IB (immersed boundary) method is one of the prominent tool in computational fluid dynamics for the analysis of flows over complex geometries. The IB technique simplyfies the solution procedure by eliminating the requirement of complex body fitted grids and it is also superior in terms of memory requirement. In this study we have developed numerical code (FOTRAN) for the analysis of 2D flow over a cylinder using IB technique. The code is validated by comparing the wake lengths and separation angles given by Guo et. al. We employed fractional-step procedure for solving the Navier-Stokes equations governing the flow and discrete forcing IB technique for imposing boundary conditions. Also we have developed a 3D code for the backward-facing-step flow and flow over a sphere. The reattachment length in backward-facing-step flow was compared with the one given by Nie and Armaly, which has proven the validity of our code.
In this paper, we present two successful results from active controls of flows over a circular cylinder and a sphere for drag reduction. The Reynolds number range considered for the flow over a circular cylinder is 40-3900 based on the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter, whereas for the flow over a sphere it is $10^{5}$ based on the free-stream velocity and sphere diameter. The successful active control methods are a distributed (spatially periodic) forcing and a high-frequency (time periodic) forcing. With these control methods, the mean drag and lift fluctuations decrease and vortical structures are significantly modified. For example, the time-periodic forcing at a high frequency (larger than 20 times the vortex shedding frequency) produces $50{\%}$ drag reduction for the flow over a sphere at $Re=10^{5}$. The distributed forcing applied to the flow over a circular cylinder results in a significant drag reduction at all the Reynolds numbers investigated.

A comprehensive knowledge of the wind flow in hilly terrains is of great interest in many engineering applications, be it wind energy distribution for suitable site selection for wind farms, pollution dispersion, forest fire propagation or agrometerological studies. Several researchers have shown that wind flow over a hilly terrain may be significantly different when compared with the wind flow over a flat terrain. Complex hilly terrains may alter the wind speed to a great extent. Therefore, this effect of terrain must be properly assessed by designers and planners to arrive at a proper wind flow distribution. This paper reviews the work done in this area over the past three decades. Wind flow over two-dimensional hills and two-dimensional escarpments investigated in wind tunnels by various researchers is presented in this paper.
The goal of the research is to evaluate the open source code of OpenFOAM for the use of nuclear plant flow simulation objectively. Of the various incompressible flow solvers, simpleFoam, pimpelFoam are then tested under three validated cases (backward facing step, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow). For the evaluation of steady state incompressible laminar flow simulation, low reynolds number of backward facing step flow was solved by simpleFoam. The resultant of the reattached lengths turned out to be similar with the other experimental and simulation results. For transient flow simulation, flow over circular cylinder and turbulent round jet flow were solved by pimpleFoam. The simulation accuracy was evaluated by comparing the resultant flow patterns with the description of the characteristics of the flow over the circular cylinder. The quantitative accuracy was evaluated for no more than 85% by comparing it to the decaying constants of the turbulent round jet velocity.
Laminar flows over a cube and a cuboid (cube extended in the streamwise direction) are numerically investigated for the Reynolds numbers between 50 and 350. First, vortical structures behind a cube and lift characteristics are scrutinized in order to understand the variation in vortex shedding characteristics with respect to the Reynolds number. As the Reynolds number increases, the flow over a cube experiences the steady planar-symmetric, unsteady planar-symmetric, and unsteady asymmetric flows. Similar to the sphere wake, the planar-symmetric flow over a cube can be divided into two different regimes: single-frequency regime and multiple-frequency regime. The former has a single frequency due to regular shedding of vortices with the same strength in time, while the latter has multiple frequency components due to temporal variation in the strength of shed vortices. Second, the effect of the length-to-height ratio of the cuboid on the flow characteristics is investigated for the Reynolds number of 270, at which planar-symmetric vortex shedding takes place behind a cube. With the ratio smaller than one, the flow over the cuboid becomes unsteady asymmetric flow, whereas it becomes steady flow for the ratios greater than one. With increasing the ratio, the drag coefficient first decreases and then increases. This feature is related to the flow reattachment on the side faces of the cuboid.
