  • Statement of problem. Dental ceramics exhibit excellent esthetic property, compressive strength, chemical durability biocompatibility and translucency. However, it suffers from inherent brittle fractures. Various techniques and materials for intraoral porcelain repair has been suggested. Purpose. This study is to compare the tensile bond strength of four commonly used porcelain repair systems (Vivadent, Bisco, Ulttadent, Voco) and to insure the best system for the clinical application to the fractured porcelain. Materials and methods. A total of fifty specimens were fabricated. Specimens were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water for 7 days and thermocycling was performed(1000 cycles), and subjected to a tensile force parallel to the repair resin and porcelain interface by use of an Universal Testing Machine. Result. 1. Voco showed the highest tensile bond strength. In decreasing order, the tensile bond strength of the other materials was as follows : Ultradent, Bisco, Vivadent. 2. There was a statistically significant difference between the porcelain repair systems(Voco, Ultradent > Bisco, Yivadent) (p<0.05). 3. SEM examination of prepared porcelain surfaces revealed that the surface treated with Voco showed brittle fracture. However, Ultradent, Bisco and Vivadent showed ductile fracture. 4. All specimens treated with four porcelain repair systems showed adhesive failure between porcelain and composite resin.

  • The objective of this work was finding out the most advisable testing conditions for an effective and robust characterization of the tensile strength (TS) of concrete disks. The independent variables were the loading geometry, the angle subtended by the contact area, disk diameter and thickness, maximum aggregate size, and the sample compression strength (CS). The effect of the independent variables was studied in a three groups of experiments using a factorial design with two levels and four factors. The likeliest location where failure beginning was calculated using the equations that account for the stress-strain field developed within the disk. The theoretical outcome shows that for failure beginning at the geometric center of the sample, it is necessary for the contact angle in the loading setup to be larger than or equal to a threshold value. Nevertheless, the measured indirect tensile strength must be adjusted to get a close estimate of the uniaxial TS of the material. The correction depends on the loading geometry, and we got their mathematical expression and cross-validated them with the reported in the literature. The experimental results show that a loading geometry with a curved contact area, uniform load distribution over the contact area, loads projected parallel to one another within the disk, and a contact angle bigger of $12^{\circ}$ is the most advisable and robust setup for implementation of BT on concrete disks. This work provides a description of the BT carries on concrete disks and put forward a characterization technique to study costly samples of cement based material that have been enabled to display new and improved properties with nanomaterials.

  • The monitor chamber is a real time dosimetry device for the measurement and the control of radiation beam intensity of the linac system. The monitor chamber prototype was developed for monitoring and controlling radiation beam from the linac based radiation generator. The thin flexible printed circuit boards were used for electrodes of the two independent plane-parallel ionization chambers to minimize the attenuation of radiation beam. The dosimetric characteristics, saturation and linearity of the measured charge, were experimentally evaluated with the Co-60 gamma rays. The performance of the developed monitor chamber prototype was in an acceptable range and this study shows the possibility of the further development of the chamber with additional functions.

  • This paper presents the real-time implementation of an AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) vocoder which is included in the asynchronous International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT)-2000 mobile ASIC. The implemented AMR vocoder is a multi-rate coder with 8 modes operating at bit rates from 12.2kbps down to 4.75kbps. Not only the encoder and the decoder as basic functions of the vocoder are implemented, but VAD (Voice Activity Detection), SCR (Source Controlled Rate) operation and frame structuring blocks for the system interface are also implemented in this vocoder. The DSP for AMR vocoder implementation is a 16bit fixed-point DSP which is based on the TeakLite core and consists of memory block, serial interface block, register files for the parallel interface with CPU, and interrupt control logic. Through the implementation, we reduce the maximum operating complexity to 24MIPS by efficiently managing the memory structure. The AMR vocoder is verified throughout all the test vectors provided by 3GPP, and stable operation in the real-time testing board is also proved.

  • In spot welded joint. Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) method using the Model 95 Ar laser a video system and an image processor was applied to measure the stress Unlike traditional strain gauges or Moire method, ESPI method has no special surface preparation or attachments and can be measured in-plane displacement with non-contact and real time. In this experiment, specimens are loaded in parallel with a load cell. The specimens are made of the cold rolled steel sheet with 1mm thickness, are attached strain. gauges. This study Provides an example of how ESPI has been used to measure stress and strain inspecimen. The results measured by ESPI are compared with the data which was measured by strain gauge method under tensile testing.

