  • Polymer/clay nanocomposites have generated considerable interests in the past decade because adding just tiny amount of clay to the polymer matrix could produce a dramatic enhancement in physical, thermal and mechanical properties. Smectite clays, such as montmorillonite (MMT), are of great industrial value because of their high aspect ratio, plate morphology, intercalative capacity, natural abundance and low cost. In this study, PE/MMT nanocomposites were directly prepared by melt intercalating PE and the modified clay. The nanostructure was verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their flame retardant properties were measured and discussed by limiting oxygen index (LOI), char yield and smoke mass concentration. And their thermal stabilities were measured by differential thermogravimetric (DTG) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The PE/MMT nanocomposites proved more effective the conventional composites in reinforcement. Two functions in the thermal stability of the PE/MMT nanocomposite, one is the barrier effect to improve the thermal stability, and another is catalysis, leading to a decrease of the thermal stability. The flammability was greatly decreased due to the formation of the clay-enriched protective char during the combustion.

  • Effect of modified atmosphere packaging conditions on quality changes of dry jujube was investigated. Dry jujubes with moisture content of 26.7% were packaged in PET/Al/PE film pouches with modified atmospheres. The tested packages include those with normal air, vacuum, CO2 flushing, N2 flushing and O2 scavenger. Packages were stored at 25$^{\circ}C$ for 6 months, during which ascorbic acid concentration, browning level, titratable acidity and surface color were measured. Generally modified atmosphere packages could improve quality retention of dry jujubes except that vacuum package resulted in large surface color change. CO2-flushed package showed the best quality retention of high ascorbic acid content and low browning during 112 days, but caused high amounts of ascorbic acid destruction and browning in longer storage. In all the modified atmosphere packages titratable acidity reached a maximum followed by decline and subsequent rise, while it increased linearly with time in normal air package. Considering ascorbic acid retention browning level and surface color changes during 112 days, the packages of CO2 flushing and N2 flushing were better than others.

  • Modified atmosphere packaging(MAP) technology was applied to ‘Tsugaru’apple (Malus domestica Borkh) in order to extend the shelf-life of apples during distribution. ‘Tsugaru’apples were packed with the PE film of 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness(40LD), the PE film modified by the addition of 5% (w/w) zeolite (40CK), and the PE film bags containing the ethylene absorbent (40LP). Quality indices of ‘Tsugaru’apples during storage at 10$^{\circ}C$ were measured in terms of weight loss, soluble solids content, pH, titratable acidity, flesh firmness, peel color and sensory properties. Oxygen, carbon dioxide and ethylene concentration in the film bags changed rapidly at the early stage of storage. Weight loss of the control increased up to 3.0% after 60 days storage while those of the packed apples remained less than 0.6%. No significant differences in soluble solids content and titratable acidity could be found in all the treatments, but significant differences in pH between the control and the packed apples. Higher firmness was kept in 40LD and 40LD than other treatments during storage. Color of the peel changed rapidly in control but slowly in 40LD and 40LP. ‘Tsugaru’apples Packed with Packaging films showed a good visual and sensory quality. Results suggest that packaging treatment with LDPE of 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness and ethylene absorbent can be used for extending the shelf-life of ‘Tsugaru’apples during distribution.

  • Surface of polyethylene film was modified by ion assisted reaction in which ion beam is irradiated on polymer in reactive gas environments. Ion (argon and oxygen) beam energy was 1 keV, doses were varied from $1{\times}10^{14}$ to $1{\times}10^{17}$ inons/ $\textrm{cm}^2$, and amount of blowing oxygen from 0 to 4 sccm(ml/min). Wettability was measured by water contact angle measurement, and the surface functionality was analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The contact angles of water to polyethylene modified by oxygen ion beam only decrease from 95 to degrees, and surface energy was not changed much. The contact angles remarkably decrease to 28 degrees and surface energy increase to 67 erg/ $\textrm{cm}^2$ when the films were modified by argon ion with various ion doses with blowing oxygen gases near the polyethylene surface. Improvement of wettability and surface energy are mainly due to the new functional group formation such as C-O or C=O, which are known as hydrophilic groups from the XPS analysis, and the assisted reaction is very effective to attach oxygen atoms to form functional groups on C-C bond chains of polyethylene.

  • This article firstly reviewed Permanent Established(PE) concept of OECD and UN model tax treaty and compared it with that of Korean Corporate Income Tax Law(CITL). The various factors regarding profit like ways of deciding the local source profit, scope and calculation method which will be imputed to PE were also reviewed. Based on above, standard PE judgement basis and calculation method of local source profit were also studied by using actual cases in foreign corporation which performs plant construction & sales in Korea. Accordingly to properly solve the conflict regarding international tax and to protect the tax authority against the foreign corporation in Korea, by standing on equality, I now propose followings for the better concept of PE in Korea. Firstly, the article that a building site or construction or installation project constitutes a PE only if it lasts more than 6 months should be modified to reflect OECD model convention's criteria of 12 months. Second, the scope of 'subordinate attorney' which is regarded as PE under CITL is now including 'holding-delivery attorney', 'order attorney', and 'assurance attorney' as well as 'contract attorney'. This is overly limit the activities of foreign corporation. It had better be loosened only to include 'contract attorney' as OECD provisions. Third, the CITL limits the cases of preparatory and/or auxiliary place which is not regarded as PE, thus limit the foreign corporations' business by expanding the concept of PE. This had better be eased. Fourth, in deciding the amount of local source profits, the CITL stipulates to split the profits by the relevant contribution of transaction parties through 'profit split method'. To solve the conflict, the ways of profit split must be better clarified through providing object and detailed standard and basis.

