Corylopsis gotoana (Hamamelidaceae) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment various diseases including cold, edema and vomiting. However, previous studies regarding component analysis and pharmacological actions of C. gotoana are extremely limited until now. In this study, we investigated anti-inflammatory activities of the methanolic extract of the twigs of Corylopsis gotoana (MCG) both in vitro and in vivo. MCG effectively inhibited excessive NO production in IFN-${\gamma}$ and LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages without notable cytotoxicity. In addition, we also found that MCG could attenuate the expression of inflammatory mediators such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). We further tested in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of MCG using paw edema mouse model. Herein, MCG demonstrated significant suppression on the paw edema induced by both of trypsin and carrageenan. These results indicated that MCG has potent anti-inflammatory potential and may be useful for prevention and treatments of inflammatory diseases.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of pediatric liver disease. Similar to NAFLD in adults, NAFLD in children is associated with obesity and insulin resistance and requires liver histology for diagnosis and staging. However, significant histological differences exist between adult and pediatric NAFLD. The rise in childhood obesity has been accompanied by an increase in pediatric NAFLD. Age, gender and race/ethnicity are significant determinants of risk, and sex hormones, insulin sensitivity and adipocytokines are implicated in the pathogenesis of pediatric NAFLD. There is no consensus for treatment of NAFLD, however, data suggest that diet, exercise and some pharmacological therapies may be of benefit. To evaluate and effectively treat pediatric NAFLD, the pathophysiology and natural history of the disease should be clarified and non-invasive methods for screening, diagnosis, and longitudinal assessment developed.
This study was conducted to purify and characterize a polysaccharide fraction from whole parts of Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke, which was previously reported to show an antitumor activity by us. The plant was extracted with 5% ethanol for 3 days in the room temperature. The extract was dialyzed by 5% ethanol, and then concentrated by extraction with $excess\;_N-butanol$, followed by gel filtration named Fr. a and b. Each was composed of gallic acid, hexose, pentose, uronic acid and protein, indicating that both fractions were tannic polysaccharide containing protein. Heat treatment of them yielded gallic acid less polysaccharides. They showed a colony stimulating factor activity.
Myasthenia gravis is relatively rare disease which is related autoimmune response. There are various methods of management for myasthenia gravis, but nowaday radical thymectomy is the treatment of choice in the aspect of bringing out complete remission and clinical improvement. Sixteen patients of myasthenia gratis underwent radical thymectomy during last eight years, and its result was analysed. Complete rem ssion was achieved in five patients (31 %) and pharmacological or symptomatic improvement in seven patients (44%), thus giving a total remission in 12 patients (75%). Postoperative result was not correlated with age, sex, degree of preoperative symptom, surgical approach, pathologic diagnosis.
Caragana sinica (Leguminosae) is a plant, which has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of lots of diseases including neuralgia, goat, hypertension and eczema. However, scientific studies of C. sinica in pharmacological aspects are not carried out. In this study, the anti-nociceptice effect of methanolic extract of C. sinica (MCS) was evaluated using various pain models. Our data represented that MCS significantly delayed the latency time under central pain condition which are arose from thermal stimuli, indicating MCS possess analgesic potential against central nociception. In addition, MCS showed strong and dose-dependent anti-nociceptive activities on acetic acid-induced peripheral pain, compared to positive control such as indomethacin. Further combination studies using naloxone, a non-selective opioid receptor antagonist, have revealed that analgesic activity of MCS was not changed in the presence of naloxone, indicating MCS exerts anti-nociceptive activity independent of opioid receptor. These results suggest that MCS may be an effective medicine in managing pain.

Ginseng (the root of Panax ginseng C. A. MEYER, Araliaceae) has been used for traditional medicine in China, Korea, Japan and other Asian countries for the treatment of various diseases including psychiatric and neurologic diseases as well as diabetes mellitus. So far, ginseng saponins (ginsenosides) have been regarded as the principal components responsible for the pharmacological activities of ginseng. Ginsenosides are glycosides containing an aglycone (protopanaxadiol or protopanaxatriol) with a dammarane skeleton and have been shown to possess various biological activities including the enhancement of cholesterol biosynthesis, stimulation of serum protein synthesis, immuno- modulatory effects and anti-inflammatory activity. Several studies using ginsenosides have also reported anti-tumor effects, particularly the inhibition of tumor-induced angiogenesis, tumor invasion and metastasis, and the control of phenotypic expression and differentiation of tumor cells.
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) is deciduous shrubs in the genus Hippophae, mainly cultivated in Europe and Asia. Sea buckthorn berries have a high vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, carbohydrates, protein, organic acids, dietary minerals, triterpenoids, polyphenolic acids and amino acids. Extracts of sea buckthorn berries have anti- obesity, anti-oxidantive, anti-microbial, anti-ulcerogenic, anti-diabetic and nutritional effects. Sea buckthorn used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of cough, aid digestion, invigorate blood circulation and alleviate pain. Extracts of sea buckthorn branches and leaves was administered to humans and animals to treat gastrointestinal distress in Mongolia. This paper briefly reviews the most relevant experimental data on the pharmacological effects and isolated component of sea buckthorn. And, we also describe the importance of sea buckthorn as the environmental-friendly crops.
The biologically active component of licoris(Glycyrrhizae Radix L.) is considered to be glycyrrhetinic acid, an aglycone of glycyrrhizin, on the basis of chemical and pharmacological studies. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of glycyrrhetinic acid on the hepatic morphine-6-dehydrogenase activity, which catalize morphine to morphinone. Morphine-6-dehydrogenase was further purified by centrifugation, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ fractionation, sephadex G-100, hydroxyapatite column. Hepatic morphine-6-dehydrogenase activity was significantly decreased by the treatment of glycyrrhetinic acid. When effect of glycyrrhetinic acid on the hepatic morphine-6-dehydrogenase was investigated in vitro, it was powerfully inhibited the enzyme activity with dose-dependent manner. From the above results, glycyrrhetinic acid inhibits hepatic morphine-6-dehydrogenase activity and decreases the morphine induced harmful side effects.
Phenanthrene, one of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, has been known to be toxic to the environment. In this investigation, the protective effect of red ginseng on phenanthrene-induced oxidative DNA damage was evaluated using Comet assay in A549 cells. Red ginseng's cytoprotective effect on phenanthrene-induced hemolysis was also investigated. This study's findings show that oxidative DNA damage and hemolysis were significantly prevented by red ginseng treatment. Notably, it was found that pulverizing red ginseng into ultra-fine particles even enhanced its protective effects against DNA damage and hemolysis. The results suggest that particle size reduction seems to effectively enhance red ginseng's pharmacological efficacies.
Although exercise-induced growth factors such as Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) are known to affect various aspects of physiology in skeletal muscle cells, the molecular mechanism by which IGF-I modulates anti-inflammatory effects in these cells is presently unknown. Here, we showed that IGF-I stimulation suppresses the expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), a key innate immune receptor. A pharmacological inhibitor study further showed that PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is required for IGF-I-mediated negative regulation of TLR4 expression. Furthermore, IGF-I treatment reduced the expression of various NF-${\kappa}B$-target genes such as TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6. Taken together, these findings indicate that the anti-inflammatory effect of exercise may be due, at least in part, to IGF-I-induced suppression of TLR4 and subsequent downregulation of the TLR4-dependent inflammatory signaling pathway.
