  • This study was conducted to monitor and prevent outbreak of insect pestsin dredged soil dumping area after completion of dredging construction in Masan City. Monitoring was carried out using tent trap, colored sticky trap, and CDC light trap. A total of 217,073 individuals belonging to 23 species from 10 families in 3 orders were collected. In overwintering survey using tent trap, 3 species were collected. 2 species (Leptocera fuscipennis (Haliday) and Ephydra japonica Miyagi) of them were outbreak species. In color sticky trap, more than 96% of total individuals were comprised of five species: Urolepis maritima Walker (43%), E. japonica (19%), Fucellia sp. 1 (13%), Philotelma sp. 1 (10%), and Homalometopus sp. 1 (9%). In CDC light trap, three dominant species were Homalometopus sp. 1 (91%), Glyptotendipes tokunagai Sasa (6%), and L. fuscipennis (1%), representing about 98% of the total. To prevent damage caused by outbreak of insect pests, we carried out ecological control methods such as covering the fresh soil in outbreak area, using light trap, pumping up water and so on, minimizing use of thermal fogging and insect growth regulatorwhen the insect pest population was rapidly increasing.

  • The fauna of spider species inhabited near paddy fields have been investigated in Chinju and Namhae areas. The spiders collected near the paddy fields in Chinju and Namhae areas were 34 species of 31 genera belonging to 10 families: 34 species on paddy levees; 16 species on barley fields; 17 species on fallow fields; and 18 species on paddy fields. The species diversity was the highest on paddy levee. The dominant species collected from each habitat near the paddy fields were Pardosa astrigera on the paddy levees and barley fields, Pirata subpiraticus on the fallow field, and Pachygnatha clercki on the paddy fields. The spiders inhabited near rice fields can be classified into nine groups based on the ecological and taxonomical characteristics: 1. Pirata spp. 2. Pachygnatha clercki 3. Teridiidae, Erigonidae, Linypidae 4. Tetragnatha spp. 5. Dolomedes surfureus 6. Pardosa spp. 7. Salticidae 8. Thomisidae 9. Clubionidae Among the nine spider groups, the spiders belong to the group 1-5 prefered wet ground or paddy to dry ground, in contrast to the group 6-9 which prefered to live on dry land. The difference of the habitat preference indicated that the former five groups do the important roll as pest predators in paddy, while the latter four group mainly suppress the overwintering pest populations on paddy levees.

  • Leptalina unicolor is a hesperiid butterfly with a restricted distribution in Korea, Japan, China, and Russia. Recently, the number of individuals is rapidly decreased in their natural habitat. This skipper has been classified as an endangered species in the 'Red Data Book', and according to an IUCN report, is under threat of extinction. Therefore, the conservation and restoration of this species both locally and globally are urgently needed. A population of L. unicolor was found in an unknown habitat in Jaeyaksan, Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2011, and these individuals were used in the present study. Here, the life cycle, characteristics of each instar larva and breeding information were determined by breeding L. unicolor in the laboratory from 2012 to 2015. The results indicated that L. unicolor occurs twice a year and over-winter as a fifth instar larva. A spring-form female individual laid $17.25{\pm}5.52eggs$, and summer form laid $29.00{\pm}5.86eggs$; it takes $53.79{\pm}0.73days$ for L. unicolor to develop from eggs to adults. After spawning, the eggs developed in $6.16{\pm}0.18days$, and larvae developed in $33.71{\pm}0.58days$; the pre-pupal stage to emergence required $14.22{\pm}0.31days$. Based on these results, we presented effective breeding information for the restoration and proliferation of the species. Several candidate plants species have been reported in the literature as a food source for L. unicolor, but we found that the preferred diet this butterfly was Miscanthus sinensis. The larvae could move easily when their preferred diet was planted in ${\geq}80%$ the cage floor area Year-round breeding was achieved by placing overwintering individuals in low temperatures in autumn. To our knowledge, this is the first study to the biology of L. unicolor in Korea, and the results of this study could be used as preliminary information for the conservation and restoration of this species in its natural habitat.

  • We estimated the averaged maximum incidences of bacterial canker at suitable sites for kiwifruit cultivation in 2020s and 2050s using D-PSA-K model with RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 climate change scenarios. Though there was a little difference between the estimation using RCP4.5 and that using RCP8.5, the estimated maximum disease incidences were more than 75% at all the suitable sites in Korea except for some southern coastal areas and Jeju island under the assumption that there are a plenty of infections to cause the symptoms. We also analyzed the intermediate and final outputs of D-PSA-K model to find out the trends on the change in disease incidence affected by climate change. Whereas increase of damage to kiwifruit canes in a non-frozen environment caused by bacterial canker was estimated at almost all the suitable sites in both the climate change scenarios, rate of necrosis increase caused by the bacterial canker pathogen in a frozen environment during the last overwintering season was predicted to be reduced at almost all the suitable sites in both the climate change scenarios. Directions of change in estimated maximum incidence varied with sites and scenarios. Whereas the maximum disease incidence at 3.14% of suitable sites for kiwifruit cultivation in 2020s under RCP4.5 scenario was estimated to increase by 10% or more in 2050s, the maximum disease incidence at 25.41% of the suitable sites under RCP8.5 scenario was estimated so.