Flow computations have been conducted to study the impingement flowfield over the KSR-III flume deflector To validate Euler solver for the jet impingement flowfieid, the jet flow over a double wedge deflector have been calculated and showed reasonable agreement with experimental data. The transient flow behavior of flume over deflector have been investigated and the flume from the rocket nozzle proved to be getting out of the deflector safely and the thermal effect on the base region of rocket was not considerable.

A theoretical and numerical investigation on the boundary-layer flow over a two- or three-dimensional hill is presented. The numerical model is based on the finite volume method with boundary-fitted coordinates. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with modified wall function and the low-Reynolds-number model are employed. The hypothesis of Reynolds number independency for the atmospheric boundary-layer flow over aerodynamically rough terrain is confirmed by the numerical simulation. Comparisons of the mean velocity profiles and surface pressure distributions between the numerical predictions and the wind-tunnel experiments on the flow over a hill show good agreement. The linear theory provides generally good prediction of speed-up characteristics for the gentle-sloped hills. The flow separation occurs in the hill slope of 0.5 and the measured reattachment points are compared with the numerical prediction. It is found that the k- $\varepsilon$ turbulence model is reasonably accurate in predicting the attached flow, while the low- Reynolds-number model is more suitable to simulate the separated flows.ows.
Immersed boundary lattice Boltzmann method (IBLBM) has been applied to simulate a turbulent flow over circular cylinder in a flow field effectively. Although IBLBM is very effective method to simulate the flow over a complex shape of obstacle in the flow field regardless of the constructed grids in the calculation domain, the results, however, become numerically unstable in high reynolds number flow. The most effective suggestion to archive the numerical stability in high Reynolds number flow is applying the multiple relaxation time (MRT) model instead of single relaxation time(SRT) model in the collision term of lattice Boltzmann equation. In the research MRT model for IBLBM was introduced and comparing the numerical results obtained by applying SRT and MRT. The hydraulic characteristic of cylinder in a flow field between two parallel plate at the range of $Re{\leqq}2000$represented and it is also compared the drag and lifting coefficients of the cylinder calculated by IBLBM with SRT and MRT model.
In today's uncertain economic environment, economic risk is inherent in making large investments on manufacturing facilities. It is, therefore, practically meaningful to divide investment over multiple periods, reducing the risk of investment. Then, the cash-flow over the entire planning horizon would comprise positive inflow and negative outflow. In this case, in general, evaluation by internal rate of return (IRR) is not feasible, because multiple IRRs are involved. This paper deals with a problem of evaluating profitability, as well as risk, of investment alternatives made in multiple times of investment over the entire horizon. Typically, an additional investment is required after the initial one, for expanding manufacturing capacity or other reasons. The paper pays attention to a unit cash-flow over two periods, decomposing the total cash-flow into a series of unit cash-flow patterns. It is easy to evaluate profitability of a unit cash-flow by using IRR. The total cash-flow can be decomposed into the series of two types of unit cash-flows: an investment type one (negative-positive) and the borrowing type one (positive-negative). This paper, therefore, proposes a method in which only the borrowing type unit cash-flow is eliminated in the series by converting total cash-flow using capital interest rate. Then, a unique IRR can be obtained and the profitability is evaluated. Thus, the paper extends the method of IRR so that it may help decision making in complicated cash-flow pattern observed in practice.
Direct numerical simulation of a fully developed turbulent plane Couette-Poiseuille flow with a two-dimensional (2-D) rod-roughened wall is performed to investigate the impacts of the surface roughness. It is shown that the logarithmic region in the mean velocity profile over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is significantly shortened by the surface roughness compared to that over a turbulent Couette-Poiseuille flow with smooth wall. The Reynolds shear stress over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow is decreased compared to that for a smooth case in the outer layer. These results are attributed to weakened turbulence activity or roll-cell mode over the rough wall Couette-Poiseuille flow near the channel centerline due to suppressed development of u'-structure on the top wall, as documented through spanwise energy spectra of the streamwise velocity fluctuations. Inspection of congregation motion near the bottom wall and time evolution of u'-structure reveal weakened co-supporting cycle for the rough wall case.
