The conventional segregated finite element formulation produces a small and simple matrix at each step than in an integrated formulation. And the memory and cost requirements of computations are significantly reduced because the pressure equation for the mass conservation of the Navier-Stokes equations is constructed only once if the mesh is fixed. However, segregated finite element formulation solves Poisson equation of elliptic type so that it always needs a pressure boundary condition along a boundary even when physical information on pressure is not provided. On the other hand, the conventional integrated finite element formulation in which the governing equations are simultaneously treated has an advantage over a segregated formulation in the sense that it can give a more robust convergence behavior because all variables are implicitly combined. Further it needs a very small number of iterations to achieve convergence. However, the saddle-paint-type matrix (SPTM) in the integrated formulation is assembled and preconditioned every time step, so that it needs a large memory and computing time. Therefore, we newly proposed the P2PI semi-segregation formulation. In order to utilize the fact that the pressure equation is assembled and preconditioned only once in the segregated finite element formulation, a fixed symmetric SPTM has been obtained for the continuity constraint of the present semi-segregation finite element formulation. The momentum equation in the semi-segregation finite element formulation will be separated from the continuity equation so that the saddle-point-type matrix is assembled and preconditioned only once during the whole computation as long as the mesh does not change. For a comparison of the CPU time, accuracy and condition number between the two methods, they have been applied to the well-known benchmark problem. It is shown that the newly proposed semi-segregation finite element formulation performs better than the conventional integrated finite element formulation in terms of the computation time.
The purpose of this study was to know that the 'Thinking Science' activities affects the enhancement of critical thinking skill by the logical thinking skill about pupils in the $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ grade of elementary school in Korea. The 19 activities of 'Thinking Science' as the teaching materials was implemented to 40 pupils in elementary school over 13 weeks. Results indicated that the experimental group presented statistically meaningful improvement in logical thinking skills(p<.05). Those teaching materials contributed to improve 3 logical sub-elements significantly(p<.05) as the proportional logical element, the probabilistic logical element, and combinational logical element. But, there was no significant improvement in conservational logical element, control of variable element, and correlational element(p<.05).
Among a number of antigens characterized in M leprae, an etiological agent of Leprosy, the 18 kDa antigen, is unique to M leprae. We have previously determined a sequence specific element in the 18 kDa gene of M leprae, which confers transcriptional repression. In this report, we have examined if the element could be applied to genes other than the 18 kDa gene of M leprae. To identify the roles of the regulatory sequence in heterologous promoter, we have constructed pB3 vector series, which contains BCG hsp65 promoter and the M leprae 18 kDa transcription repression responsive element in tandem using LacZ gene as a reporter gene. Cloning of hsp65 promoters of M bovis BCG or M smegmatis in front of LacZ gene resulted in normal $\beta$galactosidase activity as expected. However, when the sequence element was placed between the promoter and the LacZ gene, $\beta$-galactosidase activity was reduced 10-fold less. Also we have examined with pB3(-) vector, that harbors the transcription repression responsive element in a reversed orientation, the $\beta$-galactosidase activity was found to be similar to pB3(+) vector. Thus, these results further confirm that M leprae 18 kDa transcription repression responsive element could regulate BCG hsp65 heterologous promoter and that the element could act as an operator for the transcription of mycobacteria.
Transcription of hepatitis B viral pregenomic promoter is known to be regulated mainly by the combined interaction of enhancers I, II and the intervening regulatory sequences between the two enhancers. A positive regulatory element was identified by serial deletion and measuring the linked chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) activities, which overlapped with the 5' region of the X open reading frame. When the positive regulatory element was inserted upstream of the SV40 early promoter, it elevated SV40 promoter activity in HepG2 cells. Two cellular proteins of 110 (p110) and 33 (p33) kDa interacted with the positive element and both of them were present in the nucleus, but p110 also existed in the cytoplasm in phosphorylated form. Dephosphorylation of p110 by acid phosphatase enhanced the DNA-binding activity of p110. The p33 could bind to single-strand DNA specifically as well as to double-strand DNA.

