously mentioned eco-environmental leisure ship utilizes a photovoltaic hybrid system that uses solar and wind energy as renewable energy sources. Furthermore, this research included a performance evaluation of the manufactured prototype, the acquisition of the purposed quantity values, and development of the purposed items. The significant items, including the sail up/down speed (seconds) and mast turning angle (degrees) were evaluated for a performance test. A wind direction sensitivity of 90% and maximum instant charging power of 900 W were also obtained in the process of the performance evaluation. In addition, the maximum sail time was also evaluated in order to acquire the optimum value. The performance evaluation showed that the prototype with a photovoltaic hybrid system was suitable for sailing an eco-environmental leisure ship using solar and wind energy.

  • Since photovoltaic generating system is significantly important among renewable energy sources, photovoltaic plants are installed more than past. As a result, accidents of photovoltaic system are also increased, so the additional hardware which includes monitoring system and periodic inspection are required for safety. In addition, a photovoltaic system is installed where a person can't approach to detect a fault, so a number of devices are required to detect it. This paper proposes that drone and thermo-graphic camera are used for detecting a fault of photovoltaic plant and suggests efficiency to control a drone for detecting a photovoltaic plant.

  • This paper describes a hybrid multi-output three-level DC/DC converter suitable for a wide, high-input voltage range of an auxiliary power supply for a high-power photovoltaic generating system. In a high-power photovoltaic generating system, the solar panel output voltage depends on solar radiation quantity and varies from 450Vdc to 1100Vdc. The proposed hybrid multi-output three-level DC/DC converter, which is an auxiliary power supply, would be used as power source for control printed circuit boards and relay and cooling fans in a high-power photovoltaic generating system. The proposed multi-output ($24V_{DC}/30A$, $230V_{DC}/5A$) hybrid three-level boost converter, which uses an energy recovery snubber, is controlled by variable-frequency and phase-shifted modulations and can achieve zero-voltage switching with all operating conditions of input voltage and load range. Experimental results of a 2kW prototype are evaluated and implemented to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

  • It proposes an efficient control algorithm to increase electric power transmission efficiency between photovoltaic power generating system and the grid. The main controller finds a maximum efficiency condition by considering the quantity of power generated from PV arrays, the number of inverters, and efficiency of PV inverter. According to the condition, a relay board arranges a point of contract of PV arrays. By the disposition of PV arrays, it assigns the optimized power on each PV inverter. Operational principle of the proposed maximum efficiency point tracking algorithm is given in detail. To verify the validity of the proposed approach, computer-aided simulation and experiment carried out.

  • Recently, many renewable energy generating businesses are ongoing progress due to the introduction of the RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standards) as well as the needs of environmentally friendly energy resources. Researches on photovoltaic system are actively being processed since the photovoltaic system is relatively easy to install and becomes commercialized in many domestic application areas. Furthermore, the floating photovoltaic system is likely to be installed more actively since the conventional photovoltaic system requires relatively large areas of land. Also, the floating photovoltaic system is more efficient than photovoltaic system installed in land due to the operation in lower temperature. However, safety problems such as electric shock could arise since the cable should be installed in the water. In this paper, the leakage current and the voltage rising are measured and analyzed for the case when the cables are damaged connecting the floating photovoltaic system to the grid.
