Peak-to-Average Power Ratio Reduction of OFDM Signals Using Evolutionary Techniques

  • In this paper, the application of genetic algorithms (GAs) for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction is investigated. A GA is applied in order to enhance the performance of some known techniques for OFDM PAPR reduction and the potential benefits are analyzed. Using the proposed techniques, the system designer can take advantage of the GA versatility, robustness, and adaptability to specific system requirements, in order to achieve a convenient trade-off between effectiveness and computational burden.

  • This study deals with the adaptive multiuser OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system which adjusts the resource allocation according to the environmental changes in such as wireless and quality of service required by users. The resource allocation includes subcarrier assignment to users, modulation method and power used for subcarriers. We first develop a general optimization model which maximizes data throughput while satisfying data rates required by users and total power constraints. Based on the property that this problem has the 0 duality gap, we apply the subgradient dual optimization method which obtains the solution of the dual problem by iteration of simple calculations. Extensive experiments with realistic data have shown that the subgradient dual method is applicable to the real world system, and can be used as a dynamic resource allocation mechanism.

  • OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) 방식은 주파수 선택적 페이딩 (frequency selective fading)과 협대역 간섭 (narrwband interference)에 강한 전송 방식으로 대용량 데이터 통신에 적합하다. 하지만, OFDM 신호는 독립적으로 변조된 많은 부반송들로 구성되므로 이들이 동위상으로 더해질 때 신호의 진폭이 증가하여 PAPR(Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) 문제가 발생한다. 본 논문에서는 OFDM 시스템의 PAPR 문제를 해결하기 위해 반복구조의 clipping과 filtering 기법을 적용하고, 이로 인해 발생되는 대역 내 왜곡을 EVM (Error Vector Magnitude)을 이용하여 보정하는 기법을 제안하였다. 이 기법은 PAPR 감소는 물론 clipping에 의한 대역 내 왜곡을 감소시킬 수 있다. 제안하는 알고리즘을 무선 통신 시스템에 적용하였을 때 PAPR 감소 효율과 EVM, BER (Bit Error Rate) 성능을 시뮬레이션을 통해 분석했다.

주파수 다이버시티를 이용한 IS-OFDM 시스템의 간섭 성능 분석 (Anti-Interference Analysis of IS-OFDM using the Frequency Diversity)

  • 본 논문에서는 IS-OFDM(Interference Suppressing Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) 시스템과 일반 OFDM 시스템을 비교 분석하였다. 입력된 IS-OFDM의 각 병렬 브랜치 시퀀스로 곱해진 뒤 모든 부반송파에 분배되고, 각 부반송파는 주어진 프레임에서 각 병렬 브랜치의 심볼 조각들의 합으로 이뤄진 정보를 전달한다. 한 부반송파 내에 포함된 모든 심볼들은 직교 시퀀스로 구별된다. IS-OFDM은 주파수 다이버시티 특성을 가지며 간섭에 강하다. 시스템의 성능분석은 협대역 간섭과 하모닉 잡음 환경에서 각각 BER 성능을 분석하였다. 협대역 간섭에 대한 성능분석 결과, 일정한 대역폭의 협대역 간섭인 경우는 JSR(jamming to signal power ratio)이 -10∼+10 dB로 증가할 때, 낮은 JSR에서는 IS-OFDM이 우수하며, JSR이 증가되면 그 성능차가 작아진다. 그리고 일정 JSR에서 협대역 간섭의 대역폭이 증가할 때도 역시 유사한 성능특성을 보인다. 하모닉 잡음에 대한 성능분석 결과 또한 JSR이 0 dB인 하모닉 잡음의 조밀도 h-rate이 0.01∼0.8로 증가할 때 위의 결과들과 유사한 성능특성을 나타낸다. 그러므로 IS-OFDM의 성능이 일반 OFDM보다 간섭에 강건함을 알 수 있다.

  • Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as a standard for various high data rate wireless communication systems due to the spectral bandwidth efficiency, robustness to frequency selective fading channels, etc. However, implementation of the OFDM system entails several difficulties. One of the major drawbacks is the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which results in intercarrier interference, high out-of-band radiation, and bit error rate performance degradation, mainly due to the nonlinearity of the high power amplifier. This paper reviews the conventional PAPR reduction schemes and their modifications for achieving the low computational complexity required for practical implementation in wireless communication systems.

  • 본 논문에서는 주파수공간블록부호 (Space Frequency Block Code)를 적용한 다중송수신(Multiple Input Multiple Output)-OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) 시스템을 위한 반복복호 기법을 제시한다. 제시된 반복복호 기법은 zero-forcing 알고리즘과 LDPD 부호화 알고리즘을 터보 기법을 바탕으로 상호보완을 할 수 있도록 설계되었다. 시뮬레이션 결과에 의하면 고차원 변조방식을 적용한 MIMO-OFDM 페이딩 채널에서 기존의 시스템과 비교하여 향상된 성능을 확인하였다.

  • 이 논문에서는 다중 사용자 환경에서 성능을 향상시키는 MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Out)-OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) 시스템의 수신기 구조와 이 구조에 적합한 적응 빔 형성기법을 제안하고 성능을 분석한다. MIMO-OFDM수신기에 Pre-FFT적응 빔 형성기법을 제안 함으로서 원하는 사용자에게 송신 안테나 수만큼 빔 패턴이 형성되어 CCI에 의한 간섭이 제거되고 다이바시티 이득을 얻을 수 있어 MIMO-OFDM의 성능이 크게 향상된다. MIMO-OFDM 시스템에 제안된 적응 빔 형성기를 적용할 경우 성능 개선 효과를 모의 실험을 통하여 확인한다.

  • The filtered orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (F-OFDM) system has been recommended as a waveform candidate for fifth-generation (5G) communications. The suppression of out-of-band emission (OOBE) and asynchronous transmission are the distinctive features of the filtering-based waveform frameworks. Meanwhile, the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is still a challenge for the new waveform candidates. Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is an effective technique for mitigating the trend of high PAPR in multicarrier systems. In this study, the PTS technique is employed to reduce the high PAPR value of an F-OFDM system. Then, this system is compared with the OFDM system. In addition, the other related parameters such as frequency localization, bit error rate (BER), and computational complexity are evaluated and analyzed for both systems with and without PTS. The simulation results indicate that the F-OFDM based on PTS achieves higher levels of PAPR, BER, and OOBE performances compared with OFDM. Moreover, the BER performance of F-OFDM is uninfluenced by the use of the PTS technique.

Datacenter-Oriented Elastic Optical Networks: Architecture, Operation, and Solutions

  • With the exponentially increasing Internet traffic and emergence of more versatile and heterogeneous applications, the design of datacenter networks (DCNs) is subject to unprecedented requirements for larger capacity and more flexible switching granularities. Envisioning Optical-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (O-OFDM) as a promising candidate for such a scenario, we motivate the use of O-OFDM as the underlying switching technology in order to provide sufficient switching capacity and elastic bandwidth allocation. For this purpose, this article reviews the recent progresses of DCN deployment and assesses the scenario where the O-OFDM transmission and switching technology is employed in the underlying transport plane. We discuss the key issues of the datacenter-oriented O-OFDM optical networks, and in particular, elaborate on a number of open issues and solutions including system interconnection architecture, routing and resource assignment, survivability, and energy-efficiency.

  • In this paper, we first analyze the influence of interference due to the time variation and delay spread of the mobile channel on an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. With the result, we obtain the bit error rate performance of the 16-QAM OFDM system. Second, we investigate the performance of the Reed-Solomon (RS) coded 16-QAM OFDM system when the number of subcarriers varies. In the investigation, we assume that the information transmission rate and the total bandwidth expansion due to coding, guard interval, and the number of subcarriers are fixed. Under this condition, it is observed that there are optimum numbers of subcarriers that minimize the post decoding symbol error probability of RS code for various channel states.