A general stiffener element which includes transverse shear deformation(TSD) is formulated using the p-version of finite element method. Hierarchic C"-shape functions, derived from Integrals of Legendre polynomials, are used to define the assembled stiffness matrix of the stiffener and plate on the basis of 5 D.0.F displacement fields. The stiffness matrix for the stiffener with respect to the local reference frame is transformed to the plate reference system by applying the appropriate transformation matrices in order to insure compatibility of displacements at the junction of the stiffener and plate. The transformation matrices which account for the orientation and the eccentricity effects of the stiffener with respect to the plate reference axes are used to find local behavior at the junction of the stiffener and the relative contributions of the plate and stiffener to the strength of the composite system. The results obtained by the p-version of the finite element method are compared with the results in literatures, especially those by the h-version software, MICROFEAP-II.P-II.

The Zienkiewicz-Zhu(Z/Z) error estimate is slightly modified for the hierarchical p-refinement, and is then applied to L-shaped plates subjected to bending to demonstrate its effectiveness. An adaptive procedure in finite element analysis is presented by p-refinement of meshes in conjunction with a posteriori error estimator that is based on the superconvergent patch recovery(SPR) technique. The modified Z/Z error estimate p-refinement is different from the conventional approach because the high order shape functions based on integrals of Legendre polynomials are used to interpolate displacements within an element, on the other hand, the same order of basis function based on Pascal's triangle tree is also used to interpolate recovered stresses. The least-square method is used to fit a polynomial to the stresses computed at the sampling points. The strategy of finding a nearly optimal distribution of polynomial degrees on a fixed finite element mesh is discussed such that a particular element has to be refined automatically to obtain an acceptable level of accuracy by increasing p-levels non-uniformly or selectively. It is noted that the error decreases rapidly with an increase in the number of degrees of freedom and the sequences of p-distributions obtained by the proposed error indicator closely follow the optimal trajectory.

Adaptive finite element analysis, in which its solution error meets with the user defined allowable error, is recently used to improve the reliability of finite element analysis results. This adaptive analysis is composed of two procedures; one is the error estimation of an analysis result and the other is the reconstruction of finite elements. In the (p-method, an element size is controlled by relocating of nodal positions (r-method) and the order of an element shape function is determined by the hierarchical polynomial (p-method) corresponding to the clement solution error by the enhanced SPR. In order to show the effectiveness and the accuracy of the suggested rp-method, various numerical examples were analyzed and these analysis results were examined by comparing with those obtained by the existed methods.
We consider finite element methods applied to a class of Sobolev equations in $R^d$($d{\geq}1$). Global strong superconvergence, which only requires that partitions are quais-uniform, is investigated for the error between the approximate solution and the Ritz-Sobolev projection of the exact solution. Two order superconvervgence results are demonstrated in $W^{1,p}({\Omega})$ and $L_p({\Omega})$ for $2{\leq}p$<${\infty}$.
This paper deals with a hybrid finite element method for wave scattering problems in infinite domains. Scattering of waves involving complex geometries, in conjunction with infinite domains is modeled by introducing a mathematical boundary within which a finite element representation is employed. On the mathematical boundary, the finite element representation is matched with a known analytical solution in the infinite domain in terms of fields and their derivatives. The derivative continuity is implemented by using a slope constraint. Drilling degrees of freedom at each node of the finite element model are introduced to make the numerical model more sensitive to the transverse component of the elastodynamic field. To verify the effects of drilling degrees freedom and slope constraints individually, reflection of normally incident P and SV waves on a traction free half spaces is considered. For the P-wave incidence, the results indicate that the use of slope constraint is more effective because it suppresses artificial reflection at the mathematical boundary. For the SV-wave case, the use of drilling degrees freedom is more effective by reducing numerical error at irregular frequencies.
