  • This paper proposes an interpretation of Charles Ess's pros hen pluralism, especially concerning what constitutes the single end point (hen) toward which the pluralistic viewpoints converge (pros). The single end point, I argue, is constituted by an empirical social reality that obtains in the world at a particular period. In other words, it is the fact that we happen to agree largely and broadly on several ethical issues that serves as the end point in Ess's theory. The reason is that humans happen largely to share the same goals and values qua human beings, such as the desire for communication and cooperation with one another. It is not their rationality, or any other permanent and ideal characteristic, that serves as the source of normativity for human beings, but rather the contingent facts that obtain at a particular place and time, facts that humans happen to agree on. This raises an obvious objection of what to do with those who might cherish a very different set of values. The answer is that the globalized nature of the world today, especially deepened by information technology, makes it increasingly difficult for any groups to remain isolated. This does not imply, however, that disagreements are not possible. On the contrary, disagreements are a part of the whole process from the beginning. At the theoretical level, there is always a need for those who disagree on the theoretical issues rationally to persuade one another. This is also part of the empirical reality referred to earlier.

  • Doris Lessing, who considers science and technology as instruments of capitalism, deals with the theme of 'biological evolution' in The Sirian Experiments, the third book in the Canopus in Argos: Archives series. One of her themes that repeats throughout is that of 'spiritual evolution,' and in The Four-Gated City she even used 'biological evolution' as its metaphor. This paper analyzes The Sirian Experiments using scientific knowledge such as the concept of 'biological evolution' from Charles Darwin's evolution theory and Edward O. Wilson's sociobiology. Lessing concludes that while 'biological evolution' not accompanied with 'spiritual evolution' puts humans in existential problems and mental breakdown, the one in equilibrium with the other can bring social and political revolution. Lessing's concept of 'spiritual evolution' is basically a product of her holistic view and her own philosophical view that human evolution is a necessary process following the Universal Order, which shows that she is influenced by Sufism. The basic tenet in Sufi philosophy is to achieve equilibrium between the rational and non-rational modes of consciousness. Lessing incorporates her rational and irrational ideas into The Sirian Experiments to make a field for confluence where the biological, the sociological, and the spiritual thinking converge.

  • This paper addresses a new project being carried out at Satellite Technology Research Center. The purpose of the project is to implement a system which receives, processes and stores 1m resolution satellite image transmitted at over 300Mbps down link data rates. In order to develop such a system, a system operational concept design and a requirements study were being carried out As a result of the operational concept design, system objectives, system context and system functions were defined. The system shall be operated according to the philosophy of maximum automation. rapid processing, reliability, integrity, cost effectiveness, and expandability. The system is divided into twelve independent processes and its behavior is modeled by operational scenario, which are combinations of independent processes. Process information and logs generated by the system shall be stored in databases and data received and generated be automatically archived and managed in a hierarchical storage device. The system shall have redundant components in order to be ready for recovering from sudden system failures. This paper will describe in detail the system operational concept design and the system requirements derived from the operational concept design.

  • This paper is a study on the anthroposophic characteristics shown in the first Goetheanum. Rudolf Steiner promoted anthroposophy base on the critique of modem times. His philosophy has developed in various areas such as medical science, agriculture, education, and art. In particular, his thinking was well expressed in the first Goetheanum which was built for Anthroposophical Society. The anthrososophic architectural theory is defined here as application of cosmology, metamorphology and geometry. Steiner defined geometry as a unconscious awareness inscribed in skeletal system of human body as humans have evolved in the process of cosmological development. As a result, Steiner's architecture was able to create metamorphological spaces with harmonizing geometric and organic factors. In respect of decoration, the shapes of plants applied to the decoration still kept individuality because of being made manually, thus perfect symmetrical architecture was impossible. Moreover, the first Goetheanum placed an emphasis on formative dynamics. This was to wake an individual's self-conscienceless up, by enabling him to experience with all the senses without reasoning from the precedent.

  • In this paper, I review the origins, activities, and influences on the future mathematical development of the Analytical Society of Cambridge. The story of the late 18th century Scotland mathematicians and the early 19th century Cambridge mathematician such as Woodhouse, and the Analytical Society's history show that the Analytical Society wasn't a completely new and reformative meeting. This article reveals that the new analytical studies developed characteristically in Britain's specific intellectual and social context of the late 18th century and the early 19th century.

  • Human being has attempted to solve the problem of imperfect knowledge for a long time. In 1982 Pawlak proposed the rough set theory to manipulate the problem in the area of artificial intelligence. The rough set theory has two interesting properties: one is that a rough set is considered as distinct sets according to distinct knowledge bases, and the other is that distinct rough sets are considered as one same set in a certain knowledge base. This leads to a significant philosophical interpretation: a concept (or an event) may be understood as different ones from different perspectives, while different concepts (or events) may be understood as a same one in a certain perspective. This paper claims that such properties of rough set theory produce a mathematical model to support critical realism and theory ladenness of observation in the philosophy of science.

  • After Industrial Revolution, new thought system is needed to subdue multi-chanties and complexities of society. Nowadays under 'system theory', these efforts are theorized and organized in fields of science, philosophy and others. From Industrial revolution, before establishing the system theory, system has been needed by the expression methods. From that time, as it could be done, standardization, has been continued. Finally these conclusion reached at the systematic expression methods and when the system was build up, this theory was come true in Art such as De Stijl, Neo-Pasticism, Russian Suprematism and Constructism. For that reason, formal solution to achieve mass reductions was found in Art, so people connected Industry with Art at that time. Systematic expression methods in Art have characteristics of system and reflect mathematics and geometry theory which is based on the system theory. This study analyzes the systematic methods in contemporary interior space through the concept of systematic expression methods in Swiss Allianz's works which used the systematic expression methods and also inquires how the common meaning of system after recent times effect to contemporary design.

  • The numerical simulations associated with the interaction of High Velocity Clouds (HVC) with the Magnetized Galactic Interstellar Medium (ISM) are a powerful tool to describe the evolution of the interaction of these objects in our Galaxy. In this work we present a new project referred to as Theoretical Virtual i Observatories. It is oriented toward to perform numerical simulations in real time through a Web page. This is a powerful astrophysical computational tool that consists of an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) and a database produced by numerical calculations. In this Website the user can make use of the existing numerical simulations from the database or run a new simulation introducing initial conditions such as temperatures, densities, velocities, and magnetic field intensities for both the ISM and HVC. The prototype is programmed using Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP (LAMP), based on the open source philosophy. All simulations were performed with the MHD code ZEUS-3D, which solves the ideal MHD equations by finite differences on a fixed Eulerian mesh. Finally, we present typical results that can be obtained with this tool.

  • A corporate identity is an expression of a company's personality and philosophy. From Trademarks to Letterheads, most of companies are eager to show up themselves to the audience. Nowadays the Web has quid(Iy emerged as the most influential communications media for the public. In aspects of this situation, traditional corporate identity program has to change to accord with the new media. Especially print media news has broaden their line to the Web, but most of them are lacking in the express their Identity, Therefore, it is an urgent problem to find their Identity on the Web site. In this paper, I am going to analyze the new aspects of identity in the news site on the web.
