Design of Adaptive Controller to Compensate Dynamic Friction for a Benchmark Robot (벤치마크 로봇의 동적 마찰 보상을 위한 적응 제어기 설계)

  • Friction force on robot systems is highly nonlinear and especially disturbs precise control of the robots at low speed. This paper deals with the dynamic friction compensation problem of a well-known one-link benchmark robot system. We consider the LuGre model because the model can successfully represent dynamic characteristics and various effects of friction phenomenon. The proposed controller is constructed as two parts. An adaptive controller based on dual observers is used to estimate and compensate the dynamic friction. In order to attenuate the friction estimation error and other disturbances, PI observer is additionally designed. Through the computer simulations with the benchmark system, this paper first examines the effects of nonlinear dynamic friction on the control performance of the benchmark robot system. Next, it is shown that the control performance against the dynamic friction is improved by using the proposed controller.

  • Recently high-speed memory array based on RAM, which is a type of solid-state drive (SSD), has been introduced to handle the input/output (I/O) bottleneck. But there are only a few performance studies on RAM based SSD storage with regard to diverse workloads. In this paper, we focus on the file system for RAM based memory array based NGS (Next Generation Storage) system which is running on Linux operating system. Then we perform benchmark tests on practical file systems including Ext3, ReiserFS, XFS. The result shows XFS significantly outperforms other file systems in tests that represent the storage and data requests typically made by enterprise applications in many aspects. The experiment is used to design the dedicated file system for NGS system. The results presented here can help enterprises improve their performance significantly.

  • This paper constructs a stochastic model for computer performance evaluation which has several parameters such as the kinds of instruction mix of benchmark programs, distribution and frequency of instruction mix. It shows, by applying the model to the performance evaluation of the Intel 8086/8088 microprocessor, that this model could be utilited not only for performance evaluation of existing computer systems but also for estimation of nonexisting systems.

  • There have been an emerging interests in the importance of database tuning techniques under modem database environments in which very large-scale data should be managed. In Particular. database performance parameters should be tuned to reflect system loads appropriately. This paper presents two parameter tuning strategies, namely throughput-based and response-time-based, which tune each performance parameter accordingly. The proposed techniques are applied to two commercial database systems in the TPC-W benchmark to see the effectiveness of those methods. The results show that they can help improve system performance considerably.

  • The sodium-cooled fast reactor is among the innovative nuclear technologies selected in the framework of the development of Generation IV concepts, allowing the irradiation of uranium-plutonium mixed oxide fuels (MOX). A fundamental step for the safety assessment of MOX-fuelled pins for fast reactor applications is the evaluation, by means of fuel performance codes, of the integral thermal-mechanical behaviour under irradiation, involving the fission gas behaviour and release in the fuel-cladding gap. This work is dedicated to the performance analysis of an inner-core fuel pin representative of the ASTRID sodium-cooled concept design, selected as case study for the benchmark between the GERMINAL and TRANSURANUS fuel performance codes. The focus is on fission gas-related mechanisms and integral outcomes as predicted by means of the SCIANTIX module (allowing the physics-based treatment of inert gas behaviour and release) coupled to both fuel performance codes. The benchmark activity involves the application of both GERMINAL and TRANSURANUS in their "pre-INSPYRE" versions, i.e., adopting the state-of-the-art recommended correlations available in the codes, compared with the "post-INSPYRE" code results, obtained by implementing novel models for MOX fuel properties and phenomena (SCIANTIX included) developed in the framework of the INSPYRE H2020 Project. The SCIANTIX modelling includes the consideration of burst releases of the fission gas stored at the grain boundaries occurring during power transients of shutdown and start-up, whose effect on a fast reactor fuel concept is analysed. A clear need to further extend and validate the SCIANTIX module for application to fast reactor MOX emerges from this work; nevertheless, the GERMINAL-TRANSURANUS benchmark on the ASTRID case study highlights the achieved code capabilities for fast reactor conditions and paves the way towards the proper application of fuel performance codes to safety evaluations on Generation IV reactor concepts.

  • This paper presents the parameter study of multiple tuned liquid damper (MTLCD) applied to the 76-story benchmark building. A parameter study involves the effects of number of TLCD, frequency range, and central tuning frequency ratio, which are important parameters of MTLCD. The performance of MTLCD is carried out numerical analysis which reflects the nonlinear property of liquid motion. The parameters of TLCD exist different each optimal values according to mass ratio. The performance of single-TLCD (STLCD) is sensitive for tuning frequency ratio. Therefore, MTLCD is proposed to protect such the shortcoming of STLCD. The result of numerical analysis presents improved performance for robustness of MTLCD

Design and Performance Analysis of the H/V-bus Parallel Computer (H/V-버스 병렬컴퓨터의 설계 및 성능 분석)

  • The architecture of a MIMD-type parallel computer system is specified: a simulator is developed to support design and evaluation of systems based on the architecture: and conducted with the simulator to evaluate system performance. The horizontal/vertical-bus(H/V-bus) system architecture provides an NxN array of processing elements which communicate with each other through a network of N horizontal buses and N vertical buses. The simulator, written in SLAM II and FORTRAN, is designed to provide high-resolution in simulating the IPC mechanism. Parameters provide the user with independent control of system size, PE speed and IPC mechanism speed. Results generated by the simulator include execution times, PE utilizations, queue lengths, and other data. The simulator is used to study system performance when a partial differential equation is solved by parallel Gauss-Seidel method. For comparisons, the benchmark is also executed on a single-bus system simulator that is derived from the H/V-bus system simulator. The benchmark is also solved on a single PE to obtain data for computing speedups. An extensive analysis of results is presented.

  • Data Envelopment Analysis-Assurance Region(DEA-AR) model is used in this paper to investigate the efficiency and performance potential of Korean banks as they engage in activities that incur interest and non-interest expenses and produce income. DEA provides a measure of each bank's relation to the best-practice frontier for its competitors. This can provide a better quality-benchmark than using industry averages or a particular peer bank branches as the benchmark. The banks are classified into efficient and inefficient sets. Multiplier values for AR-inefficient banks with unique slacks indicate the potential for management to improve the bank's performance relative to its peers. DEA-AR that provide economically reasonable bounds for the multipliers lead to profitability potential, as distinct from efficiency, results.

  • In this paper, we present an international benchmark used in the adaptive control specialist community in order to evaluated the fuzzy control performances. Before solving the corresponding problems, we introduce some improvements on a classic fuzzy controller in order to consider high order systems and time delays. At the end of this paper, the simulation results obtained with the extended Fuzzy Controller will be compared with those obtained with a Supervised Adaptive Controller.

Experimental Performance Comparison of Dynamic Data Race Detection Techniques

  • Data races are one of the most difficult types of bugs in concurrent multithreaded systems. It requires significant time and cost to accurately detect bugs in complex large-scale programs. Although many race detection techniques have been proposed by various researchers, none of them are effective in all aspects. In this paper, we compare the performance of five recent dynamic race detection techniques: FastTrack, Acculock, Multilock-HB, SimpleLock+, and causally precedes (CP) detection. We experimentally demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of these dynamic race detection techniques in terms of their detection capability, running time, and runtime overhead using 20 benchmark programs with different characteristics. The comparison results show that the detection capability of CP detection does not differ from that of FastTrack, and that SimpleLock+ generates the lowest overhead among the hybrid detection techniques (Acculock, SimpleLock+, and Multilock-HB) for all benchmark programs. SimpleLock+ is 1.2 times slower than FastTrack on average, but misses one true data race reported from Mutilock-HB on the large-scale benchmark programs.