  • This paper proposes a new fast block-matching algorithm, named MFSS(Modified Four-Step Search) algorithm, which has better performance and is more adequate for hardware realization than the existing fast algorithms. The proposed algorithm is suitable for hardware realization since it has a unique regularity during the search procedure. It is shown from simulation results that its performance is close to that of FS(Full Search) algorithm. This paper also proposes a VLSI architecture and presents some design results of a motion estimator and compensator which adopted the MFSS algorithm. The important aspects considered in designing a motion estimator and compensator are hardware complexity of design results, and total delay needed to generate the motion compensated data after finding the motion vectors. Hardware complexity is minimized by using just nine PE(Process Element)'s, and total delay is minimized by sharing search memory of the motion estimator and compensator.

  • The Polyethylene (PE), Polystyrene (PS) and Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) surface modification was investigated by hydrogen io assisted reaction (H-IAR) in oxygen environment. The IAR is a kind of surface modification techniques using ion beam irradiation in reactive gas environment. The energy of hydrogen ion beam was fixed at 1keV, io dose was varied from 5$\times$1014 to 1$\times$1017 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and amount of oxygen blowing gas was fixed 4ml/min. Wettability was measured by water contact angles measurement, and the surface functionality was analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The contact angle of water on PE modified by argon ion beam only decrease from 95$^{\circ}$ to 52$^{\circ}$, and surface energy was not changed significantly. But, the contact angle using hydrogen ion beam with flowing 4ml/min oxygen stiffly decreased to 8$^{\circ}$ and surface energy to 65 ergs/cm. In case of PS, the contact angle and surface energy changes were similar results of PE, but the contact angle of PTEE samples decreased with ion dose up to 1$\times$1015 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$, increased at higher dose, and finally increased to the extent that no wetting was appeared at 1$\times$1017 ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$. These results must be due to the hydrogen ion beam that cleans the surface removing the impurities on polymer surfaces, then hydrogen ion beam was activated with C-H bonding to make some functional groups in order to react with the oxygen gases. Finally, unstable polymer surface can be changed from hydrophobic to hydrophilic formation such as C-O and C=O that were confirmed by the XPS analysis, conclusionally, the ion assisted reaction is very effective tools to attach reactive ion species to form functional groups on C-C bond chains of PE, PS and PTFE.

  • Background: Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common chest wall deformity. The Nuss Questionnaire modified for Adults (NQmA) is a disease-specific health-related quality of life assessment tool for patients with pectus deformities. The aim of this study is to adapt the NQmA into Turkish. Methods: Two hundred and sixty-five patients with PE were participated, with an age range of 14 to 29 years. All patients underwent a physical examination and had not undergone corrective surgery. The Turkish version of the NQmA was completed by patients and their parents. Results: The content validity index based on expert opinions was 91% for the patient questionnaire and 96% for the parent questionnaire. The Cronbach's alpha value for the NQmA was found to be 0.805 for the patient questionnaire and 0.800 for the parent questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess construct validity. Two factors explained 51.1% of the total variance in the patient questionnaire (psychosocial: 31.145%, Cronbach's alpha=0.818; physical: 19.955%, Cronbach's alpha=0.862). In the parent questionnaire, two factors explained 51.422% of the total variance (psychosocial: 26.097%, Cronbach's alpha=0.743; physical: 25.325%, Cronbach's alpha=0.827). Construct validity was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the NQmA was found to be valid and reliable for the assessment of quality of life in patients with PE.

  • Nylon 6 and nylon elastomer were prepared by anionic polymerization route. Nylon elastomers, composed of hard segment of polyamide(PA) and soft segment of polyether(PE), were synthesized by use of TDI terminated polyol with caprolactam. The morphology of the electrospun webs of nylon and nylon elastomers, observed by FE-SEM, showed that the porous electrospun web was composed of nanofibers, whose diameter were in the range of 100 to 180 nm. Their behavior of melting and crystallization and the chemical structure of nylon elastomers were investigated by DSC and ATR FT-IR. Result of tensile testing indicated that nylon has higher tensile strength and lower elongation than nylon elastomers. Atmospheric plasma(APP) with $O_2$ and $N_2$ as reactive gas modified the surface of electrospun nylon and electrospun nylon elastomers allowing them higher hydrophilicity, while APP with $CH_4$ as reactive gas modified the surface of polymers allowing higher hydrophobicity.