  • Although chemical fertilizers have a quick effect and broad applicability to agricultural fields, they have caused many problems like increasing soil acidity or decreasing soil organic matters. Environmental-friendly agriculture has been attempted in various ways such as organic agriculture, natural farming, low input and sustainable agriculture. The common interest of all environmental-friendly systems is to decrease burden to agricultural environment by low input of agricultural labor and materials. This study was conducted to estimate overwintering capacity and genetic distance among Chinese Milk Vetch (Astragalus sinicus, CMV) collections based on morphological characteristics and AFLP (Amplified fragment length polymorphism) analysis. Furthermore, the effect of CMV as green manure was observed in mix-cultured paddy fields with rice, sesame and sweet-potato. An another objective of this study was also to compare the pattern of weed occurrence in paddy fields with or without CMV and different rice transplanting times. The CMV collected from Paju district in central region of Korea was successively occurring through self-reseeding without artificial management. However, there was no noticeable difference in growth habit between Paju native CMV and introduced CMV from China which is currently used in farm fields. On the basis of multi-dimensional scaling and tree analyses, there are no significant difference of agricultural growth characteristics among Paju and chinese collections only excepting leaf angle and root length. The flowering time of Gurye collection was fast for 1 week as compared to other collections. AFLP that was commonly used for plant classfication, was applied to exam the genetic variation of CMV collections. Total 579 PCR products and 336 polymorphic fragments were generated using 8 primer pairs.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the evolution of carbon and nitrogen concentrations in relation to dry matter and crude protein accumulation in the leaves of forage rape(Brassica napus Subsp. oleifera, CV. Swiss) during the growth period. Field-grown plants were sampled at intervals throughout fall, winter, early and late spring. During over-wintering period(from Nov. 7 1991 to Feb. 4 1992), the carbon concentration in the leaves increased from 382 mg to 435 mg g DM$^{-1}$ , while the concentrations of nitrogen and crude protein significantly decreased. There was little accumulation of fresh and dry matter in the leaves. On early spring growth from 4 Feb. to 30 Mar. marked carbon loss 37 mg. day$^{-1}$ and slight nitrogen accumulation occurred with the increase of fresh weight in the leaves. From spring growth to bolting stage(from 31 Mar. to 16 Apr.) the greatest accumulation of fresh and dry matter was observed and carbon and crude protein concentrations increased with a linear manner. After bolting stage the concentrations of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and crude protein in the leaves significantly decreased until late blooming stage, and the decreasing rate was prominent in nitrogen (45.7%) and crude protein(46%). From the results above it is recommended that fertilizer will be applied before early spring growth, and that optimal utilization period is a bolting stage. For the serious modification of the internal C/N balance during the overwintering period.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the effects of heat conservation materials (burying in soil, lagging, lagging +straw, nonwoven fabric, nonwoven fabric+straw) on freezing damage, labor saving, and crown gall occurrence of 'Kyoho' grapes. Temperature differences in burying in soil and lagging with $2.8^{\circ}C$ and $6.4^{\circ}C$, respectively and were considered favorable for over-wintering of grapevines. Heat conservation index in lagging +straw and burying in soil calculated from degree-hours below $-10^{\circ}C$ was 5 to 7 times higher than that of open field. Budbreak started earlier in lagging with+straw and nonwoven fabric+straw covering, and percent budbreak was increased by 22% and 7%, respectively, as well as higher than burying in soil. Diameter of bearing mother branch and length of internode and daughter branch were gross or long with soil and lagging straw and nonwoven fabric+straw. Cane growth was enhanced by burying in soil and lagging with+straw treatment. Crown gall occured higher in soil covered grape vines Labor saving was obtained in lagging with as much as 44% compared to burying in soil.

  • Shallot is a foreign crop introduced from France in 1995 as a new overwintering field crop with an aim to develop as an export crop. During the introductory cultivation trials, several problems were raised such as premature growth depression in early summer, sensitivity to summer moisture, and weakened vigor of the seed bulbs following successive propagations. This study was conducted to develop proper cultural methods based on annual productivity and adaptability of growing area to address and suggest solutions to some of these problems. Bulb weight was 18.7 g and bulb yield per 10a was 4,113 kg in 1995. In 1996, bulb weight increased to 25.8 g, while bulbs yield per 10a deceased to 2,013 kg. This trend continued in 1997 so that bulb weight increased, and yield per 10a decreased as compared to those in 1996. However, in 1998, both bulb weight (21.1 kg) and yield per 10a (1,246 kg) decreased significantly as compared to those of the previous years. Plant growth from planting to April in the coastal area was better than in other areas. However, the plant growth thereafter until early July was better in the semi-highland area. As a result, the bulb yield in the semi-highland area was 57% more than that in the lowland areas such as the coastal area.