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of two commercial ELISA tests (Allied- and CSL-ELISA) for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis in cattle, Meta-analysis using English language papers published during 1990-2001 was performed. Diagnostic odds ratios (DOR) were analyzed using regression analysis together with summary receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The difference in diagnostic performance between the two ELISA systems was evaluated by using linear regression. Publication bias was assessed by funnel plot and linear regression. The pooled sensitivity and specificity were 44% (95% CI, 38 to 51) and 98% (95% CI, 96 to 99) for the random-effect model. The DOR between studies was heterogeneous. The area under the fitted ROC curve (AUC) was 0.72 for the unweighted and 0.77 for the weighted model. Maximum joint sensitivity and specificity for the unweighted and weighted model from their summary ROC curve were 70% and 75%, respectively. Based on the fitted model, at a specificity of 95%, sensitivity was estimated to be 52% for the unweighted and 57% for the weighted model. From the final multivariable model study characteristic, the country was the only significant variable with an explained component variance of 13.3%. There were no significant differences in discriminatory power, sensitivity, and specificity between the two ELISA tests. The overall diagnostic accuracy of two commercial ELISA tests was moderate, as judged by the AUC, maximum joint sensitivity and specificity, and estimates from the fitted model and clinical usefulness of the tests for screening program is limited because of low sensitivity and heterogeneous of DOR. It is, therefore, recommended to use ELISA tests as a parallel testing with other diagnostic tests together to increase test sensitivity in the screening program.

  • A compact imaging spectrometer (COMIS) for use in the STSAT3 microsatellite is currently under development. It is scheduled to be launched into a low Sun-synchronous Earth orbit (${\sim}700km$) by the end of 2010. COMIS was inspired by the success of CHRIS, which is a small hyperspectral imager developed for the ESA microsatellite PROBA. COMIS is designed to achieve nearly equivalent imaging capabilities of CHRIS in a smaller (65 mm diameter and 4.3 kg mass) and mechanically superior (in terms of alignment and robustness) package. Its main operational goal will be the imaging of Earth's surface and atmosphere with ground sampling distances of ${\sim}30m$ at the $18{\sim}62$ spectral bands ($4.0{\sim}1.05{\mu}m$). This imaging will be used for environmental monitoring, such as the in-land water quality monitoring of Paldang Lake, which is located next to Seoul, South Korea. The optics of COMIS consists of two parts: imaging telescope and dispersing relay optics. The imaging telescope, which operates at an f-ratio of 4.6, forms an image (of Earth's surface or atmosphere) onto an intermediate image plane. The dispersion relay optics disperses the image and relay it onto a CCD plane. All COMIS lenses and mirrors are spherical and are made from used silica exclusively. In addition, the optics is designed such that the optical axis of the dispersed image is parallel to the optical axis of the telescope. Previous efforts focused on manufacturing ease, alignment, assembly, testing, and improved robustness in space environments.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the minimally meaningful dosage of inulin leading to a prebiotic effect in Indonesian infants. Methods: In a randomized controlled double-blinded, parallel, 3-arm intervention study, 164 healthy formula-fed infants aged 3 to 5 months first obtained formula-A (without inulin) during a 4-week adaptation period. Subsequently, 142 subjects were subjected to a 4-week feeding period by administering either formula-A (no inulin), formula-B (0.2 g/100 mL inulin) or formula-C (0.4 g/100 mL inulin). The primary outcome parameter was %-bifidobacteria in faecal samples determined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses. Secondary outcome parameters were faecal %-lactobacilli, pH and stool frequency, and consistency. Growth and tolerance/adverse effects were recorded as safety parameters. Results: Typical %-bifidobacteria and %-lactobacilli at the end of the adaptation period in the study population were 14% and 2%, respectively. For faecal pH, significant differences between formula groups A vs. C and A vs. B were found at the end of the intervention period. Testing for differences in faecal %-bifidobacteria and %-lactobacilli between groups was hampered by non-normal data set distributions; no statistically significant differences were obtained. Comparisons within groups revealed that only in formula group C, all the three relevant parameters exhibited a significant effect with an increase in faecal %-bifidobacteria and %-lactobacilli and a decrease in pH. Conclusion: A consistent prebiotic effect along with a decrease in pH and increase in %-bifidobacteria and %-lactobacilli was found only in the group administered 0.4 g inulin/100 mL.
