Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify and compare role conflict and job satisfaction between nurses in ICU and nurses in general ward. Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 141 nurses employed at ICU and 201 nurses employed at general ward, who were recruited from 5 university hospitals with 500 beds located in Seoul and Gyeonggido. The instruments included role conflict scale developed by Kim and Park(1995) and job satisfaction scale translated and modified by Lee(1996). The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS WIN 10.0 program for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Result: In the two groups, there was a inverse correlation between role conflict and job satisfaction. In ICU, nurses' role conflict levels differed significantly depending on religion(p<.05), total experience(p<.05), scheduled to work as a nurse(p<.05). And nurses' job satisfaction levels differed significantly depending on total experience(p<.05), working period in current post(p<.001), scheduled to work as a nurse(p<.001), motive of choosing the nursing science(p<.01), and job satisfaction(p<.001). In general ward, nurses' job satisfaction levels differed significantly depending on marital status(p<.05), educational level(p<.01), total experience(p<.001), motive of choosing the nursing science(p<.01), and job satisfaction(p<.001). Conclusion: Summing up, the nurses at ICU showed higher level of role conflict than the nurses ay general ward. Therefore, it is needed to decrease the level of nurse's role conflict and improve their job satisfaction in ICU.
Purpose: This survey was conducted to investigate the level of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related peritraumatic distress and job stress among clinical nurses and evaluate their effects on nursing performance. Methods: The participants were 115 nurses from 5 hospitals in 3 regions in Korea. The peritraumatic distress index (PDI), job stress, and nursing performance scales were used for the analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multivariate regression analysis. Results: The level of peritraumatic distress of nurses was scored at 22.8 ± 9.26 (range 0 to 45). The level of job stress was scored at 2.69 ± 0.51 (range 1.3 to 3.7). The level of nursing performance was scored at 3.73 ± 0.51(range 1.76 to 5.0). Peritraumatic distress was observed to be positively correlated with job stress (r=.408, p<.001). However, peritraumatic distress and job stress were not correlated with nursing performance. In multivariate regression, the only variable seen to affect nursing performance was the work experience of the nurses. Work experience levels of five to fifteen years were observed to have a significant positive effect on nursing performance. Conclusion: The work experience of nurses directly influenced nursing performance during the pandemic period. Thus, to retain more nurses and to improve nursing performance, it would be necessary to develop various strategies to decrease their peritraumatic distress and job stress caused by the pandemic.
Purposes: Caregivers are placed in a poor working environment because there is no special legal basis or definition in the current medical system, and they have difficulty in supplying manpower due to frequent job change and retirement. Therefore, this study aimed to find out the effect on job consciousness, job stress, job satisfaction, and turnover intention of caregivers in nursing hospitals for the elderly. Methodology: In this study, a survey was conducted from May 2nd to 16th, 2022, targeting caregivers with more than 6 months of work experience working at 10 nursing hospitals in D City. Data were collected through convenience sampling, and a self-administered questionnaire method was used, in which subjects filled out a questionnaire. A total of 240 questionnaires were distributed, and 220 copies were considered for the final analysis after excluding non-response or inappropriate questionnaires for data use. Data analysis used t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis, and the main results are as follows. Findings: Job stress and job satisfaction showed a significant correlation with the level of turnover intention, and were also found to be major determinants. On the other hand, among the occupational characteristics of the study subjects, employment type, job motivation, service period, number of patients, injury experience, and license status showed a significant difference from turnover intention. Conclusion: As a result of the above research, in order to prevent job turnover and retirement by improving job stress and job satisfaction of caregivers engaged in nursing hospitals, it is necessary not only to legalize caregivers, but also to secure an appropriate level of caregivers for nursing hospitals and improve specific treatment for caregivers. Ultimately, a policy alternative that can provide quality nursing service is required.
