  • Blind equalization techniques have been widely used in wireless communication systems. In this paper, we investigate the information potentials in the criterion of minimizing Euclidian distance between two PDFs criterion for adaptive blind equalizers and evaluate BER performance of the method that has utilized an appropriate balance between the two information potentials, one from output samples and ramdomly generated desired samples at the receiver and another from the interactions among output samples. The balanced information potential method has shown in the BER performance results that it can produce significantly enhanced BER performance in blind equalization applications.

  • The comparison of 3 conventional binarization methods for insect footprints and the result of performance evaluation using a proposed performance criterion are introduced in this paper. The 3 different binarization algorithms for comparison are based on different category each, and the proposed performance criterion is based on the characteristics of insect footprints which have very smaller foreground area than background area. In the experiments, average performance results using 71 test images are compared and analyzed. The higher-order entropy binarization algorithm proposed by Abutaleb showed the best result for pattern recognition applications of insect footprints.

  • By integrating an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) and an inerter, the ATMDI has been proposed to attenuate undesirable oscillations of structures under the ground acceleration. Employing the mode generalized system, the dynamic magnification factors (DMF) of the structure-ATMDI system are formulated. The criterion can then be defined as the minimization of maximum values of the DMF of the controlled structure for optimum searching. By resorting to the defined criterion and the particle swarm optimization (PSO), the effects of varying the crucial parameters on the performance of ATMDI have been scrutinized in order to probe into its superiority. Furthermore, the results of both ATMD and tuned mass dampers inerter (TMDI) are included into consideration for comparing. Results corroborate that the ATMDI outperforms both ATMD and TMDI in terms of the effectiveness and robustness. Especially, the ATMDI may greatly reduce the demand on both the mass ratio and inerter mass ratio, thus being capable of further miniaturizing both the ATMD and TMDI. Likewise the miniaturized ATMDI still keeps nearly the same stroke as the TMDI with a larger mass ratio. Hence, the ATMDI is deemed to be a high performance control device with the miniaturization and suitable for super-tall buildings.

  • Lateral loading due to wind or earthquake is a major factor that affects the design of high-rise buildings. This paper highlights the problems associated with the seismic design of high-rise buildings in regions of strong wind and moderate seismicity. Seismic response analysis and performance evaluation were conducted for wind-designed concentrically braced steel high-rise buildings in order to check the feasibility of designing them per elastic seismic design criterion (or strength and stiffness solution) in such regions. Review of wind design and pushover analysis results indicated that wind-designed high-rise buildings possess significantly increased elastic seismic capacity due to the overstrength resulting from the wind serviceability criterion. The strength demand-to-capacity study showed that, due to the wind design overstrength, high-rise buildings with a slenderness ratio of larger than four or five can elastically withstand even the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) with the seismic performance level of immediate occupancy under the limited conditions of this study. A step-by-step seismic design procedure per the elastic criterion that is directly usable for practicing design engineers is also recommended.

  • Lattice reduction (LR) has been used widely in conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to enhance the performance. However, LR is hard to be applied to the relay systems which are important but more complicated in the wireless communication theory. This paper introduces a new viewpoint for utilizing LR in multiuser MIMO relay systems. The vector precoding (VP) is designed along with zero force (ZF) criterion and minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and enhanced by LR algorithm. This implementable precoder design combines nonlinear processing at the base station (BS) and linear processing at the relay. This precoder is capable of avoiding multiuser interference (MUI) at the mobile stations (MSs) and achieving excellent performance. Moreover, it is shown that the amount of feedback information is much less than that of the singular value decomposition (SVD) design. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme using the complex version of the Lenstra--Lenstra--Lovász (LLL) algorithm significantly improves system performance.

  • In this paper, the Euclidean distance between the probability density functions (PDFs) for biased errors and a Dirac-delta function located at zero on the error axis is proposed as a new performance criterion for adaptive systems in non-Gaussian noise environments. Also, based on the proposed performance criterion, a supervised adaptive algorithm is derived and applied to adaptive equalization in the shallow-water communication channel distorted by severe multipath fading, impulsive and DC-bias noise. The simulation results compared with the performance of the existing MEDE algorithm show that the proposed algorithm yields over 5 dB of MSE enhancement and the capability of relocating the mean of the error PDF to zero on the error axis.

  • In this letter, a harmonic-mean-based dual-antenna selection scheme at relay node is proposed in two-way relaying networks (TWRNs). With well-designed distributed orthogonal concatenated Alamouti space-time block code (STBC), a dual-antenna selection problem based on the instantaneous achievable sum-rate criterion is formulated. We propose a low-complexity selection algorithm based on the harmonic-mean criterion with linearly complexity $O(N_R)$ rather than the directly exhaustive search with complexity $O(N^2_R)$. From the analysis of network outage performance, we show that the asymptotic diversity gain function of the proposed scheme achieves as $1/{\rho}{^{N_R-1}}$, which demonstrates one degree loss of diversity order compared with the full diversity. This slight performance gap is mainly caused by sacrificing some dual-antenna selection freedom to reduce the algorithm complexity. In addition, our proposed scheme can obtain an extra coding gain because of the combination of the well-designed orthogonal concatenated Alamouti STBC and the corresponding dual-antenna selection algorithm. Compared with the common-used selection algorithms in the state of the art, the proposed scheme can achieve the best performance, which is validated by numerical simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a new stopping criterion for the turbo processing (Turbo-BLAST) of MIMO-OFDM system. To reduce the high computational complexity of turbo-BLAST, it is desirable to lessen the outer-loop iteration number. In a system such as IEEE 802.16e Mobile WiMax, no CRC bits are available except the last encoding packet of a transmitted burst, so early stopping criteria without the help of CRC bits are needed. The proposed criterion counts the sign differences between received parity bits and the re-encoded parity bits from received information bits. With the tail-biting code which is accepted for IEEE 802.16e, a method that the re-encoder operates at half complexity is also proposed. Computer simulations show that the proposed stopping criterion approaches the performance of GENIE aided criterion with less average number of iterations than the other early stopping criteria.

  • The macroblock-based adaptive interpolation filter method has been considered to be able to achieve high coding efficiency in H.264/AVC. In this method, although the filter selection criterion considered in terms of rate and distortion have showed a good performance, it still leaves room for improvement. To improve high coding efficiency better than conventional method, we propose a new filter selection criterion which considers two bit rates, motion vector and prediction error, and reconstruction error. In addition, the algorithm for reducing the overhead of transmitting the selected filter information is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly improves the coding efficiency compared to ones using conventional criterion. It leads to about a 5.19% (1 reference frame) and 5.14% (5 reference frames) bit rate savings on average compared to H.264/AVC, respectively.
